Yes I know Ellie's are ten a penny but I like it - what can it be short for?

I like long names with nick names, like Ellie as a nickname.

Tryng to think of long versions and only have:

  • Eleanor
  • Ellinor
  • Eloise

What else is there?

Thanks.

Thanks all,

Sorry I should say that DD's middle name is Elizabeth so that and iterations of it are out!

Can I ask, do you pronounce Eleanor:

Elle-an-ah or Ell-an-or?

I think I prefer it with an or sound at the end but don't think it's actually pronounced like that.

DH's cousin's little girl is called Ellie in its own right. She is named after her great-grandmother Eleanor, but her parents preferred Ellie and so went with it.

The only other name which springs to mind at the moment is Elodie. Elise is lovely.

5DollarShake · 01/06/2010 09:30

I would pronounce Eleanor - ell-an-or. I think all the Eleanor's I've known have pronounced it like that.

withorwithoutyou · 01/06/2010 09:33

Thanks 5dollar, that's how I like it pronounced.

But then I keep thinking of Eleanor Rigby, which I don't pronounce like that.

I prefer Eleanor to Ellinor but I think the emphasis is definitely on the or with the second spelling.

I think Eleanor is beautiful & nice for your DD to have a longer formal name too.

If you're not keen on that, Ellen can also be shortened to Ellie.

withorwithoutyou · 01/06/2010 09:58

Or should it be Elinor?

Gah!

Thanks mummyneedschoc but I'm really not that keen on Ellen, I think that's why I don't like they Elle-an-ah pronunciation.

I have a stepdaughter Ellesse who we call Ellie and I also have a DD called Ellie....i also have a female cousin called Ellis who gets called Ellie.

personally i like Ellie as a name by itself as don't see the point in having a name for a child that never gets used!

withorwithoutyou · 01/06/2010 10:22

Elenora is nice!

Quite like Elodie but DH doesn't.

Boodle DD has a long name and a nn and we use both of them. I also like the fact that she can use a more formal version of her name at work if she wants to (which is what I do with my name).

Thank you everyone.

I'm thinking Ellinor might be the front runner but don't know whether to spell it with one L or two..

helyg · 01/06/2010 14:43

My friend's daughter is called Elisender, shortened to Elli.

I think it is Spanish in origin, as her DH is Spanish.

helyg · 01/06/2010 14:44

(Think it is actually spelt Elisenda now I look at it )

capstone · 01/06/2010 14:47

I'd spell it Elinor. Don't think the extra l adds anything really.

iamreallysilly · 01/06/2010 14:52

Eleanor, wouldn't spell it Elinor cos although pronounced the same way your dd will constantly have to say 'its spelled elinor' throughout her life! Don't make things harder than they need to be (i have a name that sounds diff to how its spelled/spelt? and am always having to spell it as well as say it, its a pain)

withorwithoutyou · 01/06/2010 14:56

See I don't want something complicated to spell, but I don't like the Elle-an-ah pronunciation and wouldn't want people to use it.

I remember now this is why we steered clear of it with DD1!

Ok.

So, it's between Elinor and have people not be able to spell it, or Eleanor and have people not pronounce it how we like.

Elinore?

iamreallysilly · 01/06/2010 15:57

Haven't heard of Eleanor being pronounced in a way other than Ell-en-or. Is it regional?

withorwithoutyou · 01/06/2010 16:08

I have no idea if it's regional.

Just did a search on here and there is a whole thread on it being pronounced those two different ways.
