too old fashioned?

I fell in love with the name Margot a few months ago but as birth gets closer I am having doubts. Trouble is I have no other names and dh is being useless!

I don't really like girly names and like the fact that Margot is quite strong sounding. We have a rather unique surname it goes with. I was thinking of having Amelie as a middle name (I love this name but feel there are too many around) which I thought might soften it.

My husband isn't a great fan as they pronounce it with a hard T where he is from. But from previous experience he will agree with my choice once he's seen me give birth!

Any name we have should preferably be French (family history reasons).

So what do you think? And if you hate it what would you suggest?

I knew someone who spelled it without the T. But I suppose you need to keep it French?

TBH the name grows to fit...Sandra Bullock is an unlikely old-fashioned name but she has a cool and fun image.

IngridFletcher · 26/06/2010 17:27

I know a 3 year old Margot.

diggingintheribs · 26/06/2010 17:30

Thanks for reply

Yes you're right. The name becomes the person. There are a few names I irrationally dislike because of people I knew with them so it works the other way too!

Lovely name.

thisisyesterday · 26/06/2010 17:40

Margot is a lovely name!
where is your husband from??? I can't imagine many places where they'd give it a hard t? and if people do then just correct them, they'll soon stop

diggingintheribs · 26/06/2010 18:12

Thanks for feedback! Glad it's positive!

Dh is german and to be honest they make a hash out of ds's name too but he corrects them now!

Dh doesn't actually have a german accent so he naturally says it the English/French way so no conflict there!

What do you think of amelie as a middle name? The alternatives are famil names danielle or erika.

emmyloo2 · 26/06/2010 18:34

I like Margot a lot. I think it's unusual but pretty. I prefer it to Danielle or Erika.

diggingintheribs · 26/06/2010 18:36

Oh I meant those two as middle name options.

I'm feeling much better about the choice and will be putting it back at the top of my list! Thank you!!!

Now I just need to get dh on board....

letsblowthistacostand · 26/06/2010 18:37

Love it, was on my (but sadly not DH's) shortlist. Could always call her Maggie as well, that would solve the hard T problem. Or spell it Margeaux but maybe that's too pretentious? Margot Amelie lovely as well.

mathanxiety · 26/06/2010 18:40

Margaux is an acceptable form of Margot that eliminates the T problem.

There's Greta too, as a form of Margaret..

Danielle is very 70s to me, and Erika also.

diggingintheribs · 26/06/2010 18:44

Nobody hates it yet!

Middle names are family ones so take your point that they are not very fashionable but I can look past that as they won't be used very often.

Greta is a bit too german - with our surname it would be a bit too much!

I really like the silent T in Margot so would keep that spelling (ds also has a silent letter in his name so I guess I just like being awkward!!)

I'm a huge 'Good Life' fan, so it def gets the thumbs up from me!

My friend's sister has chosen 2 lovely 'old fashioned' names for her dds - Martha and Elsie. All gorgeous. Go with it. x

Margot is quite cool I think. I'd prefer it with Amelia than Amelie, because I think the rhythm is better, but it depends on your surname as to what sounds best (bearing in mind that you usually only say/hear middle names when using the whole name).

FrameyMcFrame · 26/06/2010 19:29

my friend's sister is called Margot and I really like the name.
I also like Erika, but not sure if it works as a second name.

JaynieB · 26/06/2010 19:36

I'm going to go against the flow and say I'm not so keen on Margot.
I like Erika as a middle name and came across a very lovely French lady artist called Erica - we bought one of her prints, interestingly she pointed out that the heather on the print (it was a landscape) was 'erica' i.e her name - so just thought I'd add that that - Heather is an anglicised version of Erica/Erika.
My step sister is German/English and my Dad and his wife wanted a name that would 'work' both ways - they called her Anya which I think is nice.

diplodoris · 26/06/2010 21:19

Personally I'm not too keen on Margot, but it comes from Margaret, so how about Margaret or Margeurite as a full name? Then you can use Margot, Maggie, Daisy, Mags as nicknames.

Other suggestions

Lois
Esther
Martha
Lydia
Zoe
Sadie
Edith
Eloise
Norah
Miranda
Phoebe
Zara
Genevieve
Rowena
Sabrina
Talia
Vanessa

bigbluebump · 26/06/2010 21:55

I don't like Margot (pronounced Mar-gott) at all, I'm afraid. Sounds harsh and not very lady like to my ears.

Margaux, on the other hand, when pronounced in French is a little nicer.

diggingintheribs · 26/06/2010 22:06

i'd definitely pronounce it the French way with the silent T.

Thanks for the name suggestions - quite like martha and eloise although the latter clashes with my sons name. I really don't want a german name as our surname is clearly german - I also want the French and English lines represented!

I like short names that can't really be shortened so margaret is too much as there are too many variations

thanks for the feedback - I know people will have different opinions but it's nice that it's not 100% no!!

annasophia · 26/06/2010 22:08

Being German, I'd also pronounce Margot with a hard t.

jkklpu · 26/06/2010 22:09

I love it but prefer Margaux

mybootsaremuddy · 26/06/2010 22:36

Margot Emeile sounds lovely. Its strong yet pretty.

mopsyflopsy · 26/06/2010 22:39

I'd spell it Margaux too. Makes the pronounciation much easier.

Linnet · 26/06/2010 22:46

I would spell it Margo, my friend at work is Margo and spells it that way.

diggingintheribs · 26/06/2010 23:56

thanks for all the feedback - a lot more positive than I thought!
