I neither dislike/like these names but a friend of mine is considering all of these for her son due next month. Why do so many people hate these names, she asked my opinion but I said I wasn't sure, but had got the impression from mumsnet in the past that these names should be avoided??

I don't like the names, or the sounds of them (or Aiden for that matter) - but here in Australia I already know 3 Jaidens and 2 Aidens. No Caidens yet and the only Hayden I know is the brother of a friend of mine who is in no way "chavvy".
All the Jaidens/Aidens I know are under 5, btw. They're very popular boys' names around here (not chavvy either)

Flight..do you tell your children to only make friends with children with nice names

Flighttattendant · 16/09/2010 08:05

No no of course not.

But there are schools here where nearly every class has all these names in it and schools where there's hardly anyone with any of these names.

It's really strange.

I'm not trying to say everyone who likes those names is a certain type of person. But there is that moment when you introduce your child and say its name and some people just look at you, or say 'well he can use his middle name can't he' or just laugh.

You know then that they are not going to become your best mate.

And vice versa though I would not laugh of course, or any of the above. I would say 'Oh lovely'.

Seems like Jayden is very popular with uneducated teenage mothers which kinda puts me off. Snobby but there is my honest answer.

Good lord I had no idea people could be so rude and judgemental about someone elses name, a childs name no less. Its fine to not like a name, if you dont like it dont chose it for your own off-spring, but the stereotyping and class judgements being made here are downright ugly.

There are PLENTY of upper / middle class children with unique and/or classic names that are badly behaved with no manners. Its not their name that leads to this its poor parenting, which is not class dependent.

The only Hayden I knew was a young work colleague with a degree in Physics and was a really nice guy.

They sound directly imported from the USA. Let them stay there!

CDMforever · 16/09/2010 21:59

Yes they do sound very american and highly chavvy IMO. When I say chavvy I mean, er, common.
