Are you Mum or Mummy?

Just curious.

DS1 is nearly 6, and some of his friends say "Mum" while some still say "Mummy". I'm still Mummy, and I have to confess I prefer it. Clinging to the early years I suppose!

So I was wondering, what age to children tend to switch? I imagine it makes a difference if there are older siblings around. No doubt DS2 will call me Mum as soon as DS1 does.

my son is only 2 yet he sometimes calls me mummy, preferably when he wants a drink... yet believe it or not he calls me mumma, and even mumma. its a thing that kids never grow out of. i still sometimes call my mum mummy, yet im 20 years old!

My son is 8 now and it's "Mummy" when he wants something Grin otherwise it's plain old "Mum".

DTs are 7.

More often than not mummy when they are talking to me. Very often mum when talking about me, especially to their friends.

They still love to snuggle with me and think I'm the bees knees. When that stops I'll be very Sad.

I was always a mummy. However, at the school gate I am always 'mum'.
I am usually 'mummy' when they want something and they are being unusually nice to me

swings back and forth. Was always Mummy until my dd read a book full of "Mum" and "Dad". So she adopted Mum, now it is sometimes one, sometimes the other.

We were never allowed to call my mother 'mum' as she didn't like it, and (probably as a result) I don't like it either! If they call me 'mum' I won't be answering, though it hasn't come up yet. DD knows my name, as well as DH's nicknames for me and sometimes calls me by one of them, as well as mummy.

Mummy still for me - 2 boys, age 7 and 5. No signs of intentions to change the status quo, even in public.

I'm mum. I don't mind but one of my friends hates it. She still calls her mum mummy at 36 Smile

Mama by both, makes by heart melt when said by DS (he's 4 but no doubt this will change when he goes to school next year & he'll start calling me ho' or somesuch).

The 8 year old calls me mum in public but he calles me mummy at home

Neither,,,,,,,,,Smile I am a Mumma and proud of it! Wilf didnt actually call me anything till he was six[he's deaf] then he used to try and say Mumma and it came out as Bugger!!!! Grin Grin Grin

I'm not MissBetsyTrotwoods friends but I still say "Mummy" at 36:) However I am Irish and I think "mum" is more of an English expression. I also use "Mother" too. My DH, also Irish, says "Ma". My DS is being raised in London and calls me "Mummy" but he's only 2 so hopefully will stick with it for a while. Not keen on "Mum" but then again can't imagine a bracing hulk of a teenager calling me "mummy".

I get mama, mummy and mum from my pre-schoolers.

Al depends on how grovelling / whingy they are.

AS DS calls me Daddy most of the time I'd happily settle for Mum or Mummy!!

DS is 4 and calls me Mam and Mammy. Depends on the circumstances I think. DD is too young to call me anything yet.

As an ex-pat north easterner living 'darn sawf' I'm quietly a bit devastated that now he's at school, the odd 'Mum' is appearing in his language. I wonder if I'm 'Mum' at school and 'Mam' at home. Possibly.

I'm Mummy or Mama to DS1 (5.6) most of the time - occasionally Mum, especially since he started school and reading the Biff and Chip and Kipper books which use 'Mum' and 'Dad'.
I'm (currently) Muuuuuuuuum to DS2 (3.6) who is going through a dreadful whiny phase.
DS3 is only 0.5, so nothing yet from him Smile.

DS is 3.8 and has just started calling us "Mum" and "Dad" rather than "Mummy" and "Daddy"....most of the time anyway, when he's whinging it's "Mummeeeeee" and when he's cries it's "Mumma"

DD 10 calls me mum most of the time, DS8 still calls me mummy all the time, DS7 swaps between the 2 and DD4 (who spent 2 years in the USA) calls me mommy or momma.

Must say though that when we are out or with friends all of them will call me mummy and if they wish to get my attention before I answer them will say "excuses me ma'am" and if I ask them to do something it is "yes ma'am" all throw backs from 2 years in the southern part of the USA
