Apologies in advance for the suggestion it might me, no offence intended if you have a Casey! I love the name, it's DH who thinks it might be a bit chavvy.

I love it for a boy or girl. I also like it as it's an Irish surname, reflects my family background (not DHs).

Thanks!

I will defend the name Casey its definatly NOT chavvy. I have a son named Casey so obviusly I love the name. I do think it suits a boy rather than a girl though, and had he been a girl he would not have been a Casey. I think Cassie is lovely for a girl. And the good thing is that its not an over popular name for a boy, there are no other children in his school with the name Casey. Its a great name NewbieT

i dont think its chavvy we have it on our name list, tho we have just found out that baby no 5 is a girl so am not sure if we will still want to use it, we had assumed this baby would be a boy and so only thought of boys names

scoobychocolate · 10/07/2010 17:12

4madboys- At last another person who likes the name Casey and doesnt think its chavvy. It feels horrible when you see your own childs name up for discussion and most people hate it.

bigstripeytiger · 10/07/2010 17:18

I know a female Casey. She is lovely, and not chavvy, so I wouldnt see the name as chavvy.

I think that the traditional spelling would be safer though, rather than anything too unique.

mrswill · 10/07/2010 17:53

Hmmmm, it is a name upon first hearing screams chav, but tis the fault of all the kaciee mae, kc-jay's around. But I do like it for a girl, but not keen on for a boy, too feminine. On its own though and not paired with another name for safety.

NewbieT · 10/07/2010 17:55

Scoobychocolate,

I'm so sorry this thread's made you feel horrible, it wasn't a nice suggestion to make in the first place, and I certainly don't think there's anything wrong with the name, I love it myself. It's a shame that any name picks up negative connotations, it's weird really, a name is just a name after all and it's all about the individual who bears it. I'm sure your Casey's wonderful, I'm just jealous you could use it and it looks like I might have a fight on my hands to get past DH's percetions! And good to know he's the only one in his school, personally I think that's preferable to being one of several in the class/year who bear the same classic/popular name but different strokes for different folks.

4madboys, congrats on expecting your 5th, wow! a girl after 4 boys eh, she'll be well protected for sure! Back to the drawing board for girls names then, good luck with that!

Cordelia C would be lovely I think- it's funny how names you wouldn't usually think up sound great with a surname. Don't know what yours is but Cordelia would sound excellent with any surname.

Or
Cassandra
Celia or Cecilia
Catherine

can't think of any for boys!

LittleSilver · 10/07/2010 21:25

yes

elgreco · 10/07/2010 22:08

Why are all irish names begining with a C or K considered chavvy?

BunnyLebowski · 10/07/2010 23:23

LMAO at K'Sea

To me Casey is a very chavvy name. It sounds americanised and really downmarket.

My little girl is called Cassie. It's not short for anything but she is named after my Great-Aunt (my surrogate nana) who was called Catherine. I remember her telling me that her Dad used to call her 'His wee Cassie' when she was a child . She died just before I found out I was pregnant .

In my opinion Cassie is a pretty but spirited name that has a lovely timeless quality. But then I would think that wouldn't I?

blueshoes · 10/07/2010 23:32

Yes.

scoobychocolate · 11/07/2010 11:40

I have decided not to worry about other people thinking the name Casey is a chavvy or downmarket name. I love it which is why I chose it for my son. It felt horrible at first seeing most people say it was not a nice name but every one has opinions and each to there own i suppose. And he is the only one in his school with the name Casey so he is not one of many which I like

Ineedsomesleep · 11/07/2010 13:46

Scoobychocolate. Exactly what I think. You should choose a name for your DC that both you and the Dad like and that you think will

a suit them and
b take them through the rest of their lives.

To hell with what everyone else thinks, its not their child.

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 11/07/2010 14:00

I think Casey is a lovely name. It only becomes chavvy when it is spelled in some silly way (like K'sea). For either a boy or a girl it makes me think of a child who is adventurous, loves being outdoors, is independant, bright and funny.

My only problem with it is that I am now cross with myself that it never crossed my mind for any of the dses.

Kathleen123 · 11/07/2010 14:07

As it a girls name I dont think its chavvy. I prefer Cassie though. As a boys name, afraid I think it is possibly chavvy.

scoobychocolate · 11/07/2010 16:43

Ineedsomesleep-thanks for your comment,it definatly suits him,and i know will suit him all through his life.

StayingDavidTennantsGirl- My casey is definatly all that you said, perhaps you could have another baby and use the name

I think Casey suits a boy rather than a girl, would not have choose it if he had been a girl.

fatlip · 11/07/2010 16:52

My nephew is a Casey. Not chavvy at all.

I don't like it for a girl though.

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 11/07/2010 17:52

One problem, scooby - dh has had the snip. And I am too old and knackered to do all that again, unfortunately.

I wonder if I could persuade one of the dses to change their name.

careylouwho · 11/07/2010 18:03

I really like it. I grew up in Canada though, so I don't turn up my nose at all things American in quite the same way you lot over here do. I like it for both boys and girls. I think it's funny that someone suggested Carey as an alternative - that's my name and I would have preferred Casey! To each their own...

tyler80 · 11/07/2010 18:06

Casey to me just sounds American (lived there for 4 years), knew a few, all female. Judging by their ages it was popular mid to late 70s

But 'normal' American not redneck American. I think it's quite nice, wouldn't consider it 'chavy' at all
