Me and DH have finally decided that our fave girls name is Sylvie (after lots of help on a previous thread)

We both love the name but the problem is our surname

Its one syllable beginning with S and yes it is the most popular english surname!

So give me your honest opinion, can we still have the name we love or is it a no no?

I think it works fine

alarkaspree · 23/06/2010 00:53

It's fine. Sylvia would work even better though.

secunda · 23/06/2010 00:55

I think Sylvie is prettier

cheekster · 23/06/2010 00:56

I know your right, Sylvia does sound better with our Surname, but I prefer Sylvie. Im not too keen on Sylvia.

Zadie Smith did alright out of having a similarly alliterative name (original name Sadie)! I like Sylvie better than Sylvia too.

seeker · 23/06/2010 06:54

Sylvia then call her Sylvie. Give her the choice.

diddl · 23/06/2010 08:06

I don´t think it sounds very good tbh.

That said, if you love it & really don´t want anything else-it´s not totally ridiculous.

SusanShocksOn · 23/06/2010 08:09

I love it - it sounds like a fashion designer or BBC reporters name. Rolls off the tongue nicely.

randomimposter · 23/06/2010 08:28

Think it's a good name, and definitely Sylvie not Sylvia IMO. Rolls better with Sm*th and sounds more modern and fresh.

And agree with susan it sounds funky and memorable.

belgo · 23/06/2010 08:31

Sounds fine to me.

KSal · 23/06/2010 08:40

i think its great - a classic french name but not popular like some. I think it sounds more contemporary and prettier than Sylvia (although I like Sylvia I think it's a little older generation)

also goes really well with your surname - alliterative names sound really strong to me.

think its a great name, and actually think it is a million times nicer than Sylvia, think Sylvia is a very old fashioned and boring name but somehow Sylvie sounds ultra cool and modern i love it

stressheaderic · 23/06/2010 09:16

Sylvie is a fab name, totally agree with posters above.
As a teacher, the children with alliterative names are def the ones I always learn first, and that stick in my mind.

Maybe give her a short middle name to balance out the alliteration, she doesn't have to use it but it's there if she wants it.
Sylvie Beth
Sylvie Kate
Sylvie Joy

RatherBeOnThePiste · 23/06/2010 09:19

Ds age 11 has a Sophie Smith in his class like the child in those books I think, and it seems to go well together. Its a similar combination to yours I think?!

Go for it!

BessieBoots · 23/06/2010 09:20

It's cool! Go for it!

HousewifeOfOrangeCounty · 23/06/2010 09:20

lovely.

diplodoris · 23/06/2010 09:24

Personally I prefer Sylvia, but I think Sylvie (surname) would be fine.

telsa · 23/06/2010 10:03

Sounds fine to me - reminds me of the poet Stevie Smith, which I always thought was a cool name.

frakkit · 23/06/2010 10:17

I like it.

Need to be careful with the middle name though - lots of unfortunate acronyms to be had.

NiceCuppaT · 23/06/2010 10:17

Silvie Smith sounds fine to me - Silvie is lovely, Silvia isn't lovely!!!

SirBoobAlot · 23/06/2010 10:18

I don't think t works, sorry.

vess · 23/06/2010 13:49

Sylvia better IMO.

Sal321 · 23/06/2010 14:17

I love it (and prefer it to Sylvia) - I have an alliterative name and it is great.

hellymelly · 23/06/2010 14:25

I really like it,I think it sounds great together ."Author Sylvie Smith talks about her latest work" "Dr Sylvie Smith gives a discussion on the function of the mitric valve"
"this is Sylvie Smith reporting from London"
All good!
