Yes I know Ellie's are ten a penny but I like it - what can it be short for?

I like long names with nick names, like Ellie as a nickname.

Tryng to think of long versions and only have:

  • Eleanor
  • Ellinor
  • Eloise

What else is there?

Thanks.

there's a n Elinor on MN and she said it's the correct english version of the name.

i think Eleanor is from the french.
(and i would say Ell-en-er)

Hmmm..just realised Elle-ah-nor pronunciation doesn't go very well with our surname!

Maybe Eleanor then.

I'm so confused now.

Eleanor is pronounded Ell-a-nor. Well in our family it is.

I know an Elena aged 6 with nn Ellie

Stinkyfeet · 01/06/2010 22:35

This may seem a bit random, but have you thought about Helen? A lot of the El... names are derived from Helen and I reckon you could get away with Ellie as a nn.

Fleecy · 01/06/2010 22:41

I'm Elinor (pronounced with an 'in' sound) and have always had to spell my name but I don't mind. I really haven't found it that big a deal! And I prefer my spelling to Eleanor.

patchj76 · 01/06/2010 22:42

Prunella? We're thinking of using Ellie or Ella as a nickname

minxofmancunia · 01/06/2010 22:49

Eleni?

One of dds friends has this name, it's Greek I think v pretty.

Helena
Else
Elouise
Elspeth

MrsSchadenfreude · 01/06/2010 22:59

I know an Ellie and it's short for Annabella. Which strikes me as a bit odd, frankly.

roundabout1 · 01/06/2010 23:06

I know an Electra who is called Ellie.

boodleboot · 02/06/2010 08:20

i would vote for Eliana i think out of all these suggestions....that is very pretty (ellie-anna pronounciation)

LadyThompson · 02/06/2010 13:04

What about Eluned? It's Welsh, and very pretty imo.

Also not mentioned (I don't think) are:

Electra
Elmira
Elvira

I have an Eleanor; we pronounce it Elean-uh but many people in my region pronounce it Elean-or. Must also point out that people can't spell it at all even though we've gone for the easier way!
If you're shortening it to Ellie from the outset, don't worry too much.
