What is it with people misspelling names?

Sorry but I just have to ask this - I have seen so many threads on here from people thinking a popular / common name gets more interesting from spelling the name in a weird way. Zarah instead of Sarah, Izabella instead of Isabella, Clauhdia instead of Claudia - what is it with you? People???

well I believe the Zarah and Izabella are both perfectly legtimate "foreign" spellings of those names.......

scurryfunge · 07/06/2010 20:48

Every name is probably a corruption of something else...I wouldn't get too hung up on it.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 07/06/2010 20:49

It's being you-neeq, innit.

Its just that isn't it? The parents can't spell.

bebemoohatessnot · 07/06/2010 20:52

My Moo almost was a Kaja (Kaya) until dh and I decided that she'd forever be saying 'it's a Y sound not a J sound'

usualsuspect · 07/06/2010 20:52

I think you can spell names however you like really

Bacofoil · 07/06/2010 20:52

I have to spell my name for people. It's a pain in the arse.

Call yer kid John or Jane and don't fuck about with the alphabet.

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 07/06/2010 20:54

Oh but Bacofoil, the registrar when we went to register DS2 told us she'd had a Johhhn being registered recently....

Apparently they didn't want anyone else to have the same name in his class at school Wouldn't just one extra h have done the trick? Why two?

Jane has been spelled with the y variation for donkey's years.

kizzibear · 07/06/2010 21:45

I HATE Elle for Ellie. why would you spell it Elle? Are people that thick? Elle is a different name and shouldn't be pronounced as Ellie.

kizzibear · 07/06/2010 21:45

(I'll have the hard hat when its finished with...)

mojomama · 07/06/2010 21:53

just pause before you get your judey pants on there as, in my DS's case, it's a reflection of his culture, but a more "commonly" (you might say, "normal") spelt version is also popular. i hate to think you might judge my litle boy because your imagination doesn't stretch that far. also, fwiw, my name is so-called mis-spelt as it isn't English but a similar version from "abroad" - it hasn't bothered me growing up having it mis-spelt and people often tell me it's lovely.

Schulte · 07/06/2010 21:56

Well mojomama I am not that narrow minded, being a foreigner myself

I am glad people agree with me

And as for Johhhn... WTF??? Why haven't you told us this before?

OP posts:
kizzibear · 07/06/2010 21:58

I think there is nothing wrong with 'mispelt' names, for example Jane or Jayne, they can still be pronounced the same, or Rachel and Rachael, are still read as the same (although I prefer it spelt as Rachel)

As long as the way the name sounds can still be recognisable and readable, who cares? Its not your child.

BUT YES when names such as ELLE which is pronounced as it looks is meant to be read as Ell-ie you can't blame parents/teachers/family for being confused or wandering what was going on in the parents head.

toccatanfudge · 07/06/2010 22:05

well personally I can't abide the way that names such as Rebekah, Shmuel and others are now "mis-spelled" and used in this country - tsk

SE13Mummy · 07/06/2010 22:43

I one encountered a 'Jhon' but, on closer examination it turned out to be a rather poor forgery of a parent's signature but a rather embarrassed 9-year-old

And sometimes they're just trolls wanting us all to argue.

beanlet · 07/06/2010 23:07

My name is legitimately spelled (and has been since doomsday) about 6 different ways. Sometimes, people just choose a less familiar or foreign-language spelling.

That being said, there's no excuse for Johhhn. . .

Bacofoil · 08/06/2010 12:30

I've added to the baby name thingy

bebemoohatessnot · 08/06/2010 12:40

Bacofoil

runnybottom · 08/06/2010 12:43

There is a big difference between mispelling names either stupidly accidentally or on purpose, and proper alternative/foreign/whatever names.

Elle is not Ellie. As for Johhhhhhn, they should have been arrested for that one!
