Has your child stayed in their birth percentile?

I had 4 big babies, the smallest was 10lbs 5 oz, the biggest 11lbs 10 ozs.

My eldest was 10lbs 7 oz and a 9 is still very tall but is very skinny, my second was my smallest and she's average height and you can tell she's going to be curvier than her older sister.
The last two are slightly tall for their ages and on the chunky side but you wouldn't look at them and think they'd been big babies.
Does anyone have a big baby that grew into a big child or conversely a small baby who has remained on the small side?

Nope. DS born smack on time and was 50th percentile. Shot up to 91st (EBF) within 6 weeks and stayed there. He's 17 months now and still 91st. Had him weighed for 1st time in months last week.

The size of the baby before birth and at birth is largely dependent on the environment in utero. So obv it was nice inside your body.

The height a child will reach as an adult is dependent on the heights of the parents - it doesn't bear any relation to the birth weight etc.

Both my babies were small, I was very ill when pregnant and both had to be born early. A few years on, DD is very tall and well built, a giant child really and DS is also very tall (although skinny). That's because me and DH are tall, so just genetics really.

JemimaMuddledUp · 23/07/2011 11:57

My 3 DC were 8lb 9, 8 lb 10 and 6lb 7.

DS1 who was 8lb 9 is almost 9, average height for his age but skinny and his weight is around the 25th percentile.

DS2 who was 8lb 10 is 7. He is short for his age and his weight is in proportion (about 25th percentile for both).

DD who was 6lb 7 is 5 and still small, she is around the 25th percentile for height and the 2nd percentile for weight.

mymumdom · 23/07/2011 12:09

Greycircles, I understand this but I have so many people remark on how 'normal' my children seem and that you'd never guess they had been such big babies. DH and I are quite tall and neither of us are skinny, so there is obviously the potential for them to be tall/big genetically as well.

I was just interested on what happened with other children as they grew.

Grey's right, birth weight doesn't have much to do with eventual adult height or weight. FWIW ds was 8lb 6oz and long, has stayed on the large side (people always think he's a year or two older than he is) but dh is 6ft and I'm taller than average for a woman. Physically he's a clone of dh, tall and full of muscle.

ragged · 23/07/2011 12:16

Gawd No. All over the place (now age 3-11).

Eg., two boys born 6.5lb & 8lb11oz are just about on the same growth curve from I can tell:
Born whatever
Noticeably "petit" as toddlers and into early school yrs
Average build & height by end of primary
Probably end up taller than average with broad shoulders (both me & DH are built like that).

issynoko · 23/07/2011 12:17

No idea.

suzikettles · 23/07/2011 12:17

Ds was 50th centile when born and pretty much right up to when he was weaned. He then dropped down to just below the 25th for weight & height and has remained there ever since.

Dh is 5ft 8 and I'm 5ft 6 so he was never likely to be tall.

Conflugenglugen · 23/07/2011 12:42

Yes, my little'un was between the 0.4th and 2nd percentile, and is still hovering in that region 4.5 years on.

Hulababy · 23/07/2011 12:52

DD - no, not in terms of height or weight. Height has gone from 9th to 75th.

DD is now 9y (and 3m) and is just above the 75th centile for height at 139cm. When born she was on the 9th centile. No idea regarding weight as we don't really weigh her these days but she is well within the right weight for her height ratios.

edam · 23/07/2011 13:27

suzi - 5'6" is relatively tall for a woman. So your dh may be short but you are not!

TransatlanticCityGirl · 23/07/2011 14:06

"The height a child will reach as an adult is dependent on the heights of the parents - it doesn't bear any relation to the birth weight etc."

Genetics plays an important role (and sets the foundation for maximum adult height), however nutrition and illness also play roles as well. Most of that influence takes place after birth but good nutrition and health in pregnancy can and does have an impact.

A big baby doesn't necessarily equal a tall or big child. However children of tall parents tend to be larger as babies.

Their percentile can and will change as a result of their environment and genetics after birth. It is not fixed.

TheHappyCamper · 23/07/2011 14:17

Not here!

DD was 98th C at birth for height and weight, but very quickly dropped to 65th where she has stayed for 2 years.

DH is tall but I am average - I think she'll be somewhere in between. Certainly not the 6 foot teenager the HV predicted at 2 weeks old lol! Grin

I think the reason she was so big at birth was being overdue, placenta was working well, I wasn't too sick, ate well etc.

Bunbaker · 23/07/2011 14:25

Pretty much, yes. DD was very small when she was born and crept up to the 2nd centile. She moved to the 9th and reached the dizzy heights of the 25th when she was three. She has shot up heightwise and measured on the 3rd centile at school a few weeks ago in year 6. Buying trousers for her is a nightmare as they are always too short and too big on the waist.

ggirl · 23/07/2011 14:33

had an average ds on 50th percentile
now he's on 25th i think

dd same

PennyWarrender · 23/07/2011 14:44

DS1 was so long at the 6 week check he was over the 100th percentile, and the Doctor said he would be 6'6" !!

By about 1 year old he was down to the 95th centile for height, 90th by the time he was two etc. Now he is 11 he is only on the 75th. An online predictor put his adult height at 6'1" which is actually what I thought he might be. DH and I are only average height. (My niece is nearly 6' tall to two average height parents so I think there is a tall gene lurking hidden somewhere.)

edam · 23/07/2011 14:46

Over the 100th percentile is quite impressive - clearly whoever compiled the charts hadn't realised babies could be quite so long!

PennyWarrender · 23/07/2011 14:54

haha! yes when I told DH what the Dr had said, he said "Oh no! When he's grown up, we'll look like Del Boy and Rodney walking down the street."

DS was born on the 9th centile and has pretty much stayed there. He's on the short side as well, not sure if he's due a growth spurt or not but he's currently being overtaken by other children who are a few months younger than him (he's 3.7). He doesn't look fragile though, just small.

Llanarth · 23/07/2011 17:28

DS aged 3.5 was born on the 99th percentile for both height and weight and has remained there ever since.

rabbitstew · 23/07/2011 19:06

Ds1, just over 9th centile in weight when born (but long and thin) - still long and thin, but well over 91st centile in height, and has been for the last few years. Ds2, 50th centile when born, now 25th centile in both height and weight (and has been for two or three years, now), but also quite thin, just very muscular (completely different body type to ds1, who is lacking in any muscle!!!). I expect ds2 will have a growth spurt at some point, whereas ds1 wouldn't stop growing until he was very tall for his age and is now staying on the tall-person curve. It runs in the family to have small, neat babies that end up tall.

bigTillyMint · 23/07/2011 19:17

DD was about 9th percentile for weight and height at birth. By 1 year she was just above the 50th for both and is still there at 12.

DS was just also above the 9th percentile for both at birth, moving to the 50th for both at 1 and is now on the 91st for both at 10 1/2!

TuttoRhino · 23/07/2011 20:57

Nope. Born on 98th for weight and the 75th for height and stayed round about there for first 9 months. Then she started sliding down the scale - didn't gain any weight between 9 to 18 months. She's now 26 months and on roughly the 40th centile for weight & height.

She was a huge EBF baby who wanted milk all the time. Now that she's a bit older she's clearly taking after my side of the family, who were all relatively petite as children but wound up being 5'8 (me) and 6'1 and 6'3 (brothers).

sleeplessinderbyshire · 23/07/2011 21:00

DD born just above 2nd centile now aged 23 months and every time she is weighed (not often these days) she seems to have read the book as she follows that line totally exactly each time
