Are you Mum or Mummy?

Just curious.

DS1 is nearly 6, and some of his friends say "Mum" while some still say "Mummy". I'm still Mummy, and I have to confess I prefer it. Clinging to the early years I suppose!

So I was wondering, what age to children tend to switch? I imagine it makes a difference if there are older siblings around. No doubt DS2 will call me Mum as soon as DS1 does.

DD (age 12) calls me Mummy when we're alone and just grunts when her friends are around. When she was little she called me by my first name! Daddy has always been Daddy regardless.

I loathe and detest being called Mum, thankfully Ds (2.10) has only tried it a few times so far (which I ignored).

I don't mind Mummy, Mama, my actual name or anything else really.

Not sure what they'll settle on when they're older but it won't be Mum.

Neither. My kids call me by my name.

PhylisStein · 01/08/2011 20:53

DTSs age 8 and DD age 5 call me 'Mummy.'

But I am pretty posh, so I still call my mummy 'Mummy' and I am 38! Wink

Dd1 calls me mummy, dd2 calls me daddy. Lol.

I can clearly remember the day when I had to phone home (about something trivial) as secondary school, must have been in yr8, and my stepdad answered and I said "is mummy there", can still remember the look on my year-head's face. Have called her mother ever since. (she doesn't like mum).

They all started to call me mum at about 7 or 8 I think

DD started to call me mum at four years old. I was quite surprised when she first said it. She is five now and still uses both mum and mummy.

soymama · 01/08/2011 21:50

We are 'mami' and 'papi'.

Iamkenny · 01/08/2011 21:52

DD (4) I'm Mam/Mammy - it changes. Same for my DH Dad/Daddy
DS (2) Mama but if we are talking to him we call me Mammy and DH is Dadddy (so not far :( ) most of the time but he still uses Dada

munstersmum · 01/08/2011 21:52

Ds age6 last week when clearly feeling a little exasperated "Oh my word mother" GrinGrin What are they teaching them in school?
Otherwise tends to be Mum now unless a snuggly moment.

saltyseadog · 01/08/2011 21:54

I'm mama.

JoInScotland · 01/08/2011 22:04

We are Mama and Dada. Our son is 18 months old. I'm originally from the US and just can't get my head around "Mummy" which I think belongs in a museum. However, we were out today watching the diggers at the playground, moving sand around, and he sort of absent-mindedly said, "Mum. Dad" I have no idea what was going through is little head.

DS (8) says mummy to me, even if others are there, but will talk about "my mum" to others.

It will become "mum" I'm sure. I'd rather it didn't - would prefer mam, mamma, mummy, mumma but my mother insisted on "mummy" and as I was a very compliant child and teenager I complied until I left home. I hate it, it feels all wrong, but I can't shake the habit now.

My brother dealt with the problem by calling her nothing at all for years. Literally. Now aged 29 he occasionally says "mam" which she hates more. Makes me laugh!

So once DS moves to mum, I'll accept it. Either way it's better than some of the more charming insults he throws at me on occasion!
