he seems scare to go....in his own...
I don't think he has balance.....either...

Did you experience that???

Anything we can do....

He'll do it in his own time! fwiw someone tol dme the other day that 16months is the average age for children to learn to walk!

HandbagAddiction · 16/11/2005 17:45

Sasa15 - if he's cruising and wanting to walk whilst holding your hands, then I think it's only a matter of time before he's off on his own.

For what it's worth - seemed like my dd cruised for ages and didn;t want to let go - but once she finally did - at 20 months - there was no looking back and no reverting back to crawling/bum shuffling. Seems an odd thing to say but I'm convinced she was merely waiting until she knew she could do it properly...and therefore minimise falls, etc. before wanting to set off on her own.

ds walked along our hallway at around 14 months but had never stood alone until then, just a quick step or two from one support to another. He was motivated by his friends being able to take stuff away faster than he could crawl or cruise. Certainly wasn't the "latest" of his little circle of friends though, there is huge variation.

ThomCat · 16/11/2005 17:53

Sound normal to me. Quite a few kids I know were only starting about the 16 / 18 month stage.

HRHQoQ · 16/11/2005 17:53

DS1 didn't walk until 18 months

sasa15 · 16/11/2005 18:08

ok...thank you
I guess I need to wait....
I think he will be happier to walk around...specially when we go in open space...he get fed up in the pushchair and there is not way that I need to carry around and then scream to back in the pushchair....

Friend's dd hung onto her parents fingers for ages - I think she liked making them walk around with her! Once in a shop she got so interested she toddled off by herself - until she realised what she was doing and sat down very suddenly!

Sooner or later he will realise how much more he can get up to if he walks by himself. Probably he can't see why he should bother yet?

QueenEagle · 16/11/2005 18:30

I thought ds3 was late when he didn't walk unitl he was 15 months (all my other were walking by a year). Once he started he never looked back, I would say he did things like jump with 2 feet a bit later as well but he never missed out because of it.

Have you tried giving him a walker to push along?

NannyL · 16/11/2005 18:55

They say dont even begin to think about worrying until they are 18 months!

plenty of time yet!

Clayhead · 16/11/2005 19:06

NannyL, no point worrying at 18 months either! It's perfectly normal to be later than that too.

dd was about 17 months
ds 21 months

There's no stopping them now...

seems average to me, try not to worry

monstrousmummy · 16/11/2005 21:05

Now I'm worried!! my ds is 22 mos and still cruising!!

princesspeahead · 16/11/2005 21:09

if he is cruising he is FINE.

my ds was 19.5 months! now 5 years old and just as physical and fast and coordinated as everyone else....

allyco · 17/11/2005 11:01

my DD is 15 months almost and not walking. she cruises and holds hands and stands alone but then just falls over.

It's good to know she's not the only one - mind you she was prem - was your DS Sasa15?

mcmudda · 17/11/2005 11:06

Ds was 17 mths. He was lazy and just asked for things to be brought to him instead

oliveoil · 17/11/2005 11:07

mine is 15 months and not even crawling .

Rolls around but won't walk or cruise or anything.

Her sister was 18 months (ish) before she walked but was crawling and cruising before then.

sasa15 · 18/11/2005 17:30

Hi girls.....ds was not premature...Allyco,

DD walked holding on to my finger at 14 months, but not alone till 16 months - she was just not ready to let go, and needed to build up her courage as well as her skills. The last few weeks/days before she DID let go were hard - she was very frustrated and cross. The day she first walked across the floor, she was a changed child - just delighted with herself!
I've been told by several different sources that age of walking is determined by genetics...motor skills plus temperament. Its certainly not to do with intelligence - wouldn't worry on that score!

Jasnem · 18/11/2005 20:28

DD1 didn't walk on her own until 17 months. Inconvenient for me as I had cs for DD2 when she was 15 months. I am convinced she was not prepared to do it until completely confident. She is now 6, very bright , but still not prepared to risk failing at most things.

lovecloud · 18/11/2005 20:34

Hello friends little boy just start walking at 27 months, he was a wicked bum shuffler and was like lightening. starting nursery really made him see that waist height was a bit boring and hard to reach the crayons

my other friends little girl start walking round her second bday. she did not bum shuffle more of a crawl but with one leg forward...

please do not worry - i know my friend got sick of peoples comments but her little boy is toilet trained and very clever, they cant be perfect in every way and they really do things when they are ready.

ds (chunky) walked at almost 17 mths and was walking consistently and steadily within a week.
dd (slim) started walkling at 13 mths and tottered, stumbled, crawled, fell over etc for another 2-3 months

Nightynight · 26/11/2005 21:46

I think babies who are good at cruising or bumshuffling generally walk later, dont they? theyve already got the mobility.

GREATauntymandy · 27/11/2005 07:58

mine is 14 months today and not walking. I reckon its 8 weeks from standing alone which would make him 16 months if he was standing but he isnt so he will be turned 16months...not worried!
