Baby not crawling or moving

Hello,

I was just wondering whether I'm worrying unnecessarily or should I see my GP?

My dd is 11 months and will be one in 3 weeks. She is a happy and sociable child, is able to feed herself and sits very well. She is also able to roll on to her stomach and back again.

What I'm worried about, is that she is showing no signs of crawling and not pulling herself up to stand. Is this normal? All her friends, even those a month or two younger are on the move and pulling themselves up?

Should I be worried or have I lazy baby? Grin

Any advice gratefully received xx

I would go and see my GP. I am not saying anything is wrong, but it will put your mind at rest or put yoiu in touch with services you might need. While you are at it have a look at a development checklist. There is one in your redbook and see how overall development is going. Put any queries to your GP. Crawling isnt a particualrly good indicator of development as not all children crawl so have a look more broadly at what she is doing and see if you have any reasons for concern

Thanks Firsttimer, I will make an appointment with the GP, hopefully it will be fine xx

I would wait for the 1 year check up with the health visitor. Several of my friends babies didn't crawl till they were 1

ImpatientOne · 21/02/2012 19:54

I would speak to HV rather than GP as they are more familiar with milestones and local services if relevant :) My friend's baby wasn't mobile at 1 but a few months later and we can't stop her!

zumm · 21/02/2012 19:59

This just sounds like one end of normal. I can't quite remember when my DD started crawling (make that moving) but it was probably around 11 mths. But she then didn't start walking until almost 1 & 1/2 yrs whereas my sister's kid was walking at 8 mths. Pl don't worry too much. If she seems otherwise healthy all is probably fine.
Oh and apparently, I got up and walked one day with no crawling at all. I was about 13 mths.
Perhaps leave it til her next formal checkup and then ask the GP to examine, as said above.

zumm · 21/02/2012 20:00

Or HV.

Firsttimer7259 · 21/02/2012 20:06

HVs are very variable in terms of their training so I tend not to rely on them. GPs can be contrary too but...start were you feel comfortable but listen hard and evaluate what people tell you. I saw GP well before 11 months about my D and got refered to pead but there was a lot more going on than not crawling.

MaMattoo · 21/02/2012 20:11

Yes..I had a lazy one too. Never crawled, rarely pulled himself up. Got up and walked at X'mas..just like that..at 18 mo.
See the Dr anyway..but its not rare..:)

margoandjerry · 21/02/2012 20:13

My dd didn't crawl. But got up and walked at 14 mo.

33goingon64 · 21/02/2012 20:27

DS is one in a week and has never crawled, hates being on his front, doesn't even try to get on his knees. He does walk holding on to fingers though. HV said not to worry at all and they will all do things in their own time. If she is sitting that's all that matters at this stage.

tattyteddy · 21/02/2012 20:32

Thanks for all your comments. My dd had a HV check about a month ago, and they seemed to think everything was fine.

I do think she's a bit lazy and I can just picture her getting up one and walking out of the blue! I will give the HV a ring first and see whether they think it's worth talking to the GP.

Apparently I was walking at 10 months, she obviously takes after her dad!

Thanks again for all your replies xxx

Well, my DD was a bottom shuffler, started at 11 months and 3 weeks. Didn't pull up until 17 months Grin, then walked at 18 months. My niece didn't crawl until 13 months then walked at 17 months. Some are late, but if you're at all concerned speak to HV/GP. They'll probaby advise you to wait a couple of months at least to see if she moves, or at least that's what I would expect.

HolyNoSheDittantBatman · 21/02/2012 20:43

I wouldn't worry tbh. Go to the GP if it will put your mind at rest, but 11 months is within normal range I would say.

Does she bear weight on her legs if you stand her up? I would be concerned if her legs were floppy/she couldn't bear weight on them, but if she can then probably just a lazy one!

Sittinginthesun · 21/02/2012 20:43

My youngest was just the same. Didn't roll until 10 months, crawled at 12 months, and walked 3 days short of 18 months.

