I was probably a bit grim when younger too, but it was just normal down our way - I'm sure loads of other girls were the same at the time!!! (I'm 38 and brought up in a Yorkshire village, where we didn't like too much water wasted or namby pambyness!!!! he he he!!!).
I'd say till about the age of 10 or 11, I had a bath once a week, whether I needed it or not. I often used to just eat the toothpaste rather than clean my teeth properly, I'm amazed my teeth are OK. And I tried my very best not to get wet in the showers at school games lessons (mind you, considering how little I exerted myself in games lessons, this probably didn't matter). I remember they had a little weird shower just for your feet, and thinking "that'll be enough for me"!
But then our bathroom and my bedroom were single glazed for ages and I remember jumping out of bed to warm up my clothes on the newly-turned-on radiator, then getting dressed as fast as possible before I froze in winter, so stripping off for a wash was a bit discouraging.
Once periods / greasy hair / spots and all that nastiness started, I was showering all the time, frying my hair with the hairdryer etc. My mum used to have a right go about the money spent on shampoo, conditioner & shower gel. I used to clean my teeth at break when I was at school too. I suppose once I became interested in boys that helped too, because obviously I didn't want them to think I was smelly (in hindsight the last thing the teenage boys seemed to care about was a smell - I'm sure they never showered a lot of the time, just sprayed on whatever the pre-historic equivalent of Lynx was).
Hopefully desire / necessity to keep clean will eventually prevail!
