From 12-15 months his first few words were:

Yeah!
Ta (used to mean "give it to me" Hmm)
Hiya
Shoes
Cheese
(Ba)nana
Again

He'd also woof, meow and quack.

peeriebear · 05/03/2012 20:21

DD1 "no" (we should have heeded the early warning!:o)
DD2 "Daddy"

AllPastYears · 05/03/2012 20:24

Can't remember the very first, but "so" (sock) was one of DD1's early favourites Confused.

Firsttimer78 · 05/03/2012 20:25

Daddy
Diiiiiirty! (repeated ad infinitum)
Poo
Cheese
Doggie

Both DCs' first word was CAT! (actually "CA!" but the meaning was clear).

ShowOfHands · 05/03/2012 20:29

DD's first word outside of the normal dada/mama/nana random sounds was 'look!' at 7 months. At 18 months she spoke utterly fluently. It was really freaky.

DS is 6 months and can say dada, mama, nana and pffft. None of them mean the slightest thing except pffft which means 'milk now servant'.

SootySweepandSue · 05/03/2012 20:31

The cats name and her name.

WorrisomeHeart · 05/03/2012 20:34

16mth old DS's vocab has just exploded recently, but from earliest words he said -

Dadda Hmm
Mumma
Boo (book)
Ball
Yeah
Oh da (oh dear)
Ta

And he can woof, meow, moo, baa, tweet and move his arm like an elephants trunk.

MysteriousHamster · 05/03/2012 20:36

Tickle was the first word - usually 'tickletickletickle' all in one

Then Daddy, uh oh, oh dear, oh no (spot a theme?), bye-bye and hiya

This was all approx 16-18 months, no he's 20 months and it's fascinating to see he's suddenly picking up stuff a lot quicker and doing more repetition.

MrsSchadenfreude · 05/03/2012 20:41

DD1 - "Noddy".
DD2 - "Shoes".

DD1 walked at 10 months but didn't speak until she was three. DD2 spoke really early - you could have a conversation with her at 16 months, but she didn't walk until 20 months. I used to have conversations with her about why she wasn't walking - "Don't need to. You and (Dsis) bring me what I want. I can crawl. Don't need to walk." Confused It was actually quite surreal.

They're now 11 and 13, and both quite normal!

pigsmightnevercease · 05/03/2012 21:37

DS is 17 months and says:

Hello
Dat (that)
Wadat (what's that)
Dada
Mama
Bear
Bye bye
Yeah
No
Baby
Boobie Blush
Eye
Ear
Teeth
Peppa Pig Blush

and probably some others but they're the main ones.

SingingSands · 05/03/2012 21:39

"Peekaboo!" from DD

"Car" from DS

NinthWave · 05/03/2012 21:46

DS2 is 16mo and says:

Nana (banana) - his first word
Mama
Dada
Aya (Alex - DS1's name)
No
Who'sthat?
What'sthat?
Gone
Hiya
Ta
Bye-bye

and some others I can't think off the top of my head.

DS1 didn't speak til he was almost 2, so we've been doing baby signing with DS2 in case he was a late talker too. He knows signs for milk, sleep, please, nappy, food, hot.

Tmesis · 05/03/2012 21:53

DS - duck

DD1 - peas (please) -- used in sense of "I WANT IT NOW!" but it sounded polite...

DD2 hasn't said anything yet

JimbosJetSet · 05/03/2012 22:06

It's reassuring to see that kids all start talking at completely different ages. DD is 18 months and is only just starting to make recognisable sounds, a 'woof' and a 'miaow!'

DesperateHousewife21 · 06/03/2012 10:01

Ds said 'duck' at about 13 months, he was saying mama and dada by then too.

Hes now nearly 20 months and probably has a vocab of about 50 words! He's always coming out with something new it's amazing.

waitingforskinnyjeanstofit · 06/03/2012 10:37

DS said cat, shut-door, uh-oh and mama (but sadly meant banana) at around 12 months.
I'll never forget him shouting 'mama!' at the top of his voice in the car and me feeling all proud that he'd learnt my name...only to turn round and see a massive poster on bananas on the sife of Lidl. Sniff.

Tinytoto · 06/03/2012 10:44

DS is 21 months old. He can say say mama, dada and sometimes I think he says 'no' but very inconsistent... is it that normal?

CailinDana · 06/03/2012 10:48

Children's language varies massively Tinytoto. A friend of mine didn't utter a word until she was nearly four, when she came out with a full sentence, almost causing her mother to keel over in fright! She's now a barrister, so clearly there was nothing wrong with her. Does your DS point to things and try to communicate in other ways?

franke · 06/03/2012 10:51

I was getting a bit twitchy when ds2 was saying only single words for what felt like ages. I remember my unbridled joy when he finally put 2 words together for the first time, "Yucky dinner."

CailinDana · 06/03/2012 10:53

Hilarious franke, and bloody typical Grin

RealLifeIsForWimps · 06/03/2012 10:53

DS (18mo) is a good talker (prob says around 30 recognisable words in context) but he was late pulling up/walking and still struggles with coordination a bit. I think they just get things at different times. My niece said hardly anything until she was almost 3 and is very bright (not a boast as not a blood relative so nowt to do with my genes Grin).

DS's cutest thing is when he hails a taxi and really says "taxi" in the right tone with the emphasis on the "i" as he sticks his arm out

festivalwidow · 06/03/2012 11:42

I eagerly awaited 'mama', 'love' and 'hug'.
I got 'bird', 'fish', 'dog', 'cat', 'spidrrrr' and 'up'.
'Daddy' came fairly shortly after that, 'mummy' took ages!

Tinytoto · 06/03/2012 11:56

CailinDana: thanks for the reassurance! DS does point and understands simple instructions and grunts in agrreement when asked if he wants something...I would be in wee but of a shock too if my DS spoke in sentences...lol
