Frederick for a girl?

What do people think? I think Freddy is lovely as a shortening, and we don't like Frederica.

Ashbourne

stop having stupid ideas and call the child Emma

choccyp1g · 21/06/2010 12:42

I've got an Auntie Freda, whose name is in fact Elfreda.

BongoWinslow · 21/06/2010 12:48

I like Charley/Charlie for a girl, but not Charlotte or Charlene... so I figure no Charley/Charlie for me. That's just how it goes.

Same applies to Freddy, imo.

isthatporridgeinyourhair · 21/06/2010 13:10

No, just no.

bigbluebump · 21/06/2010 13:15

I have a very good French friend called Frederique. We normally call her Freddie for short.

But I'd definately use the feminine version, Frederique. Lovely name!

mopsyflopsy · 21/06/2010 13:18

I agree, Frederique is lovely, especially said with a french accent.

Lauriefairycake · 21/06/2010 13:20

You cannot call a girl Frederick

talk about giving a kid a complex before it's even started

FakePlasticTrees · 21/06/2010 13:21

go for it - it will be character building and teenagers need reasons to hate their parents.

mopsyflopsy · 21/06/2010 13:24

Frédérique

annasophia · 21/06/2010 13:35

In Germany, FRIEDERIKE (Pronounced: free-du-REE-kÉ™) is the female version of Frederick.

Quite like it, actually.

Terrible sorry!

jellybeans · 21/06/2010 13:44

No way!

CornflowerB · 21/06/2010 13:49

Why don't you get a cat and call it Frederick if you like the name so much and call your daughter a girl's name. And really, you know, Freddy is a boy's name too. This is a little person you know, who I'm sure you would prefer didn't get laughed at for her name. Life is hard enough.

annasophia · 21/06/2010 13:52

Where are you living/planning to live?

Because in many countries, Frederique/Friedericke are common, accepted girls' names, as is the short form Freddie.

OrigamiYoda · 21/06/2010 13:53

I have a friend called Fierenza we call her freddy for short. Much nicer IMO

gorionine · 21/06/2010 13:58

Mopsyflopsy, How do you manage to put accents on your "e"s? could you teach me?

MmeLindt · 21/06/2010 14:04

No. No. No.

Why would you do that to your DD?

Frederica, Frederique, Freda are ok, but Frederick. Just no.

drfox · 21/06/2010 14:05

Oh, dear God!

VuvuzelaPlenticlew · 21/06/2010 14:11

Frederique in other countries is not the equivalent of Frederick -- it's the equivalent of Frederica. So it does not in any way make this daft idea reasonable.

Sorry, OP, but I do think it is a daft idea and cannot really see why you would object to Frederica, but still consider naming your daughter Frederick. They're so similar and the nn you want comes fom both. So why do the "odd" thing -- just for the sake of it? Not sure your daughter would thank you for that!

Pingpong · 21/06/2010 14:11

Another no vote from me

VuvuzelaPlenticlew · 21/06/2010 14:12

Sorry, I guess I should have said "not only".

chipmonkey · 21/06/2010 14:41

This is not a serious thread, is it?
If I heard of a little girl by that name, I would assume her parents would have preferred a son.

rachel1970 · 21/06/2010 15:20

Yes to Frederique, Frederica, Frieda, Friedericke for a girl. Even yes to Freddie as a nickname for a girl.

But no to Frederick. Just looks too masculine.

mopsyflopsy · 21/06/2010 16:55

goriononine, I can't actually make the accents, I just copy them .
