I was just wondering when others have done this, and is it a lot of hassle? My dd is 19 months.

when they can climb out

sandyballs · 25/08/2005 14:31

Depends on the child - my twin DDs were climbing out at about 15 months so made sense to make it safer and take the sides off their cots. Amazed your DD hasn't tried to escape Malorytowers - you're very lucky .

colditz · 25/08/2005 14:31

I tried when ds was 2. he fell out, and made his nose bleed so much i called an ambulance (I panicked).

He is now 2.4 and i am going to keep him in it until he is at least 3. He likes it in his cot anyway. he uses it as a trampoline.

Kidstrack2 · 25/08/2005 14:39

My dd is 2.3yrs and I'm moving her into a junior bed within the next few weeks. She is trying to climb out in the morning to come into our room, so makes sense to transfer her. My dd was about 2yrs 4m when I put him in a big bed and he was fine, I left his cot up in the same room just incase but after a few weeks we dismatled it.

mistyblue · 25/08/2005 14:43

My dd is 2.3 and is probably ready for a bed now.Although my ds who is 4 does'nt always shut the stair gate at the top so a bit worried about dd and the stairs as she only goes up and down them with me at present.

Pagan · 25/08/2005 14:45

DD is almost 2 and still in her cot. I'm with Malory Towers in this one. She knows she can't go anywhere so she stays put. I guess once she can climb out then that's the time.

pesha · 25/08/2005 14:45

Dd went into a bed aged 2 because we'd just moved house and it seemed like a good opportunity to make the change and she was absolutely fine with it.
Ds went into a bed aged 17months because he started climbing out of the cot! And although i put a stairgate on his room he did end up staying up alot later just playing in his room or staring out his window at passing cars and people, i wish id been able to keep him in a cot longer but it wasnt possible.

fifilala · 25/08/2005 15:05

ds went into a bed when he was 23 months. just was not happy in cot (wasn't trying to climb out etc.) All basically went well - we have had our rough moments but i don't think any of it was to do with being in a bed- more just like being a toddler. Never used cots sides either - has only fallen out 3-4 times (and it is a proper divan with drawers so quite high!)-but never hurt himself, just tends to wake up with a "what happened" type face!!!)

aloha · 25/08/2005 15:16

When you buy a beautiful old pine sleigh bed on Ebay and can't wait to try it - ds was two and a bit, I think.

aloha · 25/08/2005 15:16

No hassle, totally fine, just the same only we could get in with him and read bedtime stories , which is yummy.

We moved DD1 out at 18 months, the reason being that she toppled out onto a wooden floor. DD2 is now 18 months, she hasnt fallen out and I can not see any reason to move her yet. I think I will hold off untuil if and when she gets to the stage of climbing out. By the way they are/were both in cot beds.

SleepySuzy · 25/08/2005 15:42

Aw, Aloha, I would so love a sleigh bed! Aren't they gorgeous.

The cot dd is in is just a cot, not cot bed, so I don't have the advantage of being able to remove the sides.

DD is 2.3 and I'm another who's waiting until she keeps climbing out. She stays happily in her cot in the mornings, sometimes until 9 o'clock, and I know that once she's in a bed as soon as she's awake she'll be in to me. I know I should really get up and get on with jobs while she's still in bed, but I don't! I'm making the most of my life of Reilly in the mornings as it can't last.

madmarchhare · 25/08/2005 15:50

Snap Surfermum, we were 9.15 this morning! DS is still only 21mos but I fully itend to make the most of it.

Unfortunately though were not going to know when the time is right till we here a 'thud' in the night .

ajmum · 25/08/2005 16:43

9.15 - how lucky are you?!!!

Has anyone with a dd or ds in a grobag had them climb out of their cot? I'm relying on the combined force of the cot and grobag to mean that I don't have to move dd to a bed until she can sort of understand the 'stay in your bed' instruction!

nutcracker · 25/08/2005 16:46

My Ds is 3 in december and he is still in his cot.

He has never ever tried to climb out but he does thrash a bout a bit in the night and i think he is getting a bit big for it so we will move him to a bed shortly.

SleepySuzy · 25/08/2005 16:48

9.15????? WOW!!

Sleighbed was cheap on ebay! It is lovely.

pinkmamma · 25/08/2005 20:04

My DS had just turned 3 when I put him in a bed Haven't had any probs, think he was old enough to understand he has to stay in bed. Occasionally I hear him having a rummage round his room after I have put him to bed, but its rare.

SleepySuzy · 25/08/2005 20:07

Looks like I'm leaving it for quite a while then!

2.1, about 2 weeks ago we turned his cot into a bed as he was climbing out.
We have had no probs, he comes into us between 6~7am. Never gets out at night once he has been put down.
