Did you child "miss" the rolling over stage?

My DD is almost 21 weeks old. She is trying to sit up at the moment, and when gently pulled she'll sit up and then pushes herself to a standing position (obviously supported by somebody).
She seems most happy sitting up or on her feet. She is showing no sign of wanting or trying to roll over. My DH and I have been rolling her on a blanket, and we put her on her tummy a lot, but should be we concerned that she is trying to sit up and not roll?

My little one is 7 months1/2, can sit unaided since she was 6 months old. She does the same as yours Elf, she wants to hold our hands and pull herself up. Since this week end, we have put a chair closely to her and she can grab it to pull herself up and of course fall back in our arms! She can only roll from her back to her tummy, and then crawl backwards!!!! But since she knows she can stand, she hates when we lie her down... so crawling might never happen forward...
Blondie, the bumbo sit are brilliant. She sat in it from 4 months old and she was weaned in it... I am quite sure that it helped our baby to learn the proper posture of seating!!!Smile

Neither of mine rolled over.
They both wanted to sit up.Every other milestone was either on time or early...so i don't think it matters

My DS (7 months) hasn't rolled either but he is strong, has been sitting unaided/unsupported since about 23wks, can stand while holding onto something (but doesn't have the balance if he tries to move!) and is doing some definate 'pre-crawling' moves.

I've found it hard not to worry about it but my HV told me last week that some babies just aren't interested - like they don't see the point in it!

Jessajam · 13/03/2006 14:00

My 7 month old is the same, sits unsupported for AGES, and has been since 6 months, and could sit for good chunks of time unsupported from 5m. But, put him on his tummy and he'll lift his head and shoulders, make a couple of half hearted attempts at a sit up, then get really upset, dribble all over the place and whinge until you turn him over! But, if he's in the bath, and on his tummy (with a supporting arm under his armpits to prevent him glugging the bath water:o) sometimes he whips his legs up and spins over onto his back (cue rapid baby-catching manouvre!). Good to know when the info says "some babies just don't" that it is true! :)

My DS is 22 wks and has been rolling over since 20.... to be honest its now becoming a nightmare cos he cant roll himself back and this causes many resuces throughout the night when he is jammes against the bars of his cot or has managed to spin himself round the wrong way. Very amusing though...... apart from when you are changing his nappy..... Grin He too wants to do nothing but stand up and jump, bounce etc and the door bouncer is an absolute favourite! Thankfully he loves his bumbo too, loves to watch me cook etc - god bless the manufacturers of this product!

fridayschild · 13/03/2006 20:57

DS2 can roll now, hurrah! The little love thinks he is very clever to be able to do such a thing. He is 16 months.....

bumbleweed · 14/03/2006 18:40

longlegs - my dd (21wks) is doing the exact same thing as your ds! - obsessed with rolling onto front, but cant roll back and smashes into the cot side all bloomin' night and needs rescuing!

likes sitting up but shows no interest in standing up at all

7up · 14/03/2006 18:47

my ds 17months and cant roll over . like pagans ds, put him on his back and he just lays there or struggles to get up. at least when i lay him on the bed i know i can leave the room and come back and he aint moved!

Longlegs1972 · 14/03/2006 19:18

Bumbleweed, can your dd sit up unaided yet? My ds is okay supported but then seems to fold in half if you let go! All he wants to is stand up all the time.... last night, well this morning at 5.30am he was moaning, when I went in to replug him he wasn't where I'd left him ..... he was at the top of his cotbed on top of his teddies on his tummy, he looked quite pleased with himself..... does you dd do this too....?

Apologies for multiple messages, pc had a fit....

kleist · 14/03/2006 19:36

My dd HATED anything to do with being on her tummy. Baby massage was a disaster. She also never crawled. BUT she was upright and walking unsupported by just after 10 months. I think she was always happier being a vertical child.

sleepingbag · 14/03/2006 19:47

My DS sat at 24wks but didn't roll until he was 31 wks, he also hated being on his tummy... felt guilty that i wasn't giving him daily 'tummy time' but thought what is the point in making him so upset. Do remember him being very pleased with him self the day he did learn to roll over and i was very excited to!

magicfarawaytree · 14/03/2006 19:53

none of my children rolled over until they could crawl. None of them cruised either crawled - did the standing up holding on to nothing and wobbling cute little thing and then started stepping. Two of the three refused to hold hand to try to walk. dd is a champion climber and although slower to start so is ds1 and dd2 is showing all the signs of following that white knuckle climbing style.

bumbleweed · 14/03/2006 21:05

longlegs, she can sit unaided for, like, a couple of seconds then she just flops over to the side! Also sits better without nappy on, as I have her in huge cloth nappies haha.

she can shuffle backwards on her back but no havent yet found her at t'other end of cot yet (groans in anticipation of what is yet to come).

II have picked her up off her front about 20 times today playing on her mat because she persistently rolls over but cant sustain it for any length of time, but refuses to lie pleasantly on back playing with toys or gazing around, needs rescuing then entertaining!

Longlegs1972 · 15/03/2006 09:30

Mornin, this morning I found ds on his tummy wrong way round with his arm stuck through bars.... Am thinking of either putting him at the top end of cot or getting cot bumpers - what do you think?

bumbleweed · 15/03/2006 10:14

I know cot bumpers are not recommended any more because of suffocation / overheating (?). We used to have a blanket rolled up down side of cot to stop her rolling, but she has started to grab it and so worried about her covering her fact with it.

Not sure hon, I am in same predicament - had to get up 5 times last night to turn her - had rolled in her sleep and couldnt get back!

Sorry Elf we have hijacked your thread about babies who dont roll!

Longlegs1972 · 15/03/2006 22:50

Bumbleweed, should we start our own thread re rolling in their sleep!!! And I also apologise Elf, hijacking threads is frowned upon I imagine, 2nd apology, its cos I;m a newbie.... Blush

jwerb · 25/03/2006 17:00

My 10+ month old can't roll from back to front, but he can crawl and cruise confidently. Neither of my other two discovered rolling till they were at least this age.

evansmummy · 25/03/2006 19:17

Mine neither! Didn't roll til he started crawling at 11 months. Lazy monkey (takes after his mum Grin)
