Opinions on Xanthe

We are looking for a relatively unusual but recognisable name for DD3 due in the Autumn. She will more than likely have blonde hair so the meaning is pretty fitting.

I personally think it's a strong, interesting, feminine name, but maybe that's my pregnancy brain doing overtime!

Would appreciate any thoughts and opinions on the name Xanthe.

Many thanks.

Sorry, but I'm not sure how to pronounce this: Xan-teh, Xan-the, Xan-thee or Xan-tee?

Tootiredforgodtyping · 18/06/2010 11:28

I know a xanthe aged 3 and it realy suits her. She's blonde

Flighttattendant · 18/06/2010 11:29

I really like it.

Valinor · 18/06/2010 11:29

It's pronounced Zan-thee

I went to school with a Xanthe (pronounced Zanthee)

I wouldn't choose it myself, but quite like it.

annasophia · 18/06/2010 11:35

Yes, Zan-thee sounds nice.

Just bear in mind that some people might have difficulty with the pronounciation.

ticktockclock · 18/06/2010 11:35

I like unusual names so I like it over anything common.

Very nice.

Some people may have a few diffiuclties prouncing it when just seeing it written, but that's soon gotten over. ie all the Niamh's seem to manage.

It's lovely, we considered Iolanthe for DD as an alternative to Violet

One of my BF's daugher's is called Xanthe. I love the name.

Pasiphae · 18/06/2010 13:37

Lovely name.

LarkinSky · 18/06/2010 13:40

Very nice, feminine but not overly girly, will work well for an adult too.

Or there is Ianthe (pron. eye-ann-thee), or Iolanthe as AMNM mentioned: both of which mean 'violet flower/of the ocean, as she was the daughter of Oceanus in Greek mythology.

Eglu · 18/06/2010 13:43

I really like it. It is on consideration for our possible third child.

PestoEatsPasties · 18/06/2010 13:44

very lovely

diplodoris · 18/06/2010 17:07

Lovely name

ShowOfHands · 18/06/2010 17:09

It's lovely. I assume nearly everybody knows how it's pronounced. Maybe a wee bit in vogue right now but a beautiful name.

doubleexpresso · 18/06/2010 17:24

I LOVE Xanthe. Character in Barabara Pym novel. It's cool, classic and unusual. Go for it.

doubleexpresso · 18/06/2010 17:25

Or was the Pym character Ianthe? Also lovely.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 18/06/2010 17:25

Or Ianthe.

Hullygully · 18/06/2010 17:25

Soft and warm, yet almost warrior like. I see pansies studding a field of tall razor grass whilst eagles swoop and wildebesst contemplate.

foureleven · 18/06/2010 17:27

I love it but only if shes (prepares for flaming...) 'posh' -ish. IYKWIM

ShowOfHands · 18/06/2010 17:40

Hully are you writing an ode to your womanhood or thinking of naming babies?

aegeansky · 18/06/2010 23:28

Xanthe - it's a lovely name. But because of its literal meaning, it's ideal if DD is blonde!

Also, yup, can see a lot of flak over the spelling in some circles. Be prepared for people to sound the X -

'EXanthe' for exmaple, or to avoid trying to read the name if unfamiliar.
