DS takes ALL his clothes off when he goes to toilet

DS is 2.9 and the last few days he has started the strange thing of wanting to be completely naked when he goes to the loo. He usually takes his pants and trousers (sometimes socks) off anyway in case of any dribbles but now he totally freaks out and won't go near the toilet unless he takes off every bit of clothing. I keep telling him he only needs to take his pants off but he insists on stripping off. Our bathroom isn't the warmest room, especially in a morning, so he will sit there shivering with goose bumps complaining that he's 'feezing' whilst he does his business. What is it all about??

No idea, but my DC4 used to do the same. And then squat on the loo - feet on the seat. Truly, truly odd. He grew out of it :o.

cheesesarnie · 21/01/2012 21:33

ds1 used to do this for poos.he only stopped last year hes almost 11!

sosickofthesoundofscreaming · 21/01/2012 21:35

Does he go to a nursery, and if so - what is their routine for toilet visits?

LynetteScavo · 21/01/2012 21:36

Mine too Hassled! I think he's grown out of it. He now locks the door!

4madboys · 21/01/2012 21:49

ds4 does this, i am assuming he will grow out of it! he goes to pre-school two days a week from 9-3 and used the toilet there and they havnet mentioned his 'stripping' so i dont think he does it there?

fragglerocker · 21/01/2012 21:50

sosick he does go to nursery and I've taken him to toilet there but he just pulls his pants down, doesn't even take them off like at home.
He doesn't get naked when his dad takes him at home so maybe it's just me he does it with. He does freak out if he gets anything on his clothes so I can understand him wanting to take his bottom half off but why he has to be starkers is a mystery. Glad i'm not the only only confused about it one tho! Maybe it's a boy thing Grin

eeek. I am just about to start toilet training with my DS. My DD was no problem - hope DS doesn't head in this direction!! (Cold bathroom here too).

I was just asking re nursery because the setting both my children have attended combines a nappy changing area with the actual toilets/potties, so the children who are a bit older are still surrounded by younger ones being 'stripped' a bit more for the whole process. I just wondered if there was some confusion, perhaps. Sounds like this is definitely not the case.

So long as he is otherwise happy, I guess you just wait until the stage passes. The weirdness that is children, though - they never cease to surprise!

exexpat · 21/01/2012 22:20

I would say that sounded weird if i hadn't read it on here before.

I seem to remember a thread on here a while back in which several MNers confessed that they and/or their DHs/DPs still stripped naked to do a poo. Shock So don't be too sure he'll grow out of it.

fragglerocker · 21/01/2012 22:24

The nappy changing room is seperate from the toilets at his nursery but he always goes with his friend so I think he just copies his friend by pulling his pants down. His friend might be a bit freaked out if my DS started stripping next to him Grin I think it's just one of his 'things' I will just have to go along with Smile

Ds2 (5 yrs) also strips off completely for a poo! I've caught him doing the squatting on the seat thing as well! No idea why and he doesn't seem to know why either when I've asked him. Strange child! I'm assuming he only does this at home.

GladysLeap · 21/01/2012 22:42

My DS used to do this as well, until he was a teen. He may still do it, at 24, but obviously I wouldn't know now

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 21/01/2012 22:43

My ds did this too for about the first year after he toilet trained , he would insist on doing it in public loos too, cue mummy holding bundles of clothing and trying to get a cold boy redressed while avoiding gross floors! He still will take his entire bottom lot right off, trousers pants socks and shoes to poo, sometimesn, but has progressed to leaving his top half on. I don't stress about it now, assume he will adjust in his own good time like everything else.

Lovemyboys01 · 21/01/2012 22:44

My DH still does thisHmm

ChippingInLovesEasterEggs · 21/01/2012 22:46

I was going to post about the thread last year - but exexpat beat me to it. I was astounded by the number of adults that have to do it or they can't poo?! & yet we still didn't get an answer as to why - none of them really seemed to know why.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 21/01/2012 22:56

DS1 used to do this, but seems to have stopped recently. He is 3.5.

Floggingmolly · 21/01/2012 23:00

It is a boy thing, for some odd reason. Both of mine did it, but not my dd Confused

CousinCairngormMcWomble · 21/01/2012 23:18

My DH does this sometimes too Blush

Sorry.. That wasn't helpful. Pretty sure he would only do it at home though, not at work or anything, so there is hope Hmm

Ginlord · 21/01/2012 23:22

You must stomp this on the head right away, before you know it it'll twenty years later and you're being called up at 3am as he's been caught flashing down the local park.

NumptyMum · 21/01/2012 23:25

OMG - DS does this sometimes, only for a poo, started doing it after a few months of potty training so I have no idea why but I'm amazed to read that so many other boys (just boys?!) do this... though a bit worried to hear that they might not grow out of it. However to reassure the OP, DS doesn't do this at nursery or while out, it only happened at home. Once we became aware of the pattern, if he went up to do a poo we'd pointedly ask him NOT to take off his clothes (and checked on him, congratulated him if he hadn't). His reason for doing this, so far as he could explain, was that he was worried the poo would get on his clothes (seemed to think it could go upwards as well as downwards), so I wonder if at some point something happened to make him think this? Anyway, it seems to be happening less now... I think.

bonzo77 · 21/01/2012 23:29

My ex's housemate used to do this. Just for poos though. He was 32. I know because there was no lock on the bathroom door.

daenerysstormborn · 21/01/2012 23:29

my ds is 6.5 and does this. he's in yr 2 now, but when he started in reception, the teacher did a home visit, ds spent the whole time sat upstairs on the loo, stark naked and grunting very loudly. he gets it from dh Wink

peeriebear · 21/01/2012 23:35

When I was at a music festival last year with an extended group of friends, a friend-of-a-friend said he was putting off going to the toilets for as long as possible, and it was for this very reason (had to entirely strip for a poo). He was quite matter of fact about it and knew it was strange for a grown man! I have heard of a couple of other adults that do it too.

peeriebear · 21/01/2012 23:36

It's all males mentioned on this thread isn't it? I've not heard of any females who do.

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 21/01/2012 23:44

I think there were a couple of ladies on the thread last year who did this but the vast majority were men.

howdoo · 22/01/2012 00:23

DS2 does this and he is 6. He says he "can't be bothered" to hold his tshirt up - doesn't explain why the trousers and socks have to come off too though!
