Annabeth- Has my friend fallen in love with a made-up name??!

So my friend is having a dd next week and loves the name Annabeth. I think it's a 'real' name but can't seem to find it in any baby books. She is worried that everyone will think it's horrible even though she loves it. So what do we all think?

Hmmm first impression - made up!

autodidact · 08/07/2010 23:23

I have a vague notion that I've heard it before... I'm not too keen though.

GrimmaTheNome · 08/07/2010 23:23

I think its made up but actually does sound nice. Maybe she could do Anna-Beth, two perfectly valid names legally conjoined?

violetsmile · 08/07/2010 23:23

That's what she thought but she loves it and I guess I don't think it's bad. I like Anna and I like Beth but just not sure about Annabeth iyswim?!

It exists Or, at least it has already been thought of/used somewhere!

violetsmile · 08/07/2010 23:24

See she hates the hyphenated thing and I am not ken on it either although in this case I do think it's probably the best option.

I have to say that I would say 'what' a few times if I heard it, assuming that someone was saying Annabel and that my hearing was finally on the way out.

I think it's pretty but... but... I think with unusual names she needs to be VERY sure.

toccatanfudge · 08/07/2010 23:26

also exists here

violetsmile · 08/07/2010 23:26

Oh Said thank you, she will be thrilled to know she hasn't dreamt it up from thin air! Not that it matters I guess if no-one uses it or like it either way. It's her choice but I think she kind of wants to validate the name before she goes ahead with it.

another one here

PrettyCandles · 08/07/2010 23:27

Sounds like a nickname for Hannah-Elizabeth. But if she likes it, and it doesn't mean anything bad or embarrasing (which AFAIK it doesn't) then what's wrong with a made up name? Wendy is a made up name.

There's an actress (Gish) and a book character (Chase) called Annabeth, apparently

snice · 08/07/2010 23:28

also actress Annabeth Gish

violetsmile · 08/07/2010 23:29

True PrettyCandles. Like I said I think it's actually fairly nice whether it's been used before or not. If she loves it then it's great. It's not a hideous name, I'd just never heard of it before.

Just text her to tell her there's an actress called it and it's a viable name and she is ecstatic! Looks like there will be another little Annabeth entering the world any day now then! Actually the more I write it, the more I am liking it but I am not sure if that's because I am thinking of it in terms of my best friend's dd now iywim? Anyway thanks for the responses.

I think there is an American actress called Annabeth. It sounds more like a twist on a classic name than made-up.

valiumSingleton · 09/07/2010 09:00

Just clicked on that link and it has been around since the 1900 US Census. So Neveah it aint.

BessieBoots · 09/07/2010 09:02

I really like it.

Wanderingsheep · 09/07/2010 09:18

I like it!

Teapot13 · 09/07/2010 10:10

There are made-up names where people just put letters together and call it a name, and then there are made-up names that have a meaning, or originate from more classic names.

Surely Marianne was once a made-up name, out of Mary and Anne? I agree that if she's worried she can name the baby Anna Elizabeth and call her Anna-Beth. To my American ears it all sounds very southern. . .

valiumSingleton · 09/07/2010 10:16

What does that mean exactly!? I think that Southern names are ladylike and traditional..... better than names like Harper or Blair for girls. But it's hard to read these things from another continent.

FourLittleDucks · 09/07/2010 10:19

I really like it ! whether it is made up or not. Its not offensive or outlandish and she could easily go by either Anna or Beth in the future if she wants.

Wasn't there a character on West Wing called Annabeth?

I think it is pretty.
