Halcyon and Octavia for my twin girls

newtwinmummy · 31/05/2010 13:43

I'm expecting non identical girl twins in September.

What do you think of the names Halcyon and Octavia? I know they are rare names and not everyone will like them.

Any ideas for middle names? I have to include Joan as a family name or something like this.

OP posts:

expatinscotland · 31/05/2010 20:30

and it's a dangerous drug, halcyon.

missmoopy · 31/05/2010 20:33

the drug is halcion, not halcyon

bourboncreme · 31/05/2010 20:36

This has to be a wind up ,Halcyon pronounced Hal cee ah nee .

For what it is worth I don't mind Octavia ,although I would'd use it myself,Halcyon ,not a name ,if you want to pronounce it the way you have suggested you need to go with Alcyone which is pronounced with an e sound at the end

MNHubbie · 31/05/2010 21:42

Jeez some of you know how to belabour a point don't you. As has been said it is one thing to say what you think and it is another to be downright rude. You've said you don't like it and why, move on.

OP: Octavia Joan you mentioned before and saying it out loud it does work.

Halcyon, Hal or Hallie to her friends is definitely growing on me. Ignore the naysayers they are your children and as long as you feel the names suit them then go for it.

scottishmummy · 31/05/2010 21:58

thats the rub ask for opinion, expect to get it.to maintain interest add a funky mispronunciation and yes that will rack uo the posts

oh and how very woolly to say call your children what ever and ignore nay sayers

really no sniggering then at princess tiaamii ,shardonnay, lambrini

oh come off it

a silly name is burdensome and likely to cause your child botheration

GetOrfMoiLand · 31/05/2010 22:10

I had no idea that Halcyon was a name of a drug (am not jenned up on my knowledge of 70s opiates) but still the whole daft name conjures up a chill-out bar in Ibiza run by a bloke from Penge called Nigel whose heyday was the late 80s (where he was probably geed up to the eyeballs).

And Octvavia - means 8th, so unless you have an association with the number 8 is rather pointless. Like calling your daughter June when she is born at Christmas.

There are loads of lovely names available without resporting to those which means (a) drugs or (b) aspires to the pretention of using a classical name but can't count.

Wjat about Ophelia and Hera?

sedgiebaby · 31/05/2010 22:15

I just love the way the anonymity of the internet its message boards, brings out this ignorantly expressed rudeness, which is cloaked as an 'honest reaction which was, after all invited' How interesting to see the british at their cynical and discourteous best! newtwinmummy, I don't know who you are, but I somehow feel compelled to apologise.

pickler · 31/05/2010 22:23

Totally agree that the names make you seem like you want to up your social status. They're quite naff really.

MsHighwater · 31/05/2010 22:24

sedgiebaby, it's true that some posters have been a bit harsh but the OP did ask what people thought and, my goodness, she has been told. Hopefully, she will now have some taste of what the people who would meet her "uniquely" named dd's would be thinking when told their names. If she goes ahead it will, at least, not be in ignorance of that.

GillyBoot · 31/05/2010 22:29

I think it was the posters who posted not once to say they didn't like the name, but several times.

I'm not surprised the OP hasn't returned.

My opinion for what it's worth is that Octavia is too class-tied for me and Halcyon is too unusual and bizarre and I wouldn't know how to pronounce it. Sorry.

MNHubbie · 31/05/2010 22:30

TBH how do you know she is seeking to up her social status, for all any of us know she may be in a social group where names like these are common.

And whilst I would snigger at "princess tiaamii ,shardonnay, lambrini" I would not go on and on about it over and over belabouring the point to try to twist the knife on the OP as some are...

scottishmummy · 31/05/2010 22:33

i do believe thats how mn works.an op and multiple responses. my very gosh same people post more than once....and?

only got 111 posts not exactly rockin off the mn richter scale is it

MNHubbie · 31/05/2010 22:41

Stating an honest opinion once is stating that opinion. Repeatedly banging on and on about it is a different matter. Someone who does that sounds like they have an axe to grind or has a personal issue with the OP.

Responding a number of times is very different to repeatedly restating the same point.

TotallyWipedout · 31/05/2010 22:49

Exactly, MNHubbie. I had no idea that Halcyon was a drug, and even if it is, so what? As for Octavia: it is just a lovely name, and makes a change from Tabitha/Hebe - which are also nice, but there are quite a lot of them around at the moment.

If I had another DD, I'd call her Hephzibah (Eppie for short) with Hortensia as her twin sister. They would go perfectly with my existing children's names (which would undoubtedly be slated on MN as poncetastic and trying-too-hard, regardless of the fact that they are in classes full of children with poncetastic names so fit in perfectly ).

scottishmummy · 31/05/2010 22:49

kind of much as you are now?the collective opinion most certainly wasnt good.same themes came up from most posters

  • skoda car
  • benzo drug

and your point is what.edit/limit number of points posts.do you wish to see this across all mn or just babynames

traipse across other threads and tbh mostly same thing goes on,there is nothing unique or so different about tone and contributions to this thread

in fact its pretty tame with 116posts.as i said hardly rockin the mn Richter scale

i imagine it has high ouch factor for op.but then again on internet people honestly will say what they think

expect maybe thats why she asked- to garner opinion

MNHubbie · 31/05/2010 23:03

No it is normal for folks to fail to read what others have posted and the same themes to come up. When the same person keeps on posting the same thing that is more akin to bullying.

Also when someone makes a general point about politeness without naming any names and is responded to with insults and sarcasm it really doesn't show the respondent in the best light.

scottishmummy · 31/05/2010 23:07

your hints/inferences are too vague what are you on about man?

MNHubbie · 31/05/2010 23:40

I was being polite not vague. I have been very clear and will not pander to your ego any further as you are clearly attention seeking.

AbFabT · 31/05/2010 23:59

I don't get this gripe that the OP/child must have an affiliation to the number eight to be able to use Octavia. Millions of people call their son Thomas - we don't bang on about him needing to be a twin, do we?!
Anyway, they are due in September - being twins, high possibility of being early and thus born in the eighth month, August.

Ooh, OP, what about Octavia and Augusta!

As for words that are used as names, there are PLENTY of names that double up as words, but they are still used:

Mark (dirty stain/mark my words), John (toilet), Lou (loo - toilet), Will (left behind by dead relative/will he won't he), Bill (dollar bill), Cliff (rock exposure), Kurt (curt - precise), Peter (to peter out), Dick (ahem), Matt (small carpet), Jack (lever up a car), Abi (abbey - monastery), Gail (gale - wind), Sue (take to court), Dawn (morning), Di (die - expire), Neil (kneel - get down on knees), Rob (steal), Toby (mug), Jim (gym - exercise place), Barney (argue), Carol (Christmas song), Grace (prayer said before a meal), Scott (get off scott-free), Dom (dominatrix). Etc etc!

I prefer the names OP has come up with to many of the other ones I see here.

Well, I can see it for a boat...

GillyBoot · 01/06/2010 01:05

Aren't both twins named after the boat, Hallie and Annie?

mathanxiety · 01/06/2010 15:04
winkle2 · 01/06/2010 15:57

I dont like either name to be honest.

Never heard of Halcyon and Octavia is extremely posh.

If you like Halcyon why not have Halle - like Halle Berry? Halle Joan could work too?

If you like 'O' names what about Olivia Joan or Ophelia Joan?

TotallyWipedout · 01/06/2010 18:24

Olivia is only the most used name on the planet... unlike Octavia, methinks...
