Sophie or Sophia?

After months of disagreeing on names and with less than 2 weeks to go, DH and I have finally come down to Sophie or Sophia. I realize that one letter really shouldn't make that much difference but one of us really wants one and one the other! Please help us decide.

Also, middle names - we have Erin and Elisa/Eliza, which do you think goes best with which first name?

Sophia is so much nicer than Sophie, imo.
Sophia Elisa would be my choice.
(or even Sophia Elise)

nooka · 27/05/2010 05:15

I wouldn't have two names ending in an "a" sound personally. So Sophie Elisa/Eliza or Sophia Erin I think.

SillyTillyBilly · 27/05/2010 07:10

I much prefer Sophia (and gives you the option of Sophie as a nn) but when it runs into a vowel for a middle name either Erin or Eliza, Sophie does sound better (but how often do you say your full name?)

StealthPolarBear · 27/05/2010 07:15

i prefer sophie

dannas · 27/05/2010 08:52

Sophie is far more timeless, sophisticated and naturally pretty than Sophia in my opinion. Sophie all the way!

sapell3 · 27/05/2010 09:44

Sophia Elise

autodidact · 27/05/2010 09:48

Sophie

GetOrfMoiLand · 27/05/2010 09:51

Sophia is far nicer than Sophie, which is a meh name (mother of a Sophia).

It is more classic i think. And euphonically prettier (imho of course).

I wouldn't have a name ending in a leading into another name beginning with a vowel, it sounds disjointed.

dannas · 27/05/2010 10:03

Sophie has more of a vintage feel whereas Sophia feels more modern.

misdee · 27/05/2010 10:05

Sophie.

Sophie Erin

my Sophie is Sophie Emily

Hedwig3 · 27/05/2010 10:10

Sophia Erin.

withorwithoutyou · 27/05/2010 10:12

Sophia.

Am seriously considering this for DD2 due in 5 weeks.

Can I just ask if there is a variation in how people pronounce it? Cos that's the only thing that puts me off.

I would pronounce it soh-fee-ya but have heard it said suh-fi-yah.

LouMacca · 27/05/2010 10:42

Sophie Eliza sounds absolutely lovely

GetOrfMoiLand · 27/05/2010 10:48

With - a surprising amount of people call me dd so-fye-a, as opposed to so-fee-a, which is how I pronounce it.

It doesn't really matter. It does piss me off when people call her Sophie, though (yes, i am looking at you MIL, dd is 14 so you have had enough time to fathom out there is an a on the end of her name )

withorwithoutyou · 27/05/2010 10:56

Thanks getorf.

Sorry to hijack but is it quite a popular name? Doesn't really bother me as DD's name is in the top ten and the other name we're considering is Isabella which everyone on here is always slagging off for being popular.

But I just wondered.

mo3g · 27/05/2010 11:00

Sophie is far nicer than sophia imo a really beautiful name.

boodleboot · 27/05/2010 11:33

i too am deliberating Sophia but am unsure as to whether or not to spell it Sophia/Sofia or go for slightly different name and have Saffia.....

so really i am no help at all to you other than to say definitely not Sophie....

GetOrfMoiLand · 27/05/2010 12:02

All you Sophie lovers are wrong

I think Sophie is v common popular, Sophia less so, though I think it is gaining in popularity. I don't think it will become ubiquitous like Evie/Isabella/whatever.

I like lots of names which sound similar to Sophia

Saffron
Safrane
Zaphia
Seraphina
Can't think of any more but there are loads

Pinner35 · 27/05/2010 12:04

I too have a Sophie Emily......a v beautiful name IMO. I liked Sophia too, but DH said it sounded too "up itself".

FranSanDisco · 27/05/2010 12:11

Sophia is trying tooooo hard - much prefer Sophie. Sophie Erin sounds lovely.

estya · 27/05/2010 12:21

Sophie is more classic. Pretty in a natural way.
Unless you are Greek in which case you probably see it the other way round.

thumbwitch · 27/05/2010 14:00

I always thought of Sophie as being the short form of Sophia, for people who couldn't be bothered to say the whole name.

Doubtless not the case, that's just how it feels to me. Sophie just sounds like a nn.

Rubena · 27/05/2010 14:24

Sophie Erin

4andnotout · 27/05/2010 14:26

I'm a Sophie and it is much nicer than Sophia. Fact.

KittyTwoShoes · 27/05/2010 14:33

I love the name Sophie. Not such a fan of Sophia really.