Just the way some of them are.

tattyteddy · 21/02/2012 20:55

Thanks everyone, she can bear weight on her legs as she'll stay standing for a few seconds if stand her next to the coffe table etc. I hope that's a good sign. Xx

My DD was much the same, though not keen on rolling and totally unwilling to bear any weight on her legs at the same age. In fact she didn't crawl till she was 15m and didn't walk till 22m (though now she's started she wants to walk everywhere!).

I took her to the GP when she was 20m (after useless interaction with HV) and he said that walking is considered normal between 9 and 15m, but they add an extra 6m on for the late starters. Because we were nearly at the end of that period he referred us to the hospital. As it happened she had started walking by the time her appointment came round, but I was still a bit worried about her foot positioning so went anyway, and she was diagnosed as being significantly hypermobile - her joints are very loose and flexible, so it is much harder for her to be stable. This isn't a problem per se, but it does explain why it has taken her so long.

So, in summary (!) probably nothing to worry about yet, enjoy having a baby who is still more or less where you left them if you turn your back, but if you get closer to two with no signs of movement, check in with a HCP.

tattyteddy · 21/02/2012 21:22

2tired, are they're are early signs of hypermobile? Xx

OP posts:
2tired2bewitty · 21/02/2012 22:01

DDs joints move beyond where you would expect them to lock (her knees and elbows for example) but I'm not sure how easy that is to spot in really small children.

To be honest the only reason I pursued the Dr route was because my MIL is a social worker and she expressed concern about how DD placed her feet when she was standing (she walked holding hands for a while before she could do it alone). The Dr recommended lots of strength building exercise, like dancing or gymnastics - do you have tumbletots in your area?

tattyteddy · 21/02/2012 22:09

Thanks 2tired, i do think there is a local tumble tots - ill check out the times xx

my DS was able to tolerate lying on his front for a very short time as a 12 month old- he made no attepmy to roll over and didnt push up to a crawl position until 14 mths. All he did was sit and sit and sit! my dS had been the same 10 years earlier so I was not too worried He eventuall pulled up to stand around 15-16 mths and walked very safely anf sensibly at 18 mths and 5 days. He's 2 now- climbs stuff/ runs/ kicks a ball so no harm done.

2tired2bewitty · 21/02/2012 22:14

My mum always says that when yours can't do something yet you only meet babies who've been doing it for ages. As soon as yours achieves whatever this milestone is you instantly meet loads of people who say, oh yes mine didn't do that till they were older than yours. I have definitely found this to be true!

tattyteddy · 21/02/2012 22:23

She does enjoy rolling over. She'll probably surprise me one of these days!

I think I should stop comparing her to other babies. She's very chatty and noisey. Good sleeper too (touch wood) Smile xx

2tired - that's really interesting about the hypermobile thing. I wonder whether both I and DD have this - I am v double jointed, had 'clicky hips' as a baby, etc. Never thought this might explain the late walking, crawling etc - in me and DD. Thanks for passing on that info - it rings true. OP check your DHs joints ;)

tattyteddy · 22/02/2012 16:24

Will do Zumm xx

My baby was exactly like this. She actually didn't end up crawling until almost 15 months and still isn't walking now (almost 17 months) and has only just started pulling up.

She didn't want to bear weight or bounce on her legs at all which concerned me... I took her to health visitor, GP and a friend who is in pediatrics when she was 11 months (and doing all the things your child is doing) and they all expressed concern about her hips.

She was referred to a consultant and saw him just after her first birthday, then had an x ray and an ultrasound. I've been scheduled to see the consultant again in 6 months time but he assured me that shes just a bit lazy, a talker-not-a-walker, and that she would do everything in due time.. and that I should enjoy her being immobile while I can!

I know its hard when much younger children are doing it all (and I had one particular freakout when she was the ONLY baby at swimming / gymboree / baby group who couldn't crawl, then walk...) but try not to worry too much and take your baby to the GP or see the health visitor.

Even if it is hips it can all be sorted. Something someone said to me was 'You never see five year olds rolling to school.. they all walk eventually' :)
