What non-toys does your toddler love?

DS2 is (barely) a toddler, nearly 14 months. His favourite toys are:

  • the bidet: a sink at his height!
  • kitchen scrubbing up brushes
  • any big kitchen utensils
  • toothbrushes
  • dustpan and brush
  • mop

He took a scrubbing up brush on the school run the other day.

ds is rather taken with a saucepan lid right now.
but his great love in life is babywipes... keep him amused for hours! he took one to bed the other day

marthamoo · 17/11/2005 19:14

Pegs (he's almost 4 now, not really a toddler but the peg fascination has not waned).

misdee · 17/11/2005 19:14

what is it with babywipes? my kids all love them. i give one to dd3 when i am changing her bottom, as otherwise she wiggles about, dont use them on her bum much really tho, just for general cleaning, great for getting ink off fingers lol.

compo · 17/11/2005 19:14

remote control

JiminyCricket · 17/11/2005 19:15

Gravel (putting it into buckets/holes/flowerpots)
Curtain rings (putting on her fingers)

mckenzie · 17/11/2005 19:16

DD age 8 months spent about 20 mins today sitting on the floor with a plastic carrier bag that had a jumper in it. I've never seen her quite so content (except when she had a slice of DH's pizza on bonfire night!)

ps. obviously I was only letting her play with a plastic carrier bag as I was sitting right next to her

starlover · 17/11/2005 19:16

at this very moment Linus is playing with:
a little food pot
nail varnish
a bin

NotQuiteCockney · 17/11/2005 19:16

We don't use wipes much at all, but DS2 does love any sort of tissue or kitchen roll. He will wipe up lots of imaginary spills.

He'd like to get my glasses, but I never give him a chance.

also ds loves palying with the computer. He moves the mouse so it lights up and bashes the keyboard!!

NotQuiteCockney · 17/11/2005 19:17

They do like plastic bags, don't they! DS2 has grown out of that phase, but for ages, a good crinkly bag was an excellent toy ... other than the whole death risk thing.

serena also loves popping things into her bath, i had it filled up yesterday and was putting the other 2 in the big bath and washing their hair. she was crawling about, she put a flannel in, a nappi nippa, a leaflet and a bottle of shampoo. then tried to get in fully clothed.

handbags
money
make up

marthamoo · 17/11/2005 19:21

Crinkly plastic bags are ace - I always used to give mine a loaf of bread or a multi-pack of crisps to keep them happy going round the supermarket. Sandwiches would be very oddly shaped and you had to suck up the crisps through a straw but that's a small price to pay for a quiet baby in Tesco

hornbag · 17/11/2005 19:38

parsnips
the cat
remote control
tissues
the cat(again)
keys
contents of peoples bags
and......the cat

Arabica · 17/11/2005 19:40

DS used to love my purse (taking all the cards and receipts in and out) and an old ID card of DH's on a necklace. But his real favourite thing ever (and he still loves it) is...Blu-tak!

harpsichordcarrier · 17/11/2005 19:45

stones
pastry cutters
buckets
make up
books (grown up ones)
cheese graters

SeaShells · 17/11/2005 19:48

DD will not leave my lip balms alone, she is obsessed.

Also phones, or remote controls - pretends they are phones.

SeaShells · 17/11/2005 19:50

Yes and the pc, lost count of the amount of times people have had 'conversations' with her on msn, lol.

Oh, DS2 also likes adult books, ideally ones you can flick through.

Oh and he managed to climb into his baby bath, fully dressed, the other day. He looked very pleased with himself.

All of the above - mop, hoover, brush, phone, PC, sellotape, pegs.

Also -

tins, bottles and jars from kitchen cupboards. For stacking, transporting round kitchen, hiding in washing machine etc!

toilet brush

big person shoes

DH's namebadge for work - 2pc magnet thing

fridge magnets

Actually, anything that's not a toy has probably been 'played with' at some point! We went away to Cyprus for 7w this summer, with no toys really. Bought him a sit in car, but otherwise he just 'found' toys!

Serah · 17/11/2005 20:01

pmsl at this lot of oh so familiar things! Love the carrier bags being brilliant apart from the "risk of death". I tie the handles in a tight knot (no head sized gap) and tell him its a balloon - this makes me kind and mean all at the same time I believe )

loujay · 17/11/2005 20:08

This week my DD is obsessed with getting oxo cubes out of the tin and then putting them back in again!! She spent 45 minutes doing that on Tuesday

harpsichordcarrier · 17/11/2005 20:39

pegs! yes
last year I went to toysrus and bought some hideous playhouse for three million pounds
dd spent Christmas morning playing with potatoes, onions and tea towels
