Help! - We have constant rows in our house about taking showers, refusing to wash, washing hair brushing teeth etc etc.. Today was the last straw - dentist told her off for not brushing properly. Where am I going wrong - why is she refusing to wash ? She has not started her periods yet and I am very open about what will happen and that it is / will be very unhygeinic if she doesn't wash and she will smell - but still no use. I think I am more surprised as she is a girl, and I would expect her to want her to wash more... any ideas or has anyone else had this problem? I am sick of having to tell her to be clean...

Re the above - sorry for the long post, and I'm not knocking yorkshire, but most of the adults I knew only had one bath a week for ages too! My friend's dad bathed in fairy liquid - it was definitely not a cosmetically aware village!

DD (11) is much the same. I have to force the issue and just tell her that every 2nd or 3rd night at the moment she IS having a bath or shower. Shower is a disaster if I'm not careful though as she seems to be in and out again within about 15 seconds and I'm easily distracted by putting two small boys to bed. So baths are better, but still, if she called the shots they would frankly NEVER happen. Bleurgh! I am - on this rare occasion - rather hoping that peer pressure brings about a much needed change in her attitude to being clean... Roll on secondary school in September...!

wow i'm glad i'm not alone! my dd 9 hates showering or bathing i threaten her if she doesnt i will giver her bath! and scrub her! WHICH USUALLY WORKS as i take very long by purpose so next time its just matter of threat!

Hi, I am just reading your posting from 2011, I am now there and I assume that you are passed it.
How did you ride the waves. How long did it last? Any advise for a mum who watches her child 'suffer' a shower once a week, wear the same clothes WEEKS on end and will NOT wear clothes unless they are screwed up in her particular way
Thank you
