How many hours per night does your 5 year old sleep for?

My 5 year old DD is put to bed at 8pm but never falls asleep before 10pm. She gets up at 7 so she gets no more than 9 hours sleep a night. Is this normal? It seems like very little sleep to me so I thought I'd do a survey. Her sister is two years younger and sleeps 7-7.30 every night.

Sounds normal to me Smile.

It's hard isn't it as you can't force them to go to sleep! I bought some kids relaxation CDs from Amazon for my dd2 (5) and they really help her to drop off earlier rather than later.

mejon · 25/06/2012 21:16

I'd say about the same for my 5yo too. Bed is at 7.00 but she faffs about after her story and is often still up at gone 8 and sometimes nearer 9. She's up anytime from 6am when she tends to get up for a wee then doesn't go back to sleep. It's an improvement from the 5am wakings we had a few years ago so I'm not complaining as long as she stays in her room until 7.

SizzleSazz · 25/06/2012 21:18

Usually 12 hrs - 7.15 to 7.15, but she is a very 'tired' child.

PepeLePew · 25/06/2012 21:22

About 11.5 hours - usually asleep by 7.30, awake by 7 at the latest. He definitely needs it.

PuppyMonkey · 25/06/2012 21:22

She usually goes to bed at 7.30pm and is asleep within half an hour or so, sometimes a bit of faffing involved so might be longer. She gets up 6.30am.

Summer nights being so light don't help. In winter she sleeps much longer, goes to sleep straight away.

LurcioLovesFrankie · 25/06/2012 21:24

About 9.5 hours sleep for my 4 year old - some children just need less sleep. No point putting him to bed at 7.30 - I have no desire to be woken at 5am. I just hope that between us, school and I can get him reading independently before he genuinely needs less sleep than I do :o

DS will be six fairly soon but still has about 11 hours. Usually in bed for around 7pm and asleep within about half an hour (although I don't check if all's quiet). Up in the morning between 6.30 and 7am

He is knackered out by school mainly I think...

Yama · 25/06/2012 21:28

In bed between 7.30 and 8pm. Up at 7am during the week, later at the weekend. Dd is 6.

FamiliesShareGerms · 25/06/2012 21:30

DS (now 6) has always been an 11 hour boy. He got much better at dropping off when we got a cheap CD player and some story CDs to listen to

treadonthecracks · 25/06/2012 21:31

Usually for DS (5) is about 12 hours. Sometimes it's 11 and sometimes it 12.5 hours.

He has always needed a lot of sleep.

DD had a lot less at 5. At 7 she has about 9 hours. She can manage on less though.

MousyMouse · 25/06/2012 21:32

anything between 10-11 hours per night...

Shakey1500 · 25/06/2012 21:33

Averages about 11 hours. Will be 5 in August.

TheHouseofMirth · 25/06/2012 21:38

DS1 is almost 7 (but was the same at 5 yo) and sleeps from about 9pm to 7.30am so about 10.5 hours.

Esclaffer · 25/06/2012 21:39

She goes to bed at 8 and is usually asleep by 8.30. As she usually she wakes up at 7, she gets 10.5 hours. Weekends are a different story, though, with only 8 hours sleep.

I think that as long as your dd isn't tired, it's fine to get less than 10 hours sleep.

wolvesdidit · 25/06/2012 21:41

about 10.5 hrs

FaLaMa · 25/06/2012 21:44

none!!

well between my 4 and 2 year old thats what it feels like, youngest has literally just gone off, despite, being put down at 7.30 and she will be back up at 6.00, plus will be back up at least twice in the night.

I lie as I type this she is back in my room.

eastendywendy · 25/06/2012 21:44

He usually sleeps 7-6/7

peeriebear · 25/06/2012 21:45

Bed between 8 and half past, always asleep by 9 at my best guess. Wake up at 7 to get ready for school, but we have a slow morning with no rush (school 2 mins away).

Egg · 25/06/2012 21:48

EI have two who are 4.5 yrs. Both go to bed at 7. One goes straight to sleep within minutes but is up at 6/6:30, the other is sometimes awsk

Stopsittingonyoursister · 25/06/2012 21:49

Bed at 7.30, asleep by 8pm usually, and has to be woken for school at 7am, so 11 hours a night. He used to be a terrible sleeper, waking up and coming in to our bed regularly until he was 3.5, and then suddenly got the idea of sleeping through the night.

Egg · 25/06/2012 21:50

Oops, stupid phone. Basically they both have 11 / 11.5 hrs.

6.4 yr old usually asleep by 8 and up at 7.

Declutterbug · 25/06/2012 23:05

Interesting paper on sleep duration in childhood published this year based on a study of 11,500 English children.

Conclusion "Given the wide natural variation of sleep in the childhood population, any recommendations on optimal sleep duration at any age must take into account considerable individual variability."

moonbells · 25/06/2012 23:13

Thanks for that Declutterbug

I have a 4.8yo who is a bedtime refusenik. We finish reading by 7.30 then it's a major dog and pony show of milk requests, mummy requests, footsteps running to the loo, howls that he wants more books reading... we have to be very strong and ignore the performance!

Once asleep he's asleep and hates getting up. Teenager in training.

Average is 8.30 to 6.30 (and that only because I tickle/prod him awake). He would sleep 8.30 to 7.30 if left alone. But then we wouldn't get him to sleep before 9.30 the following night! I think he's on a 25 hour clock.

Hersetta · 26/06/2012 08:48

My DD is 4.10 amd goes to bed at 8.00. She is usually asleep by 8.10 and usually gets up at 7.15 (sometime 30 minutes before, sometimes 30 minutes later) so on average I would say 11 hrs.
