Opinions on Xanthe

We are looking for a relatively unusual but recognisable name for DD3 due in the Autumn. She will more than likely have blonde hair so the meaning is pretty fitting.

I personally think it's a strong, interesting, feminine name, but maybe that's my pregnancy brain doing overtime!

Would appreciate any thoughts and opinions on the name Xanthe.

Many thanks.

Gorgeous!

Thanks for the feedback. Can't believe how positive it has been. I thought Xanthe was a marmite name and that there would be more negative responses.

I was slightly concerned over the pronunciation issue but BridesheadRegardless makes a good point in that all Niamhs seem to manage.

PMSL laughing at foureleven. Of course we are posh! Nah, not really but I do seem to like(as you prase it) 'posh-ish' names. Hadn't really considered Xanthe as posh but I suppose now you come to mention it.

I am drawn to Xanthe because I don't know anyone with that name to shape my opinion of it. Just suppose I wanted some reassurance that it isn't so unusual that it wouldn't work as name in real life and that there are actually Xanthes out there somewhere.

Thanks for the comments.

Absolutely awful.

I'd worry about Xanthe not being pronounced as you'd like it, especially if your dd decides to spend some time outside of England.

Any German/French/Spanish speaker would say something like X-an-te, with a harsh 't'.

I know a 4 year old Xanthe and think it is a lovely name.

Love it! My mum wanted to call me it and lost her nerve. While I do love my (more usual) name, I do have a bit of a pang I'm not a Xanthe!

Love it

I have a really common girls name and I've never met any none English person who can pronounce it - it's not a problem.

bigstripeytiger · 20/06/2010 21:29

zapostrophe I have also heard people say that it means 'golden'.

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 21/06/2010 20:51

love it, it's our front runner alongside Scarlet if we have a DD

funnily enough I 'discovered' it when DH kept banging on about wanting Xavier for a boy so he could call him X for short (geek weirdo what I married), but I actually love Xanthe and he has agreed it doesn't suit a girl to be called X as a nn

BodyMashIndex · 22/06/2010 22:26

I love it.
Seriously considered it for DD who was covered in yellow meconium when she was born. (Rather than the black stuff)
