Codswallop, you can't have the fat sendentary baby - he's mine! No crawling, just happy, contented sitting about. At the library story time, while all the other babies crawled, climbed and fought, ds would lie on his side, head propped up nonchalently on my feet, listening. Mind you, I once pointed out he was lying about lazily, and got a funny look from my friend, who pointed out that I was also lying on my side my head propped up on my hand That's my boy!
BTW he never crawled

Meant 20 weeks - I blame 2 big glasses of wine! (ds1 and 2 first full day at nursery before return to work next week so lamenting end of maternity leave!)

huppa · 30/07/2003 15:11

My dd started crawling at 5 and a half months - again before she could sit unaided. Now at 7 months happily cruising round furniture. Just keeping my fingers crossed that she´s so quick at crawling she won´t bother with walking until much later.

judetheobscure · 30/07/2003 15:58

A friend of mine had a baby who crawled at 4 months - he was unbelievable and, quite frankly, looked rather odd. Caused no end of problems, could get out of cot, was alwasy getting into trouble. Not recommended

steppemum · 30/07/2003 16:35

my ds has been able to wriggle himself around the room since 6 months and started to crawl at 7 months (2 weeks ago). He couldn't sit before he started to crawl, but then spent 2 weeks only doing one or two crawl steps and working on his sitting. In the last week (7.5 months) he has got crawling up to speed, and learnt to pull himself up, so that today he started cruising the furniture. I'm torn between being so proud of him and dreading it!

musica · 30/07/2003 16:53

ds started crawling at 6 months - again, he couldn't sit unaided. I was really looking forward to that point where they will sit with their toys around them, happily immobile, but no, I had manic baby crawling round room causing chaos!

ANNIE1 · 31/07/2003 02:09

DD2 crawled at 5 1/2 months was pulling herself to standing at 7 months but couldn't sit unaided until 8 months. Walked at 10 months.

codswallop · 31/07/2003 07:28

I have noticed less wriggling since I started this... maybe he has got the message.

think a 4 month crawler would be bizarre

Musica, dd was the same! It was hell. I had 2 months of happy sitting baby with ds before he started to crawl, much easier.

Melly · 31/07/2003 13:16

codswallop, does your ds spend time on his tummy? Just wondered because dh keeps nagging me to put our ds on his tummy (he is nearly 16 weeks) as he thinks this will encourage him to be an early crawler!! Just what I need.....2 year old dd tearing around the place, two large dogs and ds starting to crawl, no thanks! DD always hated being put on her tummy and wouldn't tolerate it even for a couple of minutes, she crawled at 10.5 months and didn't roll over until she was 9 months.
I've noticed in the last day that ds will pull himself forwards to a more upright sitting position when he's in his bouncy chair, don't remember dd doing this at all, is this relevant? perhaps he's just trying to get a better view of big sis!

eefs · 31/07/2003 13:31

ds never crawled - I felt cheated of an entire baby phase.
He was a lovely round laid back little babe who walked at 14 months +. Now he's a skinny wriggling superfast little boy - I know which phase I found easier.

aloha · 31/07/2003 14:23

eefs, snap. How old is yours now?

Lisa1 · 31/07/2003 15:27

my ds2 crwaled at just 6 months, pulling humself up from about 9 months. He onyl sat unaided at 11 months , now at 12 months still crawling, and doesn't seem too interested in learning to walk. Now dd1, sat at 5 months, crawled at 15 months and walked at 19 months. Now what do the text books say they should do!!

wickedstepmother · 31/07/2003 15:29

My DD was a late crawler and didn't get the hang of it until 10 months

Queenie · 31/07/2003 16:07

Melly, you make a relevant point about putting babies on their tummies to encourage crawling. I read recently in one of the broadsheets that because of the cot death advice not to place babies on their tummies to sleep this practice is avoided during waking time also and therefore there appears to be a rise in non crawlers. Both my dd and ds were early crawlers (6 mths) and both loved being on their tummies night and day but my nephew hated it and only crawled at 10 mths.

codswallop · 31/07/2003 16:08

Mine cant roll back the other way yet.. when does that happen?

OP posts:
nursie · 31/07/2003 16:35

My ds rolled for the first time today - hurray!
He has always had some time on his tummy as he seems to like it, although he quickly gets tired.
I think it comes with being a first-time mum that you encourage your baby to move and then with subsequent babies you leave them as long as possible before they can rampage round the house!

codswallop · 31/07/2003 21:35

I spoke too soon - is shoving legs under bum. NOOOOOO!

Nursie and Codswollop,
It's so reassuring to read this thread - my dds is 8 months and only just sitting unadided for a few seconds, at the 8 month check they raised this as something to follow-up in a month, so now I feel I have to push her to sit ! But she has been rolling over and over all across the room for a couple of months.
In my mothers group she is the only one not sitting pretily playing or crawing. I want to let her do things when she wants but it's amazing how the group pressure gets to me!

ds1 was on the move at 6 months but I am attempting to slow it down with ds2!!!! probably cause complaints if I joke about tying the child up etc....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

eefs · 20/08/2003 16:26

Aloha, sorry, never saw your question. DS is three next month. Your ds is just a bit younger right?
He never crawled then, but shuffled along on three limbs for a while - the funniest thing I ever saw. Now he crawls when playing tigers/horsie/doggie.... knees of steel that boy.

aloha · 20/08/2003 22:09

Eefs, yes my ds is nearly two. He only crawled after walking for ages! Very keen on animals so I expect he'll be the same as yours. Funny, aren't they?

misdee · 20/08/2003 22:56

cvoddy, at 4 months my dd was rolling everywhere. at 6months she was comando crawling, at 8months proper crawling, 9months pulling her self up and cruising, now she has just started walking!! and she is a rather large girl (size of a 2year old lol) and there is no stopping her. she dives me up the way, is very into everything, my 1st dd crawled at 9months and was so easy to keep occupied, dd2 is just a nightmare baby, but i love her to bits, chubby legs and all!

tallulah · 21/08/2003 21:18

my 3rd crawled- albeit backwards- at 4 months! Toddler Group was amazed. He then did the walking round the furniture at 5 months, but didn't learn to sit unaided for many many months after that. (& what a pain to have a fully mobile baby who doesn't understand no or leave it!)

By contrast, the youngest (a Back to Sleep baby) sat unaided at 8 months & didn't crawl until about 9/10 months. The other 3 walked at 10- 11 months but he was 13 months before he walked unaided. They are all different.
