hi frayed knot, thanks, im getting so frustrated because i dont know if hes waking at night so much and grumpy 80% of the time because hes not eating enough. it seems on here that he has the same meals as others but they also have milk. he was a good birth weight and im shoving food in him and he hasnt grown in height in 6 months!

Hi 7's, you have my utmost sympathy, my ds is also allergic to dairy (and eggs)and apart from breastfeeding until 12 months he did not have any milk, and similar probs with growth etc. I expect you have already tried this/looked into it, so am very sorry if my suggestion is no help at all, but Goats Milk works well with ds. He is not allergic to it, and now drinks so much milk and has started growing again - at a very rapid rate. Again, my sympathies - it is so hard and it sounds like you are doing a really amazing job. x

7 - a toddlers tummy is really tiny (I think the size of a walnut). So it doesnt take much to fill up. I give ds food, if he eats it then great, if he doesnt I dont make a fuss. I think that more that you are relaxed about it the more they are. If they pick up that it is an anxiety point for you they will play on it!!

The only time I would be concerned is if they dont look healthy, are tired all the time or underweight. Then if it because an issue speak to your hv or doctor.

I see you posted that he hasnt grown in height - have you measured him and compared him on that chart in the red book (hope that makes sense!!!)
From what you put down I think that sounds enough.

hi bernie bear, glad your ds is thriving on goats milk. ive been told not to try it.

emily05, ds charts have dipped quite a lot on weight and height thats why im concerned.

hes got a developmental health check soon which i forgot about so hopefully theyl let me know if theres any worries, ive also asked paed to bring apt forward

777's my Dd is now 4 but has always eaten like a small horse, she's caught up a little now but was down on the 4th centile for weight, still under 25th & is 25th for height. In the last 15 months she's only put on 2 pounds. At present she eats weetabix, handful of each of shreddies & Rice Krispie Multi-grain with milk, slice of toast or bagel with philly or mashed banana, yoghurt & diluted juice or milk, mid morning snack at nursery is sometimes 2 bowls of cereal. Lunch poached egg on toast with beans, yoghurt or small scoop of ice cream, afternoon snack apple or pancakes sometimes both. Tea, tonight was 3 potato croquettes, chicken chasseur & carrots, 3 big strawberries, glass of juice/water. supper hot chocolate & half an empire biscuit. If I'm making any kind of veg or salad she has to have a bowl to eat whilst she's wating for tea or her next meal!
They actually gave us a booklet at her 36mth check called 'Tempting toddlers' beacue the HV was concerned about her weight. I couldn't afford to feed her more . When she was 16 mths old she'd have days where she'd eat like a pony & others she'd have 2 bits of toast all day, she still had milk too but I think your DS is eating fine and wouldn't worry too much. She was a good birth weight & a friends baby who weighed the same at birth was the same weight at 4 months as DD was at a year. They're all different and they all have good and bad days for appetite. I only wish I could eat as much & stay as slim

7777777 · 02/02/2006 20:54

blimey jbck, wot a good appetite your dd has, thanks for message, i think comments off other people put the seed of doubt in your mind about the size of your kids. il wait and see his paed in few weeks and if hes not worried il carry on feeding as i am and TRY not to be concerned!

hello. how's liam!

Flossam · 02/02/2006 21:03

DS has either two small loaf slices of toast and honey, bowl of porridge or a yoghurt and a banana for breakfast.

For lunch/dinner he has one jar sized meal followed by fruit/yoghurt/once or twice a week a sweet dessert.

For the other meal he usually has a cheese/pate/chicken sandwich, or another jar if the weather is cold and we have been out (ie today).

For snacks he'll have a biscuit or a rice cake or some fruit, usually in the afternoon.

He has two beakers of milk a day. He very much enjoys his food!

7777777 · 02/02/2006 21:04

Hi 7's, I can really relate to you situation with the exception that my lad now eats heaps but is still not growing. DS is 16mths and has been a very demanding baby and like you I can count the really scrummy days on one hand though over the last few months things have been much much better than before. MY lad also cant have dairy but does have soy and rice milk, I dont think he gets through much more than 3/4c a day though. LIke your lad he plummeted through the charts as we didnt get him properly established on solids until he was almost a year old, he just wasnt interested and had all sorts of digestion and belly issues going on. We have a paed here who is determined that the growth and "slow development" (not walking, talking etc) are gluten related but all of the tests have come back negative so unwilling to pull gluten at the moment. Anyway my lad is basically healthy and active and I just try my best not to worry too much. All the best YM

7777777 · 02/02/2006 22:03

hi ym, so your little lad isnt walking or talking at 16months? youre the first person on here including the allergy threads that has said that there child is miserable and a handful becoz of their belly, thankyou, wot a relief that im not alone

OP posts:
nulnulcat · 02/02/2006 22:39

definately a handful because of food she is always in the worst mood ever when she gets up and has massive tantrums which only stop when i persuade her to eat something then she swings the other way and goes totally hyperactive finally got hv and dr to agree it wasnt normal and referred to peadatrician (sorry cant spell it) where they are looking into possibility of diabetes /food intolerances both of which run in my family

7777777 · 02/02/2006 22:51

hi nulcat, think you spelt it right, glad you got referred.

its frustrating isnt it with docs etc, my doc yesterday referred to ds as being a pain! i was really annoyed and retaliated that he wasnt a pain, he was in pain.

i get embarrassed ringing the docs now, becoz they are so unsupportive and the paed gets the ump because he says the docs should help inbetween the four monthly visits to him.

its so difficult because as a mum you know youre child isnt quite normal and its actually proving that there is something wrong. good luck to you. let me know how it goes

nulnulcat · 02/02/2006 22:57

thanks 7 my dr is so useless he has been struck off now but dd has had loads of probs since birth she would scream in pain for up to 18hours a day whenever i tried to put her down gp kept fobbing me off with telling me it was colic constipation etc i was breast feeding so knew it wasnt ended up taking her to casualty one day and she had severe reflux and had been suffering for 2 months apparently according to my gp projectile vomiting is normal and i was an overanxious mother fgs!! it was a locum who finally referred us and pead. couldnt believe with all her health problems we hadnt been referred sooner! going back next week for loads of tests will let you know how it goes

7777777 · 02/02/2006 23:00

hope it goes ok please do let me know, my ds screamed for 23hours once!i called my parents round and we were all so distressed it was awful so i can empathise totally. they said refulx for him but hes never been sick once in his life.

OP posts:
nulnulcat · 02/02/2006 23:05

7 they are not always sick with reflux it was only when she started i realised there was a problem its like heartburn in adults when you get that horrible burning sensation in back of your throat, when you lie them down the stomach acid comes back up its only sick if they have just fed she now sleeps on her tummy has done since 8 weeks old now and it seems to help her she stopped her medication at 18 months and touchwood no problems with that now but if she runs round after eating she is sick. must be horrible for them when they are little babies tho

alexsmum · 02/02/2006 23:41

re the not growing in 6 months thing- we have just had the same with ds2. took him to get measured/weighed on 2nd birthday and he had only grown 1cm in past six months.took him again yesterday, (6 months on) and he has grown 5.5 cm!!! so has had a spurt! they go in waves.
today he has eaten the following-
big bowl of porridge
a banana
a slice of toast
couple of spoons of leek and pt soup
toasted cheese sandwich
a yoghurt
small sandwich for snack
half a kitkat
an orange
5 swedish meatballs/pasta/peas
a few prawn crackers!
another orange.

god it seems loads when i write it down like that.but he has been asking for food all day-obviously still in his growth spurt!
