What toys does your 4-5 yr old ds play with?

Just asking because last night we had a new school friend over for tea. On the way from school to the car he was excited saying to ds 'what toys have you got, have you got Superman, have you got Spiderman?'.

We don't have any of these toys so I thought 'oh no!' - all was well and he didn't particularly look for them when he got here - they played really nicely with the stuff we do have (then not so nicely trashing the bedding upstairs! ho hum - there's a group of boys for you!!)

So anyway, I guess what I'm asking is, do most 4-5 yr old boys have these Spiderman toys etc? Ds1 is the eldest so he's not influenced by older children (yet!) so we are still on wooden railway, cars and garage, jigsaws etc. Tbh, we are out most of the time so they aren't sitting around playing with toys that much anyway.

So, what does your ds like to play with?

I don't have a ds but my dd is 4.5 and still plays with her wooden railway, cars, remote-controlled crane, wooden fort and soldiers, jigsaws and things. I don't think she'd know what Superman was if one smacked her in the face ... mind you, she doesn't know about Barbies yet, but I dare say another couple of months at school will sort that one out ...

IlanaK · 14/10/2005 13:19

My ds1 is 4.5 year old. He does not go to school so is uninfluenced in that respect. His bedroom is also the playroom so is full of toys, but they are all what I would consider educational. He has games, puzzles, building sets, a play kitchen, cars, garage, trains, etc. Lots of books too. However, we have been round to friends houses with similar age boys and it was very differemt. A lot of swords, robots, guns, etc.

Gobbledispook · 14/10/2005 13:21

That's what I mean IlanaK - I've been to another friend who's boy is just 4 and they have tanks with cannons on etc. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with this it's just that we haven't moved on to these things yet and I'm wondering how come other boys the same age have.

We only have Nick Jnr on this house too so mine haven't even seen Spiderman, Star Wars etc

Dare say WWB!! Well done for getting this far!!

We also have NickJr as the prefered channel so DS1 has no access to spiderman etc. POwer Rangers was very very big at his football class with the boys there, but I had a chat to him about why I didn't like it and why I thought fighting was wrong and that seemed to die down. Ds1 would happily play board games all day if I was willing to sit and do it with him!

Ulysees · 14/10/2005 13:29

DS2 is 5 and has spiderman et al but prefers his robots from robot wars and train tracks.

My 4 yr old is still playing with his (many) train sets, puzzles, Happyland etc. He is also not at school yet.

However my 3 yr old is mad about Spiderman and Superman and all that! He doesnt have many of the toys so he makes his own 'spiderman' with duplo!

Bozza · 14/10/2005 13:33

Right my DS is 4 (5 in Feb). He has a couple of spidermen - bought by nursery friends for his fourth birthday and he plays with them a little bit. His best friend is very into all the superhero stuff and he is influenced by that. Other than that he plays with:

wooden train set
work bench (but think this has seen its day really)
cars/mat/track/garage - although enthusiasm also wained on this
lego - probably would do more on this if his sister was so intent on destroying it (he has "proper" lego including pirate ship, police boat etc in his room, she has duplo in hers)
playmobil - he has airport, plane, bin lorry, tour bus plus other bits
farm - he has a wooden board with fields etc and a largish collection of tractors etc and animals (much of which were DHs)
dressing up stuff
action men - again bought for his 4th birthday by friends. Although he mainly played with these outside over the summer because he "acquired" a big jeep thing at the summer fair which I wouldn't have in the house
leappad
shopping food/till

Out of these atm I would say the faves were the trains and the farm. But he does have phases. And has played with all of them this week while he has been housebound with tonsilitis. DS is influenced by what his friends have though I would say and is desperate for some star wars kit.

He also has a reasonable selection of craft stuff, jigsaws, games and books.

DS watches very little actual TV its usually videos or DVDs and apart from several Disney films we only have Thomas, Bob, Tweenies, Teletubbies (for DD) and Engie Benjy. Occasionally we have Cbeebies on and v. occasionally milkshake in our bedroom in a morning.

