How old was your child when they moved from cot to bed? How long can I get away with it!?

DD is now 2.7 and still happily in a big cotbed. She sleeps no problem until 8 in the morning, and then stays in her cot and I can hear her playing and singing.

She's the only one of her peer group in a cot still, but I just think if it 'aint broke don't fix it .... oh and I'm not really a morning person, so she's contained until I'm ready to get up [selfish moment]!

Is there any reason why I should think about getting a bed for her?

dd went straight from her cot into a bunk bed (bottom bed, obviously!). She was just over three, and had been climbing out of her cot for ages. It really didn't make any difference at all, a very smooth transition. We didn't have any great reason for keeping her in the cot so long, I just took ages choosing their new beds!

Bozza · 03/01/2006 16:46

Yes Elliott thats what decided us to move DS at 2.3 - because he had to go in a bed on holiday - too heavy for travel cot by then. But looking back I think he could have gone back in his cot.

nooka · 03/01/2006 16:47

Oh, and she was nappy free for quite a while in the cot, and I think we only had one accident. But then she's not much of a night "pee-er".

iota · 03/01/2006 16:49

both of my ds's were climbing out of their cots well before they were 2, so they went into beds for safey reasons.

ds2 used to climb in and out of his travel cot as well, but since that wes lower down and less hazardous to his health, we used it for much longer

Enid · 03/01/2006 16:52

dd2 was almost 3 and asked for a bed

if she hadn't she would have stayed in her cot. it was lovely in there, blankets, pillows, toys. Like a nest.

snowydelight · 03/01/2006 17:26

DD (3 in February) only went into a bed about a month ago. She's tall and the cot was beginning to look a bit small, otherwise she would have stayed in the cot until she showed an inclination to climb out. Unless you have a particular reason to move them, what's wrong with staying in a cot?

trinityrocks · 03/01/2006 17:45

We only put dd1 into her bed on the first night in the new house cos we couldn't find the bolts for the cot!!!!!
They must have got lost in the move.
She was 2.8
She loved her cot and I was of the opinion that if it aint broke don't fix it! She never had tried to climb out so I saw no problem.

4blue1pink · 03/01/2006 17:51

My 4th child still in cot he is 3 in 3 weeks and i am in no hurry - only when i train him at night..loads of his friends went in a year ago and it has just caused grief...why rush!~

CelluliteQueen · 03/01/2006 18:52

DS is 2.6 and still Grobagged and in his cot. He sleeps from 8pm until 9am so I am another believer in why mend it if it ain't broken? I intend to leave his in his cot for as long as possible!

going4potty · 03/01/2006 18:59

Hi, my ds is 3.2 in gro bag and junior bed, so can get out and shuffle, but you can hear him if he does, also sleeps fairly ok once settled (nightmare) so i dont want to change it

jambuttie · 03/01/2006 19:20

ds1 was 2.5 when moved from cot to bed

twins were 15 months when we moved them

Piffle · 03/01/2006 19:24

my dd went into a bed at 25 mths, mainly as she was hitting the cot sides and it was waking her up
She has never once got out of her bed on her own - she still lies in and sings happily until I get her and she is now 3 yrs 3 mths.

Frostythesurfmum · 03/01/2006 20:07

All good stuff I'm hearing! She only climbed out once about a year ago and had such a fall that she's never done it since, and as for the night time potty training, I was going to wait until she's a bit older (not sure when but another day, another thread).

My morning lie-in appears safe!

