I love it. Unusual but not pretentious, charming for a DS and endearing for a man. Anyone else?

I thought of Jeremy Bamber too. These murderers' names always stick in my head, decades on. Maybe that's a bit odd..

swanandduck · 09/06/2010 13:27

Sorry, but Bamber definitely fails the 'shouting across the playground' test, as does Atticus.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 09/06/2010 13:29

I think of (in order)

  1. Jeremy Bamber (not good association with baby son)
  2. Bamber Gascoigne (nice chap but a bit bland?)
  3. Bambi
  4. Jamie Bamber (which is a good association, but does only come in at #4)

All your other choices are good, though. I think Eden would get some gender confusion but there are male Edens.

meadowlarks · 09/06/2010 14:14

Hedwig3 - I like your style

swanandduck - Fair enough, but Atticus is fairly popular now so I think you're in the minority.

Professor - I think, ultimately, you stop associating other people with a child when you realise they're their own person. But thank you for your thoughts. I'm wavering on Eden because of the gender issue, but there were 70 born last year so it's clearly not totally out there.

Well, the fact it's got this backlash and I still really like it must mean it's passed the not foiled by mumsnet test with flying colours. I'd be sad if I regretted not going with one I really do like, after all.

Bamber?? You may as well start bullying the child now and be done with it.

noshouting · 09/06/2010 21:25

Are you really properly posh OP cos if you are it's fine

meadowlarks · 09/06/2010 21:54

SD - Most kids are open-minded, it's the parents that aren't. My school had plenty of unusual named-people and most of them were the popular kids.

noshouting - No, I'm not. I don't see why all untrendy names are branded posh. Posh would be something like Octavius or Percival, Bamber's not really in the same league, IMO. I've never met a posh person called Bamber, or anyone else for that matter, which is why the connection doesn't exist, to me.

ML, just get a grip and call the child Bamber if you wish. You obv want to. What does it matter what anyone else thinks

Clary · 10/06/2010 00:39

I explained to DH why Atticus is so very popular on MN. I btw also love the book but have never met anyone called Atticus, so I am not sure I would call it "fairly popular" (I know a lot of children).

DH says it sounds like a brand of loft ladders

Anywa, Bamber makes me think of University Challenge, but I guess there I am showin gmy age

Agree OP you call yr DS Bamber if you like. Tho of the names you mention I like Ted the best.

meadowlarks · 10/06/2010 11:45

Clary - Loft ladders = lol. Well, I may well change my mind, but for the moment it's still on the list. I just wanted to see whether overwhelmingly negative opinions would change mine, but it hasn't so far, so I must really like it. I still love Teddy/Ted, Eden and Atticus as well so I'm by no means decided.

"Most kids are open-minded"

Oh, right. Clearly I imagined being teased mercilessly as a child for having a stupid name.

funnysinthegarden · 11/06/2010 22:19

so who is soupy?

PosyPetrovaPauline · 11/06/2010 22:26

it's bull about kids being bullied because of their name
this is 2010 in multicultural Britain - Poonam sits next to Poppy who is next to Paddy and no one laughs they just get on with it

Narrow minded ness creates discrimination which creates bullying

scottishmummy · 11/06/2010 22:37

kids always tease about names.part of growing up.friends dd got teased ploppy poppy.kidding yourself on if you think kids dont tease

funnysinthegarden · 12/06/2010 00:28