KBear · 14/10/2005 13:39

planes, trains and automobiles

no spiderman, superman or other action heros.

He loves his wooden train set and ELC train set best of all.

northender · 14/10/2005 13:47

My ds (4) is thunderbirds obsessed which comes from his dad's similar obsession!! Also plays with wooden train set, cars, fire engines etc. (oh and ball games and board games for as long as he can get someone to play them with him!)Darling mil once bought him a Spiderman toy "because he said he wanted it"!!! Last week he got a new Thunderbird toy and some bricks so had to get rid of an old toy and he chose the Spiderman[smug emoticon]!!
As far as tv goes, quite like some of the progs on milkshake but the ads drive me bananas.

Really thick question but do you have to have Sky to get Nick Jr?

Ah so thats why DS doesn't watch it!

Rhubarb · 14/10/2005 14:04

Cardboard boxes. A wheelbarrow filled with stones and a couple of plastic bottles with their tops cut off - dd aged 5 played with this for an hour!
Egg boxes and some paint.
Catalogues and a pair of scissors and glue.

Whizzz · 14/10/2005 14:14

DS had 1 Power Ranger figure last Xmas and we bought him a dinosaur transformer thing for his 5th bday. Other than that he loves board games, cars, books, his Leappad, colouring & making things

MotherofOne · 14/10/2005 14:20

DS1 is 5 and since hew was 4 has had & played with mostly:

  • lego (No. 1 fav)
  • Geomag
  • pens/ paints/ blopens/ felt tips/ crafty things
  • beyblades -some powerranger/ spiderman figures (transformer types - but not particularly favoured)
  • cars & brio with his little brother
  • a gameboy
  • computer games & appropriate websites: lego/ cbbc/ cbeebies etc
  • educational DVDs
  • outdoor toys (balls. bikes etc - all the usual stuff) Oh, and LOADS of BOOKS!
bambi06 · 14/10/2005 14:36

ds adores cardboaard boxes and role play lik epost office/schools etc. also loves drawing and making creative things

mrsdarcy · 14/10/2005 14:45

My DS2 is 4 and started school this year. He likes "home corner" things - toy food, cooking stuff etc.

He also likes Lego and usually has some kind of container in which he carries round his current favourite treasures, which are bits of old junk or cracker toys!

However he also plays with spiderman and star wars toys but that is largely because DS1, who is almost 6, plays with them.

We have toy swords in the house and they have just got pop guns (much against my wishes!) but we won't have cowboy-type guns in the house.

LunarSea · 14/10/2005 14:54

trains, trains and more trains
road system & cars
castle
farm
PC games
jigsaws
simple board games
bob the builder machines
bikes
space hopper
playmobil
marble run
market stall
loads of books

Not a spiderman in sight at our house!

Gobbledispook · 14/10/2005 15:03

Thanks everyone.

Btw, I'm not saying that having Spiderman etc is a bad thing - just that we're not on that stage yet and I wondered if we were unusual. Two of ds's friends the same age (but not from school) always have on T-shirts with Star Wars, Scooby Doo, Spiderman etc and I just don't buy this stuff a)because I don't particularly like it and b)because ds1 has never seen these things.

Was just interested what everyone else's ds was into to see if he was going to stand out!!

Motherofone - what is Geomag and also with regard to the Gameboy - can you get appropriately aged games, i.e. ones they can manage?

I think I'm going to look at more playmobil and some construction stuff (lego type or meccano - do they still do that?!?) for Xmas.

OP posts:
Bozza · 14/10/2005 15:19

You see I know my DS would love a spiderman top but I refuse to buy them (compromise with him having spiderman pants and pjs). He asked if I could have stripes shaved into his hair today. I found myself sounding very much like my Mum. And he's really not a very streetwise boy - still doesn't get the idea of adverts (as in you see it on the advert then pester Mum about it).

You can get mecano. I was wondering about some contstruction stuff for DS other than the lego but am undecided which way to go. Geomag is construction I think. DS also has a small set of kids k'nexx which he has renewed interest in while he's been stuck in the house this week.
