Sophie or Sophia?

After months of disagreeing on names and with less than 2 weeks to go, DH and I have finally come down to Sophie or Sophia. I realize that one letter really shouldn't make that much difference but one of us really wants one and one the other! Please help us decide.

Also, middle names - we have Erin and Elisa/Eliza, which do you think goes best with which first name?

I opted for Sophie and I don't think its common. There are two is my dd's school of 300 children. Although I like Sophia too.

dannas · 27/05/2010 16:21

Sophia is a bit current (slightly celeby feel) and sounds weak. Sophie much stronger and much classier IMO.

PorridgeBrain · 27/05/2010 16:23

Thanks for all your input - am still just as confused though . We still have a couple of weeks to decide hopefully!

I prefer Sophie. But actually, if you're concerned about Sophie's popularity what about Sadie, Susie or Sylvie?

Sophia is nice, but I just think Sophie is simpler, and better for that. Never sur whether to say Sew fee a or soff ee ya, or even soffya

MagalyZz · 27/05/2010 16:34

Just seen your middle names. I agree about having one name ending in a.

I prefer Eliza to Erin as well, so Sophie Eliza is lovely.

dannas · 27/05/2010 16:40

Sophie is simple like Alice.

Sophia is like Alicia. Then you get the dodgy versions like Sophier/saphire (like Allysia et al)

Sophie faaaaar better!!!!!

Alaro · 27/05/2010 16:43

Another vote for Sophia.

sassysass · 27/05/2010 17:52

I think Sophie if she's blonde and Sophia if she's dark.

thumbwitch · 27/05/2010 18:04

Actually, I think sassysass has a very good idea there.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 27/05/2010 18:09

Neither. Both are far to common. (as in too many of them about not chav common)

Purplebuns · 27/05/2010 18:13

Well my Sophie is blonde!

Geraldine7 · 27/05/2010 19:34

My daughter's Sofia but, despite my protestations, gets called Sophie all the time anyway...

nooka · 28/05/2010 04:08

I would have thought Sophia was pronounced soph-i-a not soph-ee-a. My aunt is Sophia, but always known as Sophy. she gets very peeved when people write Sophie. Sophie is apparently the French form of Sophia (other variants include Sofia and Sofya).

imahappycamper · 28/05/2010 20:29

My friend has a Sophia, but she is also known as Sophie or Soph (sofe) so it probably doesn't make much difference.
I like Sophia personally.

CoteDAzur · 29/05/2010 10:31

Sophia will date as there are loads of them in the last five years or so. Sophie is better imho.

Lonnie · 29/05/2010 10:34

I prefeer Sophia

plonker · 29/05/2010 10:52

Sophie, IMO is much much nicer than Sophia.

I agree with others that Sophia will date very quickly. Plus I love the elegant simplicity of Sophie.

Sophie Eliza is beautiful

piscesmoon · 29/05/2010 11:00

Sophie is much nicer and I agree that Sophia will date.

liliputlady · 29/05/2010 11:06

Both lovely names, but probably have slight preference for Sophie (would suit a girly girl or a tom boy, however she turns out. Sophia is mega girly I think.)

Sophie Eliza is lovely.

mrsgportishead · 29/05/2010 14:26

I prefer Sophia,

zenoushka · 29/07/2010 19:48

Definitely Sophia - ADORE the name!

wigglesrock · 29/07/2010 20:32

I have a Sofia, middle name Mary, I really love it, infact I love it more every day

MummyLovesSadie · 29/07/2010 20:37

I'm sure little Sophie/Sophia was probably named about 6 weeks ago..... yet another 2 month old thread dredged up!

CDMforever · 29/07/2010 22:42

Both names are utterly gorgeous. Have just named DD's new cat toy Sophie as I love saying the word so much! It sounds so soft and lovely.

highlystrung · 30/07/2010 19:46

Sophie.
