Hi everyone,

Have a 6 month old, who doesn't seem to have any development issues (unless you consider chubbiness a development issue!). I am doing some research re: sign language. Wondering what your thoughts are on Makaton vs. baby signing.

Also, have you found that signing of some sort really does help the child communicate?

Thanks for your sage advice!

Look at the makaton website, www.makaton.org, to find out more about Makaton signing for babies. Read the blogs and see how brilliant it is! You. An even get an Ap for your phone that shows the signs and symbols.

My children started signing at seven months. If you want to learn makaton, watch something special on cbeebies. Children love Justin Fletcher. I taught myself BSL at first using the Let's Sign books by Cath Smith which you can get from the library. The dictionary is especially good. Another fun way to learn is with Terry the Monkey, which uses monkeys to teach signs. Google terry the monkey or terrythemonkey. Terry is brilliant for animal signs. It's amazing how quickly children pick up signs.

We started using BSL from the day our DD was born & shes 10 months & can ask for more, snack & a few others.

Makaton isn't really used anymore in mainstream or adult settings. Sing & sign is based on BSL.

Bloody fab classes! We both love them!
