Did yours suck their thumb as you didn't give dummy? Toying with dummy idea a s don't want ds to be a thumb sucker...could dummy use prevent it?

hoxtonchick · 27/11/2005 20:55

ds didn't need either, dd had her thumb and would never take a dummy even when I half heartedly tried.

my boy was a mouth breather... [mouth always hanging open..ripe for comments from all and sundry]...so no dummy or thumb ever really gave him comfort/ pleasure..though he'd try bless him

tamum · 27/11/2005 20:57

Hi HC I know what you mean, actually, better than 24 hour breastfeeding now I come to think of it...

(sorry for hijack- have you decided any more about moving yet?)

LilacBump · 27/11/2005 20:57

DD didn't suck thumbs or dummies. never wanted/needed them.

Chandra · 27/11/2005 20:58

No, he removed one of the socks from his feet and sucked that instead.

No, DS didn't have a dummy and he doesn;t suck his thumb (he's 20 months).

Frayedknot · 27/11/2005 20:58

BTW I think he used my boobs instead.

collision · 27/11/2005 20:59

Same here! No dummies or thumbs!

DNephew is 3 and has 5 dummies all at the same time. DS1 who is 3 looks bewildered by it whenever he sees him!

hoxtonchick · 27/11/2005 20:59

absolutely, tamum, she only feeds for 10 minutes at a time!

no further decisions about moving. dp still v. v. miserable at work, we're focussing on that at the moment. but i still want to move....

sorry for the hijack bm!

MaryP0p1 · 27/11/2005 20:59

I was a thumb sucker (till 13) I gave my children dummies because they kept sucking their fingers early on and preferred to be able to decide when to take away the comforter. Not an option with thumbs.

Nemo1977 · 27/11/2005 21:02

Hi
DS had a dummy until he was 3mths when he gave it up himself. He was never a thumb sucker either, think it just depends on the tot and what they seek comfort from.

Shazzler · 27/11/2005 21:04

I have 2 and neither had dummies or sucked their thumbs, apart from dd when she was just born, seemed to be sucking for Britain, what a noise .

WigWamBam · 27/11/2005 21:05

My dd didn't have a dummy and has never sucked her thumb - although I do have a scan picture of her with her thumb in her mouth before she was born!

paolosgirl · 27/11/2005 21:05

Neither of mine had a dummy, nor did they suck their thumbs.

Mytwopenceworth · 27/11/2005 21:14

My 2 both had dummies but gave them up - we did them both together, the first few nights were hard, but they have forgotten what a dummy is!!!

However.

I had a dummy when I was a kid and I had it taken away - the habit of sucking was so so hard to break that I am still a thumb sucker at the age of 32. I can't sleep without my thumb in my mouth, but I manage to stop myself during the day - unless preoccupied and my thumb creeps in without my noticing!

My teeth have been pushed forward - although I don't know for certain it's the thumb sucking the fact that I wake up every morning with blood on my thumb can't be a good sign!

So the only advice I can give is make sure the child, if they have a dummy, is truly ready and happy to give it up. If it's just a habit you can break it, but if it's a comforter, they may very well look for a replacement somewhere close at hand!

mummytosteven · 27/11/2005 21:16

It did with DS, but he seems to have given up thumb sucking now at 20 months.

MaryP0p1 · 27/11/2005 21:17

We waiting till all their teeth were through and then restricted it to nighttime and then took it away in the middle of the night and the dummy fairy came and left a present.

tillykins · 27/11/2005 21:23

mine is a thumbsucker - no dummy.
He uses it to get to sleep or if he is upset but will happily take it out when asked to

I think its easier than a dummy but I do think you need to be conscious of not letting them talk with the thumb in!

Mercy · 27/11/2005 21:27

ButtonMoon in answer to your q.

dd had a dummy till 4 months (I removed it) A week later discovered her thumb and still sucks at over 4 yrs. I probably intervened too soon, still don't know why I did.

ds had a dummy until he was about 8 weeks and then rejected it. Has never sucked his thumb.

Sorry not much help really!

Lizita · 27/11/2005 21:31

No dummy, no thumb sucking! I fully expected her to (suck her thumb) as i did for years myself! But she was breast fed on demand (and often, more than she needed in terms of milk i reckon!) so I think perhaps she got most of her sucking whatsit from that...
