So my friend is having a dd next week and loves the name Annabeth. I think it's a 'real' name but can't seem to find it in any baby books. She is worried that everyone will think it's horrible even though she loves it. So what do we all think?

I don't think that it is that unusual in the US - there is indeed a character in the West Wing called Annabeth, and the actress Annabeth Gish (also in the West Wing, can you tell I'm a fan!) also.

Quite unusual here I would think but not made up!

Its pretty

I once knew someone called Mayann - it sounded exotic, but really it was just 2 ordinary names pasted together

I think its pretty but also think it would be a pain to give over the phone, you'd get lots of post to Annabell and Anna Beth etc

I think I only like it as a pet name for someone called Anna Elizabeth or similar

Hedwig3 · 09/07/2010 13:12

If I heard this I would assume it had a hyphen.

SO if she doesn't like hyphenated names I think its a BAD idea!

I like it. Very pretty, and can be adapted in lots of ways.

letsblowthistacostand · 09/07/2010 13:18

I think it's lovely. Elegant but sweet, works for adult or child. Am going to put it on my list! (not that I'm having any more.)

On the subject of name mash-ups, I once knew someone called Leelamay. One granny was Leela and the other, May. She always went by her second name.

I don't care if it's made up or not (ALL names were "made up" originally, anyway).

It sounds quite sweet, I'd approve!

violetsmile · 09/07/2010 13:48

Great, mainly positive rsponses then which will please her no end. Thanks for the comments. I suppose all names were made up and invented at some point but it's nice to know it is usable. It has really grown on me and I am actually thinking it's really very pretty and quite classy, whereas at first I was thinking it was quite cute but mybe a bit too modern and flimsy sounding.

lol at Freyanna. In theory it's no more than Johanna or Susannah, but less is more sometimes!

LuluF · 09/07/2010 16:32

I think something as traditional as 'Edward' was a made up name at some point. Annabeth sounds pretty - a bit like it's from 'The Waltons', and she may always be correcting people.

mathanxiety · 09/07/2010 21:26

I like it a lot. I think adding a hyphen would make it look silly and just cause spelling problems. It's no different from Annabel really.

capucine · 11/07/2010 19:11

I love it.
It's also the friend of Percy Jackson, the film.

purpleduck · 12/07/2010 22:01

Yes! It is in Percy Jackson. And weirdly enough, it was just in a book that I read. Ok, it was the name of a boat, but still...
