How old was your child when they moved from cot to bed? How long can I get away with it!?

DD is now 2.7 and still happily in a big cotbed. She sleeps no problem until 8 in the morning, and then stays in her cot and I can hear her playing and singing.

She's the only one of her peer group in a cot still, but I just think if it 'aint broke don't fix it .... oh and I'm not really a morning person, so she's contained until I'm ready to get up [selfish moment]!

Is there any reason why I should think about getting a bed for her?

DS1 is 21 months and is going into a bed in the next few weeks, mainly because I want to get bunkbeds for him and DS1 and have sold his cot to a friend who will need it in Feb! Am beginning to think I am being a little hasty but he slept ok in a bed on holiday last summer...

DS1 was 2.3 when he moved into a bed, mainly because he was vaulting over the sides of his cot! Once they can climb in and out then I would say there's no point in the bars.

But if your child is happy in a cot then keep her there as long as you can. Don't upset the applecart. My DS2 is a pretty rubbish sleeper and I don't think a bed is going to make that much difference to him.

DS1 stayed in his cot bed until he was 3. Just didn't want a bigger bed, but had to move out when DS2 was born.

Well Mandy I think that partly depends on the child. DS stays in bed very well (he's nearly 5) but was moved to a bed at 2.3. He went through a very short phase in the high summer of getting up when it got light but that was our fault because when he woke and called for us we used to shout back "just get up". So we got a light on a timer and have never looked back.

I think once I got pregnant with DD I would have struggled to get him in and out of the cot, but he was 2.6 by then.

DS1 stayed in his cot until he was three. And then, we only moved him out because his brother needed the cot. He never climbed out.

Now he's in a bed, we do struggle a bit with him getting out, but we've got a nightlight on a timer, that tells him when he's allowed up.

DS2 will stay in the cot until he can climb out, I think. He's only 15 months now, so it will be some time.

My ds's were in a cot until about 2.5-3yrs and the dd's had a cotbed which they were in until about 4yo. I agree with the 'if it ain't broke...' sentiment!

i turned ds cot into a bed (with a tomy rail) at 13 months old...once he could walk..i done this because i live in a bedsit and we seriously needed to free up some space...and because he was being little bugger when i tried to get him out...(im a small person!) so it was killing me trying to get him out.....
but, he took to it really well...after 1 week of constant putting back into bed at night...he got the idea and has been an angel at night ever since.....(its the mornings that get ya!)

My DS2 stayed in a big travel cot until we moved house when he was a week off 3 - he shared a bedroom with DS1 in our old flat so there was no room for a second bed and when we moved they got bunk beds. The plan had been to move sooner than we did!

Interesting thread DD (nearly 18 mo) is still in her cotbed, however, I'm a week away from having no2 and was wondering if I could get away with getting DD1 a bed when DD2 needs a cot. Don't think I will though.

Dd's 3 and 3 months and still in a fairly small cot, not a cot bed or I'd take the sides off. Up until about 2 weeks ago she's been very reluctant to even think about the idea of having a bed she likes her 'cosy little cot' and she's not a terribly big child so has enough room. But she has started now to talk about having a 'real bed.' So we're going to get one in the next couple of weeks. She sleeps in a normal sized single bed when we stay at my mum's and is fine with eht transition between one and the other.

I had to put dts into beds when they started somersaulting out of their cots at 17months.

My dts were fine going into beds at 17 months, I put tiny chairs next to the bed to help them get in and out themselves.
