What one is least pretentious?

OH loves Ophelia (the only name he has ever come up with and likes)

I like Tabitha and Portia but getting worried that the former sounds like a cat due to unhelpful friends. I don't want pretentious names but I can't help what I like.

So do I please myself or please the masses and opt for a less posh name. What one would you choose?

Tabitha is nice and not overly weird. Not sure about the others. Ophelia drowned in a river as I remember - not ideal.

seimum · 23/06/2010 23:26

I know a Tabitha, and she always gets called Tabs or Tabby.

I would prefer Ophelia (provided your surname is not Balls or similar).

Portia I associate with lawyers, (because of doing the Merchant of Venice at school)

MrsSawdust · 23/06/2010 23:31

Please yourself, not the masses.

I love Ophelia.

DilysPrice · 23/06/2010 23:34

Tabitha is nice, Portia is a tiny bit pretentious but OK, Ophelia is ill starred because of the evil bf who murders her father and the insanity and the drowning.

luciemule · 23/06/2010 23:45

Tabitha nice
Portia - bit pretentious but only because of stereotypes
Ophelia - beautiful. My french friend's little girl is called Ophelie (off-el-ee) and she's such a cute little poppet.
I think Ophelia is pretty/sexy/mature/cute/cool

Tidey · 23/06/2010 23:50

Ophelia is the nicest name from your list. Portia sounds incredibly posh and Tabitha is a cat's name.

diplodoris · 23/06/2010 23:52

My favourite of your choices is Ophelia

Tabitha does make me think of cats, I'm afraid. Portia sounds like a cross between a portion and a porter.

How about

Octavia
Aurelia
Cecelia
Penelope
Hermione

prayingforababy · 24/06/2010 08:36

Ophelia it is then...now for middle names!

Ophelia is the nicest name on your list. Not keen on the others.

iskra · 24/06/2010 15:58

I met a Portia at the playground the other day. Even my incredibly posh grandmother thought it was a bit much. I really like Ophelia though.

Hedwig3 · 24/06/2010 19:45

Tabitha.

People will get past the cat connection, I think many have already as the name is heard more and more on children.

LetThereBeRock · 24/06/2010 20:05

I hate Tabitha but love Portia and Ophelia.

LaDiDaDi · 24/06/2010 20:10

I like Portia.

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 24/06/2010 21:46

I really like Ophelia but would never use it myself because of the ill-starred connontations (I work in theatre)

Ophelia sounds lovely, but she came to a tragic end. Tabitha is my favourite of the three. Portia does just sound pretentious IMO.

DanJARMouse · 24/06/2010 22:15

Tabitha is the best one in my opinion

TheBolter · 24/06/2010 22:15

Tabitha is IMO least pretentious. A lovely name.

Dd2's name reminds people of puddle ducks but because I like it so much I really couldn't give a rat's arse!

Portia reminds me of a pig's name. Ophelia is nice but its connotations too tragic.

BessieBoots · 24/06/2010 22:18

Hmmm I like Ophelia best- Beautiful name- But I couldn't because she's too tragic.

MrsToffeeCrisp · 24/06/2010 22:19

Ophelia is lovely. The best of your list.

Magalyxyz · 24/06/2010 22:21

Tabitha because it's a cat's name.

I like Portia, but I'd rate it as being a little bit pretentious.

Ophelia is way too sad. Really patronising question, but have you actually studied Hamlet? I just find it hard to believe anybody who read the play would choose the name.

Portia is lovely. Choose that one.

annasophia · 24/06/2010 22:21

I like Portia.

Ophelia is ok but Offie is not a nice nickname.

Francagoestohollywood · 24/06/2010 22:21

Portia would remind me of John Cleese's daughter in A Fish called Wanda

I like Ophelia (though it is uber pretentious and has tragic connotations) and Tabitha.

KittyBigglesworth · 25/06/2010 18:25

I think Tabitha is set to be super popular so it will be perceived as less pretentious if it is heard most often.

Ophelia has tragic associations but that doesn't necessary mean you shouldn't consider it. I suppose some parents worry it will jinx the child whilst others couldn't care less.

Doesn't Portia mean pig? Portia de Rossi hasn't been hindered by it as an actress, though. I think there are a few actresses called Ophelia too. One in a film at the moment, is it 4-3-2-1?
