Tried to look in archive but it's switched off.

What age-ish do toddlers learn to count?

Ds has started to do this recently, count to 10. Which we thought was amazing only because we don't count with him really beyong three so we're not sure where he's learnt it from.

about 18 months,ds was counting up to 16.Don't ask ne why 16

Ds could recite the numbers up to ten by the time he was 18 months. Dd will be 5 in June and can only reliably count up to 5!

She gets distracted by far more interesting numbers...her counting tends to be like this 1,2,3,4,5,1,3,18,19,51,52,53,1966 Grin

DS1 very early and counting beyond 10 with one-to-one correspondence at 2.5. Doesn't seem to have made him particularly good at maths though, now at 7. DS1 read numbers very early too.

I remember DS2 counting up to 20 steps at 22 months on the water-slide on holiday, but then he seemed to forget. DS2 was later to read numbers.

ds also does add and take aways, and hes very good at shapes too and jigsaws

DS is 2.3 and can recite up to 10. Not sure he has that much concept of number, although he has some concept of it.

Can't remember when he started counting up to 10 though.

tassis · 05/03/2006 16:28

he could recite them by rote around 18 months, but only around 2.5 could he point to things and properly count them IYSWIM

my dd1 could before she could walk! She was a late walker though, it was around 18 months.

dd rote counted to 13 at 2 (amount of stairs we have) but as she was pretty much non verbal (well very toddler martian speak) it was only me and her dad that knew she could.
Now at 3.4 she can count to a hundred pretty easily and is just starting to count everything
like radiator dents and stairs and bars iin the supermarket trolley. She has been delayed in everything in her life except for toilet training and counting so I'm really proud of her :)
It all seems familiar to me as ds (12) was always very numerate and is very much a maths swot now.
Perhaps she's the same way
Heavens knows it skips a generation :)

DD could count to 10 by 18 months, now she counts evrything.

How your daughter now ? My DD is 19 months and have been told that counting to 10 ( mine does by repetition) is a sign of the spectrum

wishIwasonholiday10 · 02/09/2024 07:19

Mine has started recently at around 2 year 2 months.

She also surprised us recently by being able to fill in gaps in the alphabet if we start reciting it. Don’t think we’ve taught her that yet so must have picked it up from nursery or Miss Rachel.
