I feel uneasy about putting him in his cot as it is against SIDS advice but his head is practically touching the top of the basket and don't think the mattress is supportive for him anymore as he is nearly 17lbs! What to do?

How much and how big are those fold/clip onto side of bed cots that I have heard about, and can anyone reccommend one? That might be the way forward at night? Can't be as big as a normal cot, but must be longer than a moses basket- DS isn't wide but he is long! Grin

I had twins & only one bedroom, not enough room for bed & two cots, so DS slept in a cot and DD slept on a little mattress on the floor, in the gap between my bed & the cot. She was happy & it worked for all of us!

I think if there really is no way a cot/travel cot/carrycot would fit then the only way you could do it is by either sleeping on baby's floor by cot or both doors open and a good monitor.

All 3 of my DC were 15/16 months before they moved into their own rooms (DS2 is almost 15 mnths and will be moving in a few days) I personally wouldn't have been able to sleep easy before then.... and incase you wondered DS1 and DD both were taken to the cot awake and fell asleep fine and slept through the night! I am keeping fingers crossed for DS2.... I can't be that lucky... can I?

Oh and in answer to the question as to where they slept during the day, until around 4 months it was the moses basket carried into whichever room I was in and from 4 months to 7 months in a travel cot again in the room wherever I was and then from 7 months in their own cot.

i would just put him in his cot in his own room

Ozziegirly · 03/05/2011 05:27

What are your risk factors for SIDS? If they are really low, I would just put him in his own room in the cot and get a monitor for your own peace of mind.

We managed to get a really nice wooden rocking crib (mothercare brand) for £15 off gumtree (was the first one we looked at), and obviously there was no postage costs. I would really recommend you try there. I think the matress was about another £10 or £15 and it was substantially bigger than the moses basket, but much thinner than the cot (in a good way).

mousesma · 03/05/2011 07:04

I would get a travel cot, you can get a new one for under £30
direct.tesco.com/q/R.207-1450.aspx?utm_source=GoogleShopping&utm_medium=GSF_NormalFeed&utm_campaign=GSF_TescoDirect&utm_content=207-1450 that way you've got the added bonus of having somewhere for the baby to sleep if you go anywhere overnight.

I do know people who moved their babies into their own room from 6 weeks but I personally would have felt too uncomfortable with this.

Moulesfrites · 03/05/2011 20:39

Ok thanks for the advice ladies. I think a travel cot would fit into our room and we need one for when we go away anyway so I think we will go with that option until he is old enough to go in his own room. I just think at the minute I don't feel comfortable with the idea of him being in his own room. I check him all the time through the night and am still bf a couple of times a night so it would be a pain to have to actually get out of bed to feed him!

Amen to that! Grin

we got an amby nest for this prob. The frame is big but half of it could slide under our bed frame, then it worked really well.

My DD outgrew her basket at 7 wkd old. She was a very long baby and kept waking herself up by banging the sides and foot of the basket.
We could not fit the cot into our room so we moved her in to the proper cot in the room next to ours.
It felt strange at first but actually worked out brilliantly because she ended up sleeping 7 pm till 7am without needing any feeds in between.
I know that this is quite unusual. I guess I was just lucky.
Don't feel guilty if you have to move him. It may be the right move for you and your baby.

YorkshireTeaDrinker · 03/05/2011 23:02

My DD outgrew her basket at 12 weeks old (she was very long). We had a cot bed and it was way too big to put in our room, so we moved her into her own room. She has slept really well since - not always all through the night, but usually 7.30ish to 6.30is, with occasional early morning feeds. Partly, I think, because we don't disturb one another. I don't have a baby monitor, we just leave the bedroom doors ajar and I always hear her if she cries, but then she has a powerful set of lungs and the whole street can probably hear her when she's in full voice.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 03/05/2011 23:57

PM me - I have the perfect travel cot x

stabiliser15 · 04/05/2011 15:46

My DD hated her moses basket and so went into the cot in her room at 5 weeks. The reason she is in her own room rather than ours is that the wretched thing was built in her room and was too massive to move out without being dismantled. Before we did that we wanted to see whether she'd like the cot.

As it happens, she started sleeping much better as soon as she was in the cot and her own room - and we sleep better too.

In terms of the official advice about SIDS, we took that on board but decided this was best for us and our baby. However, we do take all the sensible precautions too. Like Astronaut79 said, she's about 4 paces away from me and I sleep with both doors open and the monitor right by my eye. Also like MayDayChild said, I usually wake up well before she cries. In terms of hearing our breathing - we're a family of snorers (DD included), and it is simply not possible not to hear DH!

stabiliser15 · 04/05/2011 15:47

That should of course read the monitor is by my EAR. Ooops.
