What age did your child stop using the buggy?

My daughter is 3 years 3 months old and she still likes to sit in her buggy?

I saw someone mention on a thread some time ago, that this is not the done thing at her age? Blush

So am I indulging her and letting her be a lazy madam, or is there nothing wrong with it!

It's not just the distance or the exercise, it's the co-operation - or lack of it when the toddler just won't walk!

SummerRain · 01/01/2011 16:34

should add, I had an 18 month gap and a 2.5 gap and never bought a double.

dd did use the buggy on a trip to the zoo last year at 5 but she was only in it for about 30 mins, she'd broken her leg a few months earlier and all the walking around the zoo (we were there for 6/7 hours) had exhausted her... she's normally a strong walker though and i think that's due mainly to the fact that i didn't drive until she was 3.5 so she'd had no choice but to walk everywhere with me til then.

Summer - my DS2 was my earliest walker - and earlierst not to use the pushchair, - I've never had a car and he's a dreadful walker Xmas Grin

oh ds1 is a lazy sod too and i didn't drive til he was 2 Grin He still whines if we have to walk! I just like to pretend that poor dd being booted out of the buggy at 18 months did her good Wink

blueshoes · 01/01/2011 17:11

Depends on the child, how long they have to walk for and how quickly you need to walk. They ALL walk when they are ready.

ilovesprouts · 01/01/2011 17:17

Children's development varies considerably.

It is child abuse to treat a child as a baby when they are school age, unless there is a specific special need.

I prefer baby reins to control my children. They quickly learn that if they don't behave then I make them. Both my children hated baby reins.

My son gave up the the buggy at 4 years 2 months. He had problems learning to walk and had child physio. It was a walking problem not a parenting problem. My dd is in the buggy about half the time at 20 months.

Yes, we walk a lot. Children in Africa walk miles with their mothers to fetch water. Children can walk reasonable distances.

mumbar · 01/01/2011 19:51

From about 11 months DS wanted to walk everywhere (unless tired) - I actually enforced the buggy in certain situations for ease and speed. We got a car when he was 3yo and he hardly used it after that. I kept it until he was 4, as we went away a week later but we never used it when I thought I would so left it there!

Everychild is different tho. Friends DD1 was out of it by 18 months and her DD2 had to be forced to walk at 4.2 when she started school. She screamed to be carried until she was 5.2. Friend had bought a double and regrets the waste of money as she didn't get the use from it.

Do what you feel comfortable with, theres no hard and fast rule.

BaroqinAroundTheChristmasTree · 01/01/2011 20:04

LOL Verity - yes that was my Santa video Xmas Smile.

They are pretty cute..........most of the time Xmas Wink

blueshoes · 01/01/2011 21:03

It is not 'child abuse'. Get a grip.

ilovesprouts · 01/01/2011 21:06

my son has sn and wont walk far !!!

mummyosaurus · 01/01/2011 21:11

I do a lot of walking with my pushchair, so DS, who is just turned 4 still goes in it occasionally. Also I look after my DNephew 4 days a week, who is 3 1/2 so to keep both of them safe I do sometimes chuck them both in the Phil and teds.

My eldest, DD, pretty much gave up the pushchair at 3 as had DS and Dnephew in my double buggy, she has learnt to be a pretty fast walker.

Often it just depends how much whining I am prepared to put up with from them, if we use the pushchair or not. I am SAHM so usually have time to walk

undercovasanta · 01/01/2011 21:13

DD stopped using the pushchair when she was 2.5yo and DS was born.

We walk a mile round trip to school (half of journey is up VERY steep hill, and I would never have got a double up it).

Used a buggy board on an off between 2.5 and 3yo but never really got on with it IYSWIM.

I expect DS will be in the pushchair a bit longer than 2.5yo, but will not still be in it when he starts school at 3.5yo.

nextchapter · 01/01/2011 21:38

DS1 was around 2 months his third birthday when I started cutting down, however this was mainly due to being pregnant with twins and him needing to get used to not being in the buggy and I figured pushing a buggy whilst being pregnant would be awful. He was free of moaning by around 3.2. However he still jumped in the double buggy on occassion, when a twin was in a sling at 3.4 and older. The DT were cutting down by around 2.3 as a double duggy was a nightmare. And fully out by 2.10.

DD stopped using buggy at 15 months. She had no choice but to walk as her bro was born and I absolutely refused point blank to use a double buggy....hate them with a passion.

CrispyTheChristmasCracker · 01/01/2011 22:27

4.2 and still use it for the preschool run. We live in a VERY hilly area and DD1 cannot manage 2.5 miles walking. So either car or buggy it is. I prefer fresh air so we take the buggy. I REFUSE to get riled by people who judge our choices

exexpat · 01/01/2011 22:36

DD still used it at weekends until she was nearly four, as she still fell asleep in it after lunch if we were out for the day. She stopped using it when she moved up to the preschool age group where they phased out after-lunch naps - she was already perfectly capable of walking long distances. I think I missed it more than she did - nowhere to put the shopping and coats and so on.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 01/01/2011 22:39

DS2 is nearly 4, and occasionally uses it if we're out and about and he's tired. It's much easier all round if he sits in the buggy and allows the rest of us (DH, 11 yr old DD and 13 yr old DS) to move at a reasonable pace without having to slow down for a whingey 3 yr old.

To those who pull cats bum mouths - a big fat raspberry

bambiandthumper · 01/01/2011 22:40

We live in London so tend to walk everywhere to tire them out get lots of fresh air :)

My DT's are 3.5 and DD2 is 7 months, I generally take the buggy with two seats behind each other as I can't hold both the twin's hands and push the buggy.

I also find I walk quicker with just one of them so I tend to do short, relatively fast bursts walking, and then shove them in the buggy and swap over. It also means if one of them is very tired -or has a meltdown- I can just strap em' in and go.
