I'm better with girl's names.

I've always loved the names Zaynab and Habiba.

Faria or Faariha (have seen it spelled both ways).

Maize · 18/06/2010 15:10

GladioliBuckets · 19/06/2010 16:45

Really not a tradition? My GCSE Religious Studies teacher must have been behind the times (and was a practising Christian andyway LOL.)

EricNorthmansmistress · 19/06/2010 20:29

My DS is Anwar which is gorgeous, means light. I love Merieme and Zahara for girls, Bilal or Zacariyya for boys. Would use any except merieme who is my SIL! And I think she might use Zacariyya for her DS when he arrives.

CoteDAzur · 20/06/2010 09:44

If anyone would like to see the Turkish version of these names with a slightly different spelling, let me know.

jonicomelately · 20/06/2010 09:51

I like mindysimmons' suggestions. They are beautiful.

CoteDAzur · 20/06/2010 09:53

Pooh - Whichever name you intend to choose, talk about it with a native speaker of Arabic. Some names that sound good to Anglophone ears could have pronunciations or nicknames with unpleasant meanings in Arabic, which you wouldn't necessarily pick up.

For example, Zinnira or Zinia could easily become "Zina" in the UK, which you wouldn't want your daughter called.

marmaladecat123 · 20/06/2010 13:41

Zahra is nice and Noor.

moirasings · 20/06/2010 23:58

I am Irish/Scottish and hubbie is Muslim. Would love some name ideas that work for both cultures. Any ideas?

strandedatsea · 21/06/2010 00:03

I love Maryam and other similar versions.

Firawla · 21/06/2010 12:23

people shouldnt make zinnira into nickname of zina cos that is really bad...
but that name is known in arabic its one of the early sahabiyat, so its okay 2 use, even tho the origin is roman (i think? cos this sahabia was roman, radhiyallahu anhaa)
obviously we hav 2 b careful tho not 2 give them inappropriate nicknames or let other ppl do that..

Loujalou · 21/06/2010 13:29

My friend has Zakira for a girl which is lovely. Zahra is a lovely girl's name and I also know of Hana.

bunny30 · 23/06/2010 12:45

Hi my hubby's name is Shohaib and pronounced "Show - hay - b " this is the name of a prophet and there are lots of variations of spelling and pronounciations not least because of the translation process between Arabic and English script. For a girl interesting but true - "Lucy" is also an arabic name! It is not common, but definitely used in Egypt. There is lots of crossover of the history books and characters between the Bible, Talmud and the Qu'ran if you are looking for a name that fits with different cultures. Eg; Ibrahim/Abraham, Ishmael, Mary/Maryam, Adam etc.

Tasala · 26/06/2010 13:58

There is no scripture that deems that you must use an arabic name so you can call him/her a british name as long as the meaning is good. But if you are intent on using a name with religious importance then the Quran reads that 'Abdul (or Abder) Rahman' is the name favoured by Allah for a male.

Kathleen123 · 28/06/2010 12:18

Girls names:

Laila
Maryam
Zahra

Boys names:

Samir

alexandre · 28/06/2010 13:22

Don't think anyone has mentioned Yamina. Love that together with Amira, Zahra and Kheira for girls.

Firawla · 28/06/2010 20:17

^ thats not in Quran its hadith that the 2 most favoured names Abdullah and Abdurrahman, truest are harith and hammam and worst harb and murrah

KittyBigglesworth · 29/06/2010 00:13

I like Habiba and Hala as girls' names and Baha, Ishmail and Mustafa as boys' names.

GIRLS

strangely enough we started with a liking of Mia or Mya too...I have been repeatedly told by Arabic friends that there is a meaning behind it, and it is an Islamic (Arabic) name in it's own right...but I couldn't find a meaning and so was never comfortable with it. So if you have better luck it may just be a name for you...

others...

Lamia
Ayah
Leyla (but so common now)
Aisha
Lamar
Somayya
Samia
Saffiya
Amal
Talia
Maha
Zahra
Aminah
Hiba
Mariam
Reem or Reema
Magda
Rasha
Rania
Amani
Jude
Leena
Lana

I think most of those names work well in english too, that may not matter to you, but if you are a british convert (like me), you'll probably want a name that Gran and Grandpa can say and that translates well to the playground!

Those'll do for now...but there are loads more if you want them!...getting quite clucky now...lurve baby names!

mixedmamameansbusiness · 29/06/2010 16:35

Just found out i am expecting so have noted down the suggestions I like. Thanks ladies.

CotedAzur are you Turkish and have we spoken befor?

BTW my name has featured in almost all the lists and I always disliked it for beign rather old fashioned.
