Did yours suck their thumb as you didn't give dummy? Toying with dummy idea a s don't want ds to be a thumb sucker...could dummy use prevent it?

No dummy, doesn't suck his thumb.

His fingers now...yep But so did I, till I was about eight and no teeth problems so am not convinced there's a link. Think it can be to do with hereditary thingys too.

He's 19mo now and does it less than he did - I don't mention it - except this morning I asked if he could suck his other fingers and he solemnly took out the two he was sucking and replaced them with the same fingers on the opposite hand and resumed sucking

My dd wouldn't use a dummy and has now found her thumb. I was a thumb sucker too until about 7 or 8 I think. It didn't give me any dental problems. I still sleep with my hand by my mouth (which I have only realised recently might be related to the thumbsucking .

Neither of mine had a dummy, either thumb suck. DS is severely autistic and was a nightmare baby but I still believe it was better to deal with whatever behaviour there was than try to avoid it, it wouldn't have done me any good in the long term.

SenoraPostrophe · 27/11/2005 22:15

dd had a dummy and sucks her thumb still. ds refused his from 6 weeks and has never sucked his thumb. they're either suckers or they aren't imo.

Serah · 27/11/2005 23:09

Ah, not necessarily thumbs..... mine has recently found his index finger!

Davros · 27/11/2005 23:23

God, I wondered what you were going to say Serah I agree, they do tend to be suckers or not.

my 13 mths old DD never had a dummy and shes not sucking her thumb either.. but its so funny when the first time she ever saw a dummy in a girls mouth and she was in awe prob thinking "what is that??" and another time after that in the playgroup i saw her nicking a dummy off another baba and she putted it in her own mouth - EEK!

piffle · 27/11/2005 23:32

My ds never had a dummy and he has never sucked his thumb
DD had a dummy very early on for help controlling her reflux (was thumb sucker in the womb) took dummy off at 4 mths adn she has had thumb ever since.
If it makes any difference, ds's dad was not thumbsucker but I was (when kids obv)
with dd her dad and I were both thumbsuckers!

superblastofflips · 27/11/2005 23:36

i never had a dummy either (cos mum didnt like them) and nor DP had one too. (i did give my DD a dummy for a week when she was forst born and she hated it as i stopped giving it to her and she was happier)

handlemecarefully · 28/11/2005 01:00

Mine haven't had dummies or sucked thumbs either.

Kittypickle · 28/11/2005 07:59

I agree with SenoraPostrophe. DD was not a sucky baby at all and didn't have either. DS however is completely different. I did give him a dummy when he was very little but he gave up on that and found his thumb, which I think he will be a nightmare trying to stop.

Bomper · 28/11/2005 10:35

My ds and dd1 both had dummies and gave them up around 2 and a half, dd2 would not have a dummy at all and is now a thumb sucker. Although I agree that it is much easier to stop a dummy habit than a thumb, I have realised that with ds and dd1 I was using the dummy as a 'plug' a lot of them time, and they could have probably done without it for the majority of the time, whereas you can't put a thumb in a mouth, and dd2 only thumb sucks when she is tired.

vkone · 28/11/2005 14:44

DS wouldn't take to dummy and hasn't sucked anything else yet, but he is a major hair twiddler as am I
