Apologies in advance for the suggestion it might me, no offence intended if you have a Casey! I love the name, it's DH who thinks it might be a bit chavvy.

I love it for a boy or girl. I also like it as it's an Irish surname, reflects my family background (not DHs).

Thanks!

Yes.

EnglandAllenPoe · 09/07/2010 14:57

doesn't sound chavvy. does sound American.

not a fan myself.

Indaba · 09/07/2010 15:02

Oh yes, it is!

BertieBasset · 09/07/2010 16:24

Carrie?

addie81 · 09/07/2010 16:26

I don't like the word "chavvy" as a way of describing things, but am going to be honest as requested and say yes! I think it sounds more American than chavvy, but it is nonetheless a bit chavvy. Sorry!!

NewbieT · 09/07/2010 16:37

I don't mind american...

Thanks for all your replies, is interesting to read different perceptions, American hadn't occured to me I must admit, but don't really mind that!

Interesting point addie, and thanks for replying. what would be a good alternative word for chavvy though? I did have a think and couldn't come up with anything that conveyed the same meaning that didn't sound worse, but open to suggestions!

Really, really do not like it - sorry

CapitalText · 09/07/2010 17:28

Agree that Cassie (short for Cassandra) would be lovely

CapitalText · 09/07/2010 17:30

Cassie could also be short for Acacia or Catherine.

Jojay · 09/07/2010 17:31

Yep, I'm afraid it is

addie81 · 09/07/2010 17:31

To the OP - I agree, its difficult to think of a word which sums up what chavvy means which I think is why the word has fallen into such wide usage. I think the unfortunate thing about the work chavvy is that, lets be honest, it really just means "common". Most of us would think it unacceptable to refer to someone or something as "common" on the grounds that to do so would be snobby and offensive, but we all freely use the word "chav" or "chavvy".

valiumSingleton · 09/07/2010 18:46

i don't like it. It might be more popular but I prefer Gracie. similar sound but just nicer.

confuseddoiordonti · 09/07/2010 18:52

I know a dog called Casey (female) and it suits her. However, I am not keen on it for humans of whatever gender.
Soz!

ShowOfHands · 09/07/2010 18:53

Reminiscent of a certain socioeconomic status?

It's very difficult to define the c word any other way now.

FWIW, I dislike Casey too.

Yes it is a bit chavvy sounding to me! Although that does not mean she will necessarily grow up to actually be a chav!!

christabell · 09/07/2010 20:22

Reminds me of the character in Home and Away circa 1997. I like the suggestion of Cassie though.

I agree with your DH's opinion. There are loads of great Irish names if you'd like your heritage to be honoured.

GladioliBuckets · 09/07/2010 22:20

I have a Kurt and we thought about having a middle name beginning with C so we could call him KC for short. However the only C name I like is that of an ex boyfriend so that was vetoed. (PS DH insists I have to mention that DS was named after the writer Kurt Vonnegut, not Kurt Cobain.)

sonniebonnie · 09/07/2010 22:22

I like Cassandra/Casey/Cass for a girl. Sounds feminine to me.

JuJusDad · 09/07/2010 22:25

yes, definitely "chavvy".

Littlefish · 09/07/2010 22:39

I know a K'sea. Yuck!

TheNextMrsDepp · 09/07/2010 22:40

Chav-tastic.

This thread is making me a bit sad as my dd is friends with a Casey. Normally on these threads it's split 50:50 people will defend a name, but nobody seems to be defending this one. I don't like it much, but I had thought I was alone not liking it.
