Hi,

Do you believe in the fact that a toddler will be 1/2 their adult height at 2yrs.

LIZS · 13/01/2006 13:29

No , ds was way off average at 2 but has caught up at 7, so doubt he will particualrly slow down.

Babyblue2 · 13/01/2006 13:34

If so, mine's gonna be smaller than me and i'm only 5'2"!!!!

Cha · 13/01/2006 13:35

Someone told me that a boy is half his adult height at 2 and a girl at 2 1/2. If that is so my daughter will be at least 6 ft when she's fully grown - quite likely as that is what I am. Thought she at least would be smaller tho as dp only 5.9ft. Ds was exactly 3ft at two but son's are always taller than their mums so he will be over 6ft I am sure. Basically it is only a rough guideline I think!

WigWamBam · 13/01/2006 13:37

My dd was 3'2" at the age of 2, so I sincerely hope not!

WigWamBam · 13/01/2006 13:39

Good grief, if the 2.5 year for girls is right that would put dd at 6'7" ... can't be right.

Cha · 13/01/2006 13:42

Well, they do say that each generation gets taller. Terrifyingly so, it seems. It can't be right. Can it? (she says in a small voice)

WigWamBam · 13/01/2006 13:44

I cannot believe that me (5'9") and dh (6'2") could possibly produce a 6'7" daughter! I know each generation gets progressively taller but I can't believe the difference would be that much.

Although she's going to be as tall as she's going to be, and there's not much that anyone can do about it!

Carameli · 13/01/2006 13:54

I wil have to look into that 2 1/5 for girls a bit more, like others here my daughter will tower above me. Now 2yrs 3mths and 92cm... yikes.

mummyhill · 13/01/2006 13:59

Ohh goodness my two are going to be huge I am 5'7" and dh is 6'1". DD is on line to be 6" and is ds (15 weeks) keeps going the way he is atm he will be tall enough to go out with your dd without embarassing her (apart from th age gap) WWB.

WigWamBam · 13/01/2006 13:59

Have a look at this height calculator - it's apparently pretty accurate.

WigWamBam · 13/01/2006 14:00

Do I sense a match made in heaven, mummyhill? I'm sure she'd love a toyboy ...

Jensmum · 13/01/2006 14:01

I thought it was twice the height they are at 3 - "double the height a 3, that's the height they'll be"

If it is right my dd wil be about 6'4" so I really hope it's not

mythumbelinas · 13/01/2006 14:03

I just did the height calculator for my two dd's. 166 and 164cm. I'm 166cm. I'm happy with that

mummyhill · 13/01/2006 14:07

whew thanks wwb that shows DD's estimated height at 5'7" same as her mum. Will wait with interest to see how tall ds is at 2, he was 2'0.6" long when last measured in november.

cathyspam · 13/01/2006 14:11

My little man is going to be a 6 footer! No surprises really - i am only 5ft 4" but DH is 6ft 3" so it makes sense I suppose.

lact8 · 13/01/2006 14:46

unless i 'm doing something wrong here, my ds2 only gonna be 5 ft 3!! but he's full head taller than all friends at playgroup his age already...may have something to do with me measuring him with ds1's little ruler tho.....

Reading the little 'red book,' boys' expected height is average height of parents plus 7.5cm; daughters' is -7.5cm. Anything within 10cm either side (8.5 for girls) is 'normal.' Looking at the averages (again, on the charts in the 'red book') suggests that a girl's adult height will be just less than double her height at 2; a boy's will be just over.
There again, they're all individuals, and short of hormones/scythes there's nothing that we parents can do about their future height!

CaptainDippy · 13/01/2006 20:47

Mmmmmm, this is all so interesting - according to the BBC height checker thingy - my DD1 is going to be about 165cm - Sounds ok to me - She'll probably tower over me by the time she is 12 or so - I am only 5ft - DH is 6ft1" - Bless!!

Aloha · 13/01/2006 20:48

I hope not. Ds will be a real shortarse. And I am 5'8" and dh is 6'4"+ so it would be v unfair

Piffle · 13/01/2006 20:51

hope not ds was 2m tall on his 2nd birthday at 12 yrs he is 5ft 1
either or he will be very tall
dd is a shortie, she has Noonan Syndrome which will keep her petite - she may just get to 5ft if she is lucky and will always be very slim
Like Kylie maybe

nooka · 13/01/2006 21:39

The most accurate height predictors include both the child's current hieght and the parent's heights. But they are all give or take 5-6cm. My two were both predicted to be 6'1" last time I checked. Seems likely they will be tall as dh is 6'5" and I am 5'10". dd is almost the same size as ds now (16 mths between them) and in size 7-8 clothes at just over 5. I rather hope she's going to stop growing some time!

jetlagdZebra · 15/01/2006 20:56

i don't think these rules of thumb are any good at all because we all know people who were very tall all thru childhood & then stopped growing at age 12... or who were the class runt all the way thru childhood then sprouted up in teen years to overtake everybody. We all know people who are much taller or shorter than their parents, too.

fsmail · 15/01/2006 21:27

I was really tall at primary school and then became a shorty. My one sister is 5.1 and the other is 5.7 so you can't necessarily go on the parents height. I hope my DS will certainly have a spurt or he will only be 5 7 and his father is 6 ft.

MeAndMyBoy · 15/01/2006 21:31

Me and MIL have been waiting til DS got to 2.5yrs to measure him, we'd heard 2 for girls and 2.5 for boys. Aloha I'm the same as you 5"4 and DH is 6"3 so hoping Ds takes after Daddy, but when we measured him he'd be 5"10 - fairly average if not a little bit on the short side poor chap I SO hope not.

Fingers crossed he hits the taller gene soon and takes after Daddy, time will tell