I haven't read all the replies Frostysurfermum but I would agree with you in the 'if it ain't broke' approach.
We put DS is a bed at just 2 as he learned how to climb out of his cot and I always regretted it (we should have got a bigger cot!). His sleep was bad enough anyway and we had years of broken nights (he is 6 now and has only slept well for the last 6 months!!!!!!!)
DD will be 2 next month and she is in one of those big american size cots and she will stay in it until she leaves home

mummyhill · 03/01/2006 20:53

DD went into a bed at 2 as she had started trying to climb out of the cot otherwise I would of left her init till she didn't fit any more. Luckily she handled the transition well. To preserve my lie in and because we couldn't get a gate to fit the top of the stairs we put a gate on her bedroom door.

annobal · 03/01/2006 21:17

DS is 28 months and still in a cot happily (although he now gets out of his grobag!!). I do, however, have a horror story...a friend has a dd 2 months younger than my ds who climbed out of her cot and broke her arm, poor thing. When she went to the hospital, the dr said that they should be moved out at 18 months!! This hasn't made me change tho as ds is very happy in his cot (and we don't have room at the moment for a bed).

Wills · 03/01/2006 21:20

We've just moved out 2 year out into her bed (28 months) and, bless her, she didn't want to leave it. We've done it because we're moving to a rental house for 7 months and wanted to pack up the loft and not take things that we wouldn't need for the full 7 months. We weren't sure she'd still fit the cot in 7 months. Also being pregnant its getting hard to lift her out! Otherwise I'd have left her there, she was happy so why rock the boat.

Wills · 03/01/2006 21:22

Ghosty - have just read your thread. I'm with you on that one! DD2 still doesn't sleep through the night and now she's out of the cot we can no longer ignore her as she comes into the room and stands beside one of us screaming until we take notice. We have tried hiding under the covers!!!!

dollybird · 03/01/2006 21:52

Both DS and DD were in beds before two - DS because his cot was my younger brothers (in it till three) and my mum and dad got it second had 19 years ago!!. DD came out as she was in the travel cot and getting too big for it. DS never got out of bed for at least a year and even now, only gets up in the morning, not during the night. DD has got up in the night but was taken straight back to bed, so she's given up on that - just gets up in the morning now. I agree there's nothing wrong with staying in a cot as long as possible, but I figured if they didn't learn to climb out of a cot they wouldn't think it was alright to get out of bed!! DH told each of them very sternly about 100 times 'you do not get out of bed' before they first went in it - think it out the fear of god in them!!

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 03/01/2006 21:56

Jessi (17 months) has been sleeping in a toddler bed at my dad's over xmas and new year, and spent one night in the cot last night when we got home, her toddler bed for home arrived today, and she is snug as a bug upstairs right now. She loves it, i love it - but ask me again in the morning to see if she goes awandering or not!

notasheep · 03/01/2006 22:45

dd was in a cot until she almost started school!

We put her into adult bed once she was too tall for cot,and by that age she was able to stay in bed and not fall out!

chipkid · 03/01/2006 22:50

ds was just 3 and i only moved him then because I needed to prepare for the arrival of dd. I would leave your dd where she is. She sounds like she's doing great

laundrylover · 03/01/2006 22:55

Put Tilly down in her new little bed this evening (22 months)and so far so good....we are keeping her in her grobag for the time being though.
Reasons for the move were - me preggers and can't lift very well, wanted to put the cot away for a while and also she wakes us up scratching her excema and banging the cot.
I'm with you JandRMummy - let's see how our first night goes!!

Mandy03 · 04/01/2006 00:38

Frostythesurfmum, my ds was still in a cot until... wait for it.... 4 years old!! It might sound awful but he never ever tried to climb out and still seemed very comfortable in it, so we left him until the very last moment.

I, like you, am not really a morning person and while it was still working ok I thought I'd leave him be. Eventually when he got physically too big, we moved him into a bed. It's been wonderful in the sense that even now (at 5 1/2) he goes straight to bed and doesn't get out until the morning, & we've never had him wandering around the house or getting out of bed continually at night. I do think there are some benefits to waiting a bit longer before switching to a bed. I wouldn't worry about it just yet.

eidsvold · 04/01/2006 05:08

dd1 went into a cot before two - simply because we had moved to Australia - was being loaned the baby things for dd2 and so put dd1 in a bed a couple of months short of her second birthday. Had we still lived in the UK - she was still doing fine in her cot - she would have been still been in her cot when dd2 was born as dd2 would have been in the moses basket for a few months.... so probably three I guess.
