What non-toys does your toddler love?

DS2 is (barely) a toddler, nearly 14 months. His favourite toys are:

  • the bidet: a sink at his height!
  • kitchen scrubbing up brushes
  • any big kitchen utensils
  • toothbrushes
  • dustpan and brush
  • mop

He took a scrubbing up brush on the school run the other day.

Which non-toys does your toddler love?

a celebrations tin lid for ds3
he goes around the house as if it was a steering wheel

NotQuiteCockney · 17/11/2005 20:46

I've mostly given up on buying new toys for DS2, while he's still too young to notice, IYSWIM. If he's not playing with a non-toy, it's a toy of DS1's (4 years). He loves C3PO more than a toddler should, I think.

Harpic toilet cleaner(!)
Toilet brush

A fish slice that he crawls round with
The remote control

In fact Im not buying him anymore toys as he doesnt want to play with them.

Today's obsession is the computer. He must have the keyboard and the mouse. Thankfully, we have two mice, so I just use the other one, but it does make surfing a bit more tricky.

Sometimes he has to have two mice.

And he takes my hand off whatever he wants and flings it back at me. Unfortunately, we both think this is funny, so he won't be stopping any time soon.

All of these things plus:

Feeding the cat (then bellowing 'MIAOW' to call the cat for dinner - cue cats fleeing the house)
Twiddling a paint brush in an empty coke bottle for hours
washing her hands
opening and closing microwave door

ds 3yrs.loves a measuring tape,screwdriver and wheelbarrow

NotQuiteCockney · 18/11/2005 13:10

Oh, and DS2 really wants to stir tea. Now. With my utensils, or the one he's been dragging around the floor for five minutes.

Is it possible to let a baby stir safely? He'd rather I wasn't holding the spoon at the same time.

(I do let him stir my empty coffee cups. I should stick him in the bathtub with a pot, water, and some spoons and leave him to it, I guess.)

littlerach · 18/11/2005 13:15

DD2, 15 months, has to have a remote control, a mobile phone (real), a credit/debit/AA style card or a sock with her at all times.
Each of these is referred to as "mama".

Lucycat · 18/11/2005 13:20

empty egg boxes, great for putting 'jewels' in aka bits of fluff/peas/corn off the floor
the cat ( of course!)
dh's wallet
the sticky bit from the pay and display ticket in the car park
the 'crunchy grass' this morning!

homemama · 18/11/2005 14:54

DS(12mths) is mad for the toilet at the moment. He loves it and wants to put everything down it, inc the loo roll which he can slide off the holder.
And yes, phones and remote controls. Although he loses interest in the remote control if you remove the battery.
Keys and glasses too.
Taking clothes out of drawers and putting them back in.
He has no interest whatsoever in plastic phones and keys bought from toyshops!

Janh · 18/11/2005 15:26

DS1 had his own drawer in the kitchen full of wooden spoons, tupperware, saucepan lids and other random unbreakable things and he went through a stage at about 18 months of emptying everything out, climbing in himself and sitting there proudly while he played with all the bits on the floor.

Angela2005 · 27/11/2005 17:52

LOL. I just saw this. I'm going to write them all out and give it to anyone who asks for ds's christmas list!

Lol at toddlers taking non-toys out with them.

We had to take a tube of toothpaste with us into town last week. Luckily we managed to "lose" it at the first possible distraction.

softmusk · 27/11/2005 18:32

my dd is 13 monthes she loves tins of cat food, and the remote

wavingordrowning · 27/11/2005 19:47

pooka · 27/11/2005 20:27

My dd went to bed tonight with a pumice stone that she's named "puppy", 2 toothbrushes and a medicine syringe. Each had to be kissed goodnight too.

charliegreensmum · 27/11/2005 20:38

Ds is 7 months and loves looking through magazines, the glossier the better, only discovered when desperate in doctor's surgery and picked up Vogue for him to look at. He also loves looking at glasses of fizzy drinks, not managed to get his hands on one yet though!!

vitomum · 27/11/2005 20:39

my ds is currently madly in love with a tiny bottle of olbas oil
