Tried to look in archive but it's switched off.

What age-ish do toddlers learn to count?

Ds has started to do this recently, count to 10. Which we thought was amazing only because we don't count with him really beyong three so we're not sure where he's learnt it from.

ds started when he was about 2 yrs 2 months. We were also surprised because it was all of a sudden but was probably because we cout the stairs on the way to bed.

Carmenere · 05/03/2006 09:28

My dd can almost do it in the right order and she is just 2.

meggmoo · 05/03/2006 09:29

Ah love the stair counting.
WWW do you count with your dd or did she pick it up from somewhere else?

I think dd learnt it at nursery mm.

dinosaur · 05/03/2006 09:45

DS1 - some time shortly after 2nd birthday

DS2 - at about 21 months

Mum2OneAndOneMore · 05/03/2006 09:51

Ds- was about 2 years when he first counted to ten i was very impressed. He can also count to 10 in spanish thanks to dora Grin

He is now 3.5 & can count to 20 Smile

koolkat · 05/03/2006 09:56

DS started counting 1,2,3 at age 18 months. He is now 20 months.

He counts his toes, magnets on the fridge, peas, when he goes upstairs he counts the steps, anything !

We only speak to him in our native language, so he can't count in English yet.

DH is an engineer but I am crap at maths, so hoping he has the maths gene Smile

bubblerock · 05/03/2006 10:09

DS1 could recite his numbers and alphabet very early on but DS2 (2.4) has been able to read his numbers and alphabet since before he was 2. He really shocks me the way he can read a telephone number or something, he learnt them on the room doors on the way up the stairs Grin He can now tell you how many fingers you are holding up.

He watches countdown and has learnt loads from Carol!

Ability to count at this age is not really math, I don't think. It is memory work, like reciting the alphabet. But ability to do sums, eg "if I take away one toy from these 3, how many do i have left?", is more along the lines of math skill.

Dd learnt it from nursery - 2.5 years. Lots of kids can do it earlier, others later Grin

LIZS · 05/03/2006 10:19

Definitely by 2 for both, same with letters/sounds. Do bear in mind there is a huge differnece between being able rote count and recognising number correspondence though.

Marne · 05/03/2006 10:36

DD could count to 10 by 18 months, now she counts evrything.

Nbg · 05/03/2006 10:37

DD has just started and she's 2.5 but struggles to get them in order sometimes.

CountessDracula · 05/03/2006 11:07

about 18 months but we did count all the stairs every time we went up and down which was a LOT!

Hulababy · 05/03/2006 11:09

DD could recite numbers to 10 from about 18-20 months. She could actually count properly around the age of 2-2.5 years, gradually building up.

Sparklemagic · 05/03/2006 11:26

my DS is 3 and a half and he still can't!!!! It's interesting to me, because he's a bright enough boy and very observant in other ways but has just never been interested in numbers - if I'm trying to count up to ten, say stairs or whatever, he's bored by the time I'm half way through and is talking about something else - eg "look mummy, what's that white mark on the bricks? Is it chalk?"

Perhaps I should try and get a word in more - but I figure he's not stupid, he'll get it.

moosh · 05/03/2006 13:14

Ds2 counted to 10 at about 18 months and is just counting to 20 now. He turned 2 last week, he speaks clearly from 1-10 but you can almost make out the numbers 11-20. I think that he hears ds1 (6years) counting all the time for school and we count steps and stairs all the time too. He also recognises circles, triangles squares and stars. But ds1 couldn't count to 20 till he was 3.5 years but he is one of the top academically in his school class now so I don't think it matters how early they learn.
