DS absolutely soaking every morning

Hope this is the right place to put this, and hoping someone has a great idea to help us out! Every single morning my poor DS wakes up absolutely soaked, right up his back and tummy. He is 16 months old and, bless him, he never complains or cries and sleeps through the night without it upsetting him. So, every morning before we do anything else he has to be wiped/washed down, bed changed, sleeping bag washed, and dressed ready for the day. We have always gone back to Pampers extra dry after trying other nappies to see if that would make a difference, and now put two on him to soak up any excess, which doesn't really work either. We've tried different sizes and not letting him drink after a certain time in the evening except for his milk at bed time but nothing seems to stop the excessive wetting. I just feel so sorry for him lying in all his pee :( My DH, in his infinite wisdom, said today that we should just get him potty trained and then this would stop Hmm. Obviously, DS is not ready for this and DH knows nothing about child rearing Grin This has being going on for months. Any ideas or recommendations?

This happens to DS occasionally, and seems to be more to do with the position he sleeps in than how much he has drunk. Lidl nappies are great and seem to leak less than other nappies (and cheaper too, which is always good! Grin)

Nagoo · 19/02/2012 20:20

Is his willy 'down' in the nappy? All I can think is that he is peeing up the front of it?

jenrendo · 19/02/2012 20:21

Ah mama I'm in Canada so no hope of Lidl here, unless I take a suitcase back when I come over to visit Grin. It is honestly every single night. I wonder if he gets a gap in the front or back and it all just runs out. Maybe we have to put them on tighter?

Yep - not much to add other than trying loads of different nappies and getting the wash on first thing in the morning...

jenrendo · 19/02/2012 20:21

Yes nagoo, willy is always pointing down :)

BillyBollyBandy · 19/02/2012 20:23

So you have tried a size or 2 larger, and done it up tighter? Did that help at all?

jenrendo · 19/02/2012 20:24

Hmmm, he does quite a lots of rampaging around his cot in the night. I wonder if his willy moves position alot too?! It is always pointing down in the morning though. The wetness is more up his back etc than down his legs. I guess I'll be off to the shop tomorrow to buy a few little packets of others to try, again!

Does he have a bath before bed? My DS drinks a LOT of bath water in cups, sponges, flannels etc! This has in the past caused him leaks in the night? Also (am the mum of 2 older girls here so needed to be told) I make sure his willy is pointed downwards when his nappy goes on otherwise he's more likely to leak (this is probably very obvious to most - except me!!) You could try an extra large nappy like a Pampers size 6? Maybe he just needs the extra absorbency? Good luck!

jenrendo · 19/02/2012 20:26

Yes Billy gone up a size and done it tighter round the waist, to no avail.

Nagoo · 19/02/2012 20:26

Is the nappy full, or just not absorbing it? I'd be inclined to try a smaller nappy to have it on tighter?

jenrendo · 19/02/2012 20:27

Ha ha Nota he just started drinking the bath water last night! Just wondering if it would be worth giving up the bedtime bottle? When did you all do that?

Scootergrrrl · 19/02/2012 20:27

What about padding his nappy out with a sanitary towel or something, to give a bit of extra absorbency where it's needed?

TheLaineyWayIsEssex · 19/02/2012 20:28

My ds went through a stage of this, but it would wake him up - usually at 4am.
I tried various things, like going up a size, and putting n 2 nappies (the second one keeping the first in place.)
For us the only thing that has worked is using pampers active fit at night, he is such a wriggler and they stay in place much better than the other brands we tried, which would be a bit twisted by the morning.

jenrendo · 19/02/2012 20:29

Nagoo the nappy is completely drenched and so heavy, so is obviously full. Maybe I should try changing him again before we go to bed? His sleeping bag is one which zips down from the top so it may be quite easy....

Lainey I might just go and buy a packet of those tomorrow thanks!

Scooter I might just try that!

Maybe try a fleece wrap? I used them over cloth nappies and they are really absorbent and snugly (not crunchy/stiff), you could try a pre-loved one from eBay first to see if it helps, I think it'd be perfect :)

kiwidreamer · 19/02/2012 20:44

To clarify not sure I was very clear lol a fleece wrap overtop of disposable :)

OlderNotWiser · 19/02/2012 20:47

My DS was like this. Never actually bothered him, but did make a lot of washing. If he isnt too troubled, does it matter too much..? I say that simply because we never really solved it! Bigger nappies did so much for so long, and then back to square 1!

redspottedfrog · 19/02/2012 20:50

I have this problem with my 2yo DS. We've gone up to size 6 Pampers Active Fit and it still happens. But I confess we have never though about the position of his willy! I just asked DH, who gets him ready for bed, and he is pretty sure that it's usually pointing upwards. So, from tomorrow, we shall be pointing it downwards instead. Thanks ladies! Grin

tostaky · 20/02/2012 22:42

my DS is 3.5 and i have this problem too.... using underjams tonight for the first night which is for older children...
im at my wits ends...

Aniseeda · 20/02/2012 23:04

I had this with my DS1 and the only thing which ever kept him dry was old fashioned terry nappies and plastic pants. Washing the nappies was worth it as I am certain he woke more in the night due to being wet and uncomfortable and then, once awake, would decide that he was hungry and a milky drink would do very nicely thank you! He slept through once we started using the terries.

Never had this with DS2 or DD and never got to the bottom of why disposables just didn't last him overnight.

cerys74 · 21/02/2012 09:12

This may sound silly, but would it be possible to do a nappy change around 11pm? My DS is 8mo and we've had a few 'soaking' incidents, so we change his nappy around then and he never really wakes up. Would this work for kids who are a bit older?

We've also noticed that the frilly bits around the leg of the nappy HAVE to be pulled to the outside of the nappy when he's wearing one, otherwise leaking is inevitable (Tesco nappies, not sure about other brands)...

Dontbugmemalone · 21/02/2012 09:20

I would also suggest lidl nappies, they are very good IME. When I had this problem with DS, I would change him before I went to bed which helped.

Dontbugmemalone · 21/02/2012 09:22

Ah just saw you don't have lidl there. Hmm, I don't know what brands you have there but stay away from huggies, they are absolutely rubbish.
