dd has said her first word. Not "mummy" or "daddy", no her first word was "shoes".

Random or what?

What were your dcs first words?

'Roomba'.

We were using it an awful lot to clear up after the amazing moulting dog. Blush

I read somewhere that "shoes" is a common first word, because it's likely that you buy your child their first pair of real shoes at some point around the time they are starting to talk. They are all proud of their new shoes and their new walking ability, and it's likely that you are saying "Let's put your shoes on" or whatever quite frequently, so they learn the word quite early.

My DS is only 7 months so no words yet!

AngelDog · 28/02/2011 22:38

More (a-mah), then Daddy, then eye and ear (eeyah). 'Eye' means 'something exciting' as well as 'eye', but 'ear' is accompanied by tugging on his or someone else's ear, which his how he shows affection :). He's 14 months.

essenceofSES · 28/02/2011 22:42

DS is 21mo and not got lots of words yet but his first few were:
"ish" (for my parents' fish tank)
"car"
and "shoes"!!!

My younger brother's first word was "cuckoo" as he used to sit with my mum in the piano teacher's front room whilst I had my piano lesson. In the front room was a cuckoo clock Grin

working9while5 · 28/02/2011 22:47

Boo (for boob), car, ball, duck and "nap nap" (crocodile).

WishIWasRimaHorton · 28/02/2011 22:51

DS - tractor (aged 15 months), car, weewee (which actually meant wheel!) shortly after that. and then nothing at all for months and months. he had all the words he needed!
DD - also tractor, but simultaneously di (biscuit) and more (but barked with a very long awwwww in the middle and a very stoney-faced expression)

DS's first sentence was 'Murphy (the cat) eating 'orridge'. And he was - indeed - licking DS's porridge bowl.

DD's still not great at stringing words together (2 today) but did say 'stay there' to me tonight as she went off to get a book! Cheeky!

Stillchuckingit · 28/02/2011 23:14

Bang!

(from a book we used to read over and over)

jaggythistle · 01/03/2011 14:48

I think DS's was teddy.

He picks up his cup for a 'cheers' as soon as he sees a bottle of wine now Blush

AdelaofBlois · 01/03/2011 14:57

'Bye bye Vera', when Vera Duckworth died!

TryingVeryHard · 01/03/2011 15:08

Jaggy, that's funny, DP and I still argue about DS's first word, I say it was "teddy" and he insists it was "Daddy" (of course)
It was definitely teddy.

BornToFolk · 01/03/2011 15:12

DS's first word was "dee" (tea). He'd point at any cup saying "dee! dee!". His first phrase was "cupadee" (cup of tea).

We honestly don't drink that much tea!

bruffin · 01/03/2011 16:11

Bye bye Vera', when Vera Duckworth died!

My DS did something similar!

I was 8 months pregnant with DD when Diana died and the funeral was about a week before DS's 2nd birthday.

We were watching the funeral while DS played on the floor. When the gates of Kensington Palace opened and we saw the coffin for the first time. He looked up from where he was playing, looked up to watch the television and just said "Bye Bye" then went on playing. It was a very odd moment.

He has been speaking for a while, but a few days later he swallowed a dictionery overnight and was spouting new words all day.

jaggythistle · 01/03/2011 16:14

DS's first phrase appears to be 'bye bye

Also used when birds fly away though, and for the end of any TV programme Blush eg 'Bye bye Octonauts*'

  • he is only 17 months so can't actually say Octonauts, but has a go.
Pigleychez · 01/03/2011 20:42

DD1 was another Shooozz (shoes) as well as the norm Mama and Dada.

DD2 has just started saying her first words... Mama, Dada, No, Oh No, Blush
I blame her sister whos constantly telling her No for taking her toys!

Rugbylovingmum · 02/03/2011 15:22

DDs first word was 'wazzat' or something like that repeated over and over while pointing at random objects/people. It was cute until we went to buy a christmas tree and she insisted on pointing at every single tree and yelling wazzat - 30 trees later the cute factor had worn off. It's a tree, that's a tree too, that's another tree, yes that's also a tree, look it's a bloody tree okay Wink.

What's that and where are still her favourite words, I'm dreading her learning why Grin.

OnEdge · 02/03/2011 15:24

DD = Sock !

shantishanti · 03/03/2011 14:37

Flower. Appropriate as she has a flower related name!

supadupapupascupa · 03/03/2011 14:46
