We call DS's privates 'willy' but I don't know what to call DD's!! Vagina just seems a bit clinical.
Suggestions for nicer terms gratefully received! I can't think of any.

Fear of the name only increases fear of the thing itself.

I find the shuddering and pursing of lips around words like vulva and labia rather amusing.

I always took the line that dd needed to know what bits of her anatomy were called using a word that we all shared. So no twinkles and noo noos and other twee terms that seem to denote some feigned girly coquettishness. People are almost shamed by using the correct words for things. And for the part of anatomy that denotes our gender no less. It's a bit ridiculous. But then we also like to use the same terms in vulgar and perjorative ways.

I agree with Basingstoke. I had a v interesting conversation with my then 7 year old when she told me her 9 year old friend said you peed out of your vagina. I am shocked that adult women think it appropriate to imply this to young girls. I then had to explain about the third hole where babies come out lest she start believing you pooh them out. It is only now I am pregnant she sort of believes that there may in fact be a third hole as obviously older playground friends know much more than your mother.

We refer to your front bottom as girly bits but I am happy to be enlightened of a more technically correct term.

SleepySuzy · 16/07/2011 21:45

My DD calls hers a tuppence. DP and I call mine a flujab Smile

NorksAreMessy · 16/07/2011 21:48

When I was recovering from my first miscarriage, my DOCTOR said, 'don't worry, I won't be footling with your floozie today' and 'floozie' it has remained ever since.

MummysTooTightToMention · 16/07/2011 22:04

Unfortunately not.

culturemulcher · 16/07/2011 22:30

That's lucky, mummy. But mine fossa was furrier than your fossa Grin

what do you call DD's private parts?
....Forbidden on pain of death!Grin

Beccabop · 17/07/2011 00:26

Its your fairy or your fan Grin

Lovely gentle terminology, Ive always thought :)

MrsBonkers · 17/07/2011 00:55

Not had to deal with this yet as my DD is only 1, but what do you all think of telling her its her fanjo???

hophophippidtyhop · 17/07/2011 07:52

Fanny, I see it as the female equivilant of willy. It was foo foo for a while, and yes, it was funny the day dd came home singing "little rabbit foo foo, riding through the forest..." dd laughs when my mum calls it her dinky doo.

rainbowinthesky · 17/07/2011 08:05

vulva

JackiePaper · 17/07/2011 08:15

DD is 4 and it's her lulu, she does know she has a vagina and a womb, and ds knows he has a penis and testicles, but on a day to day basis it's a lulu and a willy.

seeker · 17/07/2011 13:58

Why on earth do you all talk about them so much!?

MerryMarigold · 17/07/2011 14:37

Don't refer to them a lot. Mostly in the context of:

  • Make sure you wash your willy and bum/ foof and bum (reminder required on daily basis Grin)
  • My foof's a bit itchy mummy (rarer, but she does suffer from this, poor little lass)
seeker · 17/07/2011 15:08

Ah, I would use "bottom" in the first scenario, and probably would have expected dd to say either "bottom" or "vulva" in the second.

musttidyupmusttidyup · 17/07/2011 15:17

Suzy! We use tuppy - comes from tuppence. My mum's family said boys have penny h'penny and giurls have tuppence hence tuppy. My SIL laughs at me but its nice to not have a word that means something else. Lot of friends use mini Shock which i think odd! Agree with vagina being strange choice as means 'inside bit' and not nice word imo.
So glad having this discussion as didn't really know what to use so went with what my mum used.
BTW WTF is a fossa? Grin

musttidyupmusttidyup · 17/07/2011 15:20

looked at link Grin

MerryMarigold · 17/07/2011 22:11

seeker, if I said 'bottom' then they would duly wash their bottoms. But I can't bring myself to use 'front bottom' or 'vulva' or 'penis' or 'privates'.

Bigglewinkle · 18/07/2011 09:15

Blimey! Who knew it was so contentious and Blush at using wrong medical term...
Will do some biology revision before getting technical... And in the meantime probably use fanny

OP posts:
BonzoDooDah · 19/07/2011 12:00

Hee hee - not contentious but a valid point. People don't argue about what to call their child's elbow or chin for example.

Loving "Fanny House" and vulva la revolution Grin

And I am a bit disturbed by calling the genitals a vulva as this is the opening of the vagina. I don't particulatrly want my daughter referring to the individual "inside" bits as the sexual part alone. What you can see (the flaps) are labia and then inside are all sorts of things - clitoris, vulva, urtethral opening etc - so I'd say for a pre-pubescent girl the clinical term would be labia.

Or FANNY!!!! Grin

SleepySuzy · 19/07/2011 13:05

Never heard of penny h'penny! My sisters lads used to call theirs a winky, which was confusing as the called the tv remote a dinker!

DirtyMartini · 19/07/2011 15:32

Are you sure about that Bonzo? I don't think the vulva is just the vaginal opening, is it? It's a more inclusive term encompassing all the various anatomical bits (sorry, "bits"-haters), I thought?

Wikipedia (I know, it is not exactly the OED; but just as a common quick reference ...) says:

"The vulva has many major and minor anatomical structures, including the labia majora, mons pubis, labia minora, clitoris, bulb of vestibule, vulval vestibule, greater and lesser vestibular glands, and the opening of the vagina."

BonzoDooDah · 19/07/2011 17:30

Ah Dirty you'll be right then - I was wrong about that. Thought I knew my anatomy Blush

Brillbryant · 19/07/2011 21:29

My dd Has a 'fluff' and my ds has a 'woo woo'. There was absolutley no intention of keeping these names but they make us laugh so much it's kind of stuck. The 'woo woo' was picked up from another family while we were camping. Used the showers and heard a mum telling her ds to wash his 'woo woo'. We were in hysterics and just carried this on till this day. In all seriousness though, they know the correct terms and how the body functions. My children chose these names and we're all comfatable with these.
