Forgot this one on my list of boys names!
WHat do you think?
I think Bernie would fit in well with the Berties, Archies and Albies.
And Bernard is a good strong boys name for when babe is older.

Is it a bit weird in a sibset with very OT names though?

Would love opinions.

It's awful.Truly terrible I'm afraid.

There's a song by The Lancashire Hotpots called Uncle Bernard. That is all I can think of if I hear the name

Not Now.

Not Ever.

NellieTheEllie · 01/06/2010 00:29

really not.
sorry

mathanxiety · 01/06/2010 03:55

Barnabus or Barnaby sound much more hip than Bernard, and they fit in better with OT sibling names than Bernard would, imo.

I wouldn't really put Bernard in the same category as other old man names. The other old man names you mention have crisp sounds; Bernie is too soft. I think it's the RN combination that does it in.

But Bernard Cribbins is cool.

SantaClaragirl · 01/06/2010 03:58

Not now Bernard

Monkeytoo · 01/06/2010 04:02

We had a cat called Bernard - he was a foster cat but we didn't call him that. Because we're in the US it was pronounced Buh-naarrd which always made me smile.

That aside... not sure about Bernard but Bernie is cute.

Monkeytoo · 01/06/2010 04:03

But.. it will only take a few cool Bernards to change the perception too - same as Alfred I think.

tortoiseonthehalfshell · 01/06/2010 04:48

I love it. I think of 'Not now Bernard' first thing, but that's not necessarily a bad thing - means your son will have a whole famous book written about him.

Just no

BrigitBigKnickers · 01/06/2010 09:04

Oh dear- sorry but no- this was the joke name we gave my bump when I was pregnant with DD1!

Bernard is one of those names that conjures up an image of a man with a big bushy beard!

TheGashlycrumbTinies · 01/06/2010 09:18

Yes Nursie, Berrnerrrd.

pixiestix · 01/06/2010 09:21

Oh god, no!

Sorry.

Shaz10 · 01/06/2010 09:22

LOL at Nursie. "Shut up, Bernard"

jamaisjedors · 01/06/2010 09:22

pmsl at show of hands.

stainesmassif · 01/06/2010 09:23

bernard sumner. very cool. i like it.

5DollarShake · 01/06/2010 09:36

OMG - Nursie - I'd forgotten that!

I'm also reminded of the mustachioed Bernard on 4 Weddings who was a bit of a drip.

It's definitely not to my taste, but none of the old man names are - and I do agree that it would only take one or two before all the people who do like old man names starting running with it.

luciemule · 01/06/2010 09:40

I always think you need to choose a name that suits all ages (cute baby/child/teenager/young man/older man/old man). If you can imgagine your 20 year old son about to spend a sexy night with his girlfriend calling him whatever name you choose, then it's a go-er.

5DollarShake · 01/06/2010 09:48

Hmm, I have to say, that was not one of the considerations when choosing DS's name!

I do very much agree though, that it has to be a name suitable for an adult as well as a baby.

luciemule · 01/06/2010 09:58

You know what I mean though - it's got to be a name suitable for all occasions.
I think perhaps Bernard sounds better said in french or with an American accent than how Nursie said it!

luciemule · 01/06/2010 10:03

I didn't mean imagine him having sex!!!
